prākhyaryaṁ mārdavaṁ cāpi yadyapy āpekṣikaṁ bhavet |
prākhyaryaṁsharpness (prākharya) — a sakhī's bold, sharp-edged temperamentप्रखरता (तीक्ष्ण स्वभाव)
mārdavaṁ caand softness (mārdava) — the gentle temperamentऔर मृदुता (कोमलता)

āpekṣikaṁare relative — a matter of comparison, not fixed in themselvesआपेक्षिक (दूसरे की अपेक्षा से, सापेक्ष)
yadi api — although; prākhyaryaṁ mārdavaṁ ca api — sharpness and softness too; āpekṣikaṁ bhavet — may be relative.
Sharpness (prākharya) and softness (mārdava) are traits of the sakhīs. Grant that they are relative — a girl counts as 'sharp' only beside a softer one, and 'soft' only beside a sharper one. Even so — (the thought finishes in the next line).

tathā api — even so; vistara-bhayāt — for fear of going on too long; tad viśeṣaḥ — their fine distinctions; atra — here; na īritaḥ — are not stated.
Still, to keep from stretching this out, Rūpa does not lay out the fine gradations of sharp-versus-soft here.

This temperament — sharpness and the other traits — has now been assigned to each sakhī as suits her.

And when circumstances are special — a particular place, a particular time, and so on — even this settled nature can flip: the sharp sakhī may turn gentle, the gentle one sharp.

The udāharaṇa (illustrative verse, verse 93, a śārdūlavikrīḍita) attached to the treatment of the sakhīs' prākharyādi-svabhāva ('nature of sharpness and the rest') in 8.91-92. It is spoken in Lalitā's own voice: per Jīva ('lalitāyā eva vākyam') and Viśvanātha ('Lalitā speaks to the sulking Śrī Rādhā'), she is coaxing the māninī Rādhā to drop her anger and receive Kṛṣṇa, who has braved the storm to reach her door.
