जिसकी शोभा को देखकर इन्दिरा अर्थात् लक्ष्मी ने अपने ही शरीर की निन्दा की।
An udāharaṇa illustrating guṇotkīrti, the sakhī's 'proclaiming of the heroine's qualities,' introduced by the lead-in 'tatra tasyā guṇotkīrtiḥ, yathā—'. Spoken by Lalitā to Kṛṣṇa (so Viśvanātha).
यह गुणोत्कीर्ति (सखी द्वारा नायिका के गुणों का बखान) का एक उदाहरण है, जिसे 'तत्र तस्या गुणोत्कीर्तिः, यथा—' इस उपोद्घात से आरम्भ किया गया है। विश्वनाथ के अनुसार इसे ललिता श्रीकृष्ण से कहती है।

acalajā ca — and Acalajā (Durgā); vicārya — on considering; guṇa-cāturīm — her skill in good qualities; lajjāṁ gatā — became ashamed.
guṇa-cāturīm — गुणों की चतुराई पर; vicārya — विचार कर; acalajā ca — अचलजा (दुर्गा) भी; lajjāṁ gatā — लज्जा को प्राप्त हो गई।
And Durgā, once she considered Rādhā's skill in good qualities, was put to shame.
गुणों की चतुराई पर विचार कर अचलजा अर्थात् दुर्गा भी लज्जा को प्राप्त हो गई।
acala-jā, 'born of the unmoving one (the mountain),' = the mountain's daughter, Pārvatī/Durgā; Viśvanātha glosses it Durgā.
अचल-जा अर्थात् 'अचल (पर्वत) से उत्पन्न', इसलिए पर्वत की पुत्री — पार्वती अथवा दुर्गा; विश्वनाथ इसका अर्थ दुर्गा करते हैं।

paraṁbut, only (on the surface: 'yet') read again by śleṣa as parakīya-puruṣa-śreṣṭha, 'the best parakīya lover' — see noteपरन्तु (और श्लेष से 'पर' = श्रेष्ठ परकीय पुरुष — देखें टिप्पणी)
parama-durlabhāsupremely hard to attain (surface reading) resplit by śleṣa as param + a-durlabhā, 'exceedingly not-hard to attain'परम दुर्लभ (और श्लेष से param + a-durlabhā = अत्यन्त सुलभ)
milatumay she unite, could she meet imperative (loṭ) in the sense of possibilityमिले (सम्भावना के अर्थ में)

me sakhīmy friendमेरी सखी
sā me sakhī — she, my friend; paraṁ parama-durlabhā — but is supremely hard to attain; kasya milatu — with whom could she ever unite?
paraṁ — परन्तु; sā me sakhī — वह मेरी सखी; parama-durlabhā — परम दुर्लभ है; kasya milatu — किसको मिले?
But she, my friend, is supremely hard to attain — with whom could she ever unite?
परन्तु वह मेरी सखी तो परम दुर्लभ है — भला किसको मिले?
This line is a śleṣa (double reading). Surface: paraṁ ('but') parama-durlabhā ('supremely hard to attain'), kasya milatu ('with whom could she unite?'). Read the other way, param splits off as the accusative object — parakīya-puruṣa-śreṣṭha, 'the topmost parakīya (another-man's) lover,' i.e. Kṛṣṇa — and parama-durlabhā resplits as param a-durlabhā, 'for that best man, not hard to attain at all.' Viśvanātha draws both layers out (his s11, s14).

Jīva notes that at 'acalajā ca lajjāṁ gatā' there is also a variant reading: 'hriyam avāpa padmāly api' ('and padmālī too felt shame') — same metrical slot, different words. He then unpacks who 'padmālī' is.

padmāyāḥ lakṣmyāḥ ālī — Padmā's (Lakṣmī's) friend; tatra — in that word; prakāśa-bhedena — by a shift of sense; śreṇī api — also a 'row.'
padmāyāḥ lakṣmyāḥ ālī — पद्मा अर्थात् लक्ष्मी की सखी; tatra — वहाँ; prakāśa-bhedena — अर्थभेद से; śreṇī api — 'श्रेणी' (पंक्ति) भी।
On the first reading, 'padmā' is Lakṣmī and 'ālī' is her female friend; and by a shift of sense, 'ālī' can also mean 'śreṇī,' a row. So padmālī yields either Lakṣmī's companion or a whole row [of lotuses].
पद्मा अर्थात् लक्ष्मी की आली (सखी); वहाँ अर्थभेद से 'आली' का अर्थ 'श्रेणी' (पंक्ति) भी होता है।

Or else — Jīva leaves this second reading standing beside the first — 'Padmā' is a gopī of that name, and her friend (ālī) is Candrāvalī. So 'padmālī' means Candrāvalī: even she was put to shame.
अथवा — पद्मा नामक उस गोपी की आली (सखी) चन्द्रावली भी (हो सकती है)।
Candrāvalī is a leading gopī (Rādhā's rival); Padmā is her associate. On this reading padmālī = Candrāvalī. Kept suspended alongside the Lakṣmī reading of s2, not chosen over it.
चन्द्रावली एक प्रमुख गोपी है (राधा की प्रतिद्वन्द्विनी); पद्मा उसकी सहचरी है। इस पाठ में पद्माली = चन्द्रावली। यह अर्थ s2 के लक्ष्मी-पक्ष के साथ-साथ अनिर्णीत रखा गया है, उसके स्थान पर चुना नहीं गया।

bhāṣya-prayoga-ādeḥon the strength of such Bhāṣya usage and the like abl. of ground; ādi = 'and similar cases'भाष्य के प्रयोग आदि के कारण
kasya iti — the word 'kasya'; karmaṇi sambandha-vivakṣā — expresses the objective relation; māṣāṇām aśnīyāt iti bhāṣya-prayoga-ādeḥ — on the strength of the Bhāṣya usage 'one may eat of the beans,' and the like.
kasya iti karmaṇi sambandha-vivakṣā — 'कस्य' में कर्म में सम्बन्ध कहने की विवक्षा है; 'māṣāṇām aśnīyāt' iti bhāṣya-prayogādeḥ — क्योंकि 'माषाणाम् अश्नीयात्' आदि भाष्य-प्रयोग (इसके प्रमाण) हैं।
'kasya' is a genitive carrying an objective relation — the genitive doing the accusative's job — on the strength of Bhāṣya usages like 'māṣāṇām aśnīyāt,' 'one may eat of the beans.'
'कस्य' में कर्म के प्रति सम्बन्ध कहने की विवक्षा है, क्योंकि 'माषाणाम् अश्नीयात्' आदि भाष्य-प्रयोग इसके प्रमाण हैं।
Why cited: The Mahābhāṣya usage 'māṣāṇām aśnīyāt' — a genitive standing for the accusative object of a verb of eating — is adduced as grammatical precedent that 'kasya' (gen.) can carry the objective relation, justifying the genitive for the accusative object of 'milatu.'
क्यों उद्धृत: महाभाष्य का 'माषाणाम् अश्नीयात्' प्रयोग — जहाँ भोजन-अर्थक क्रिया के कर्म के स्थान पर षष्ठी है — इस व्याकरण-सिद्धि के प्रमाण के रूप में दिया गया है कि 'कस्य' (षष्ठी) कर्म का सम्बन्ध वहन कर सकता है, जिससे 'मिलतु' के कर्म के लिए षष्ठी उचित ठहरती है।
karmaṇi ṣaṣṭhī: a genitive standing where an accusative object would be expected. Homely case: 'he partakes of the food' (genitive) vs 'he eats the food' (accusative). Here 'kasya milatu' does the work of 'kaṁ milatu,' 'whom may she meet.'
कर्मणि षष्ठी — जहाँ कर्म-कारक (द्वितीया) की अपेक्षा हो वहाँ षष्ठी का प्रयोग। सरल उदाहरण — 'वह भोजन में से खाता है' (षष्ठी) बनाम 'वह भोजन को खाता है' (द्वितीया)। यहाँ 'कस्य मिलतु' 'कं मिलतु' अर्थात् 'किसे मिले' का काम करता है।

kasya iti — the word 'kasya'; karmaṇi sambandha-vivakṣayā — because the objective relation is intended; ṣaṣṭhī — is a genitive.
kasya iti — 'कस्य' में; karmaṇi sambandha-vivakṣayā — कर्म में सम्बन्ध कहने की विवक्षा के कारण; ṣaṣṭhī — षष्ठी हुई।
'kasya' stands in the genitive because it is meant to express the objective relation — the genitive doing the accusative's job.
'कस्य' में कर्म के प्रति सम्बन्ध कहने की विवक्षा के कारण षष्ठी विभक्ति हुई है।
karmaṇi ṣaṣṭhī: a genitive used where an accusative object is expected. Compare 'he partakes of the food' (genitive) with 'he eats the food' (accusative). Here 'kasya milatu' does duty for 'kaṁ milatu,' 'whom may she meet.'
कर्मणि षष्ठी — जहाँ कर्म-कारक (द्वितीया) की अपेक्षा हो वहाँ षष्ठी का प्रयोग। तुलना कीजिए — 'वह भोजन में से खाता है' (षष्ठी) बनाम 'वह भोजन को खाता है' (द्वितीया)। यहाँ 'कस्य मिलतु' 'कं मिलतु' अर्थात् 'किसे मिले' का काम करता है।

The straightforward phrasing would be 'kaṁ (whom) shall my friend meet?' Leaving that unsaid and using the genitive 'kasya' instead is deliberate — it is meant to inject a second meaning. This is what opens the śleṣa.

tarhi mayā kathaṁ sā labhyā syāt iti apekṣāyām[Kṛṣṇa:] 'then how could she be won by me?' — meeting this expectation mayā instr., 'won by me''तो फिर मुझसे वह कैसे प्राप्त होगी' — इस अपेक्षा के उठने पर

param parakīyaṁ puruṣaṁ śreṣṭham itireading 'param' as the accusative 'the topmost parakīya (another-man's) lover' — i.e. you śleṣa: param is now the object of 'milatu,' not the indeclinable 'but''परम्' अर्थात् श्रेष्ठ परकीय पुरुष को, ऐसा
tarhi mayā kathaṁ sā labhyā syāt iti apekṣāyām — 'then how might she be won by me?' anticipated; āha — she says; param parakīyaṁ puruṣaṁ śreṣṭham iti — 'param' = the topmost parakīya lover.
tarhi mayā kathaṁ sā labhyā syāt ity apekṣāyām — 'तो फिर मुझसे वह कैसे प्राप्त होगी' इस अपेक्षा में; āha — कहती है; 'param parakīyaṁ puruṣaṁ śreṣṭham' iti — 'परम्' अर्थात् श्रेष्ठ परकीय पुरुष को।
Kṛṣṇa wonders, 'Then how could I ever win her?' Anticipating this, she now reads 'param' the other way — as the accusative object of 'milatu': param = the topmost parakīya lover, that is, you. So 'may my friend unite with param — the best of parakīya lovers.'
'तो फिर मुझसे वह कैसे प्राप्त होगी?' — इस अपेक्षा के उठने पर कहती है — 'परम्' अर्थात् श्रेष्ठ परकीय पुरुष को।
This is the turn to the śleṣa's second layer: 'param' is no longer the indeclinable 'but/only' but the accusative object of 'milatu,' meaning Kṛṣṇa as the supreme parakīya (belonging-to-another) lover.
यह श्लेष के दूसरे स्तर की ओर मोड़ है — 'param' अब अव्यय 'परन्तु / केवल' नहीं, अपितु 'मिलतु' का कर्म-कारक है, जिसका अर्थ है श्रेष्ठ परकीय (दूसरे के अधीन) पुरुष यानी कृष्ण।

ata eva śleṣeṇa param atiśayenādurlabhā |
ata evafor this very reasonइसीलिए
śleṣeṇaby śleṣa — a double reading instr.; the phrase carries two senses at onceश्लेष से (यह पद एक साथ दो अर्थ वहन करता है)
param atiśayena'param' [here] = exceedingly'परम्' अर्थात् अत्यन्त
adurlabhānot hard to attain — 'parama-durlabhā' resplit as param + a-durlabhāअदुर्लभ (सुलभ)
ata eva — for this very reason; śleṣeṇa — by śleṣa; param atiśayena — 'param' = exceedingly; adurlabhā — not hard to attain.
ata eva śleṣeṇa — इसीलिए श्लेष से; param atiśayena adurlabhā — 'param a-durlabhā' अर्थात् अत्यन्त अदुर्लभ (सुलभ)।
For just this reason, by śleṣa the words split the other way: 'param' = exceedingly, and 'a-durlabhā' = NOT hard to attain. So the very phrase that read 'parama-durlabhā, supremely hard to get' equally reads 'param adurlabhā, exceedingly not-hard to get.'
इसीलिए श्लेष से 'परम अदुर्लभा' अर्थात् वह अत्यन्त अदुर्लभ (सुलभ) है।
The headline śleṣa: one string, two readings. Surface — parama-durlabhā, 'supremely hard to attain.' Hidden — param a-durlabhā, 'exceedingly not-hard to attain.' The two are held together, not resolved into one.
यही मुख्य श्लेष है — एक ही शब्द-समूह, दो पाठ। ऊपरी — parama-durlabhā, 'अत्यन्त दुर्लभ।' छिपा हुआ — param a-durlabhā, 'अत्यन्त अदुर्लभ (सुलभ)।' दोनों साथ-साथ रखे गए हैं, किसी एक में निर्णीत नहीं किए गए।
