Jīva unpacks 'ekāntaram': 'eka' stands for 'one of the two friends,' and the compound means the arrangement in which one round of messenger-duty is the gap between turns — so that the two alternate. On his reading the interval is a turn of service, not a day.
Jīva analyzes ekāntaram as eka + antara ('a dūtī-turn as the gap'); Viśvanātha (s5) instead reads it as eka-dina-antaram, 'one day's gap.' Two independent parsings — left standing side by side.

eka-dināntarammeans 'with one day's interval' — i.e., every other day supplies the elided dina: eka-dina-antaramएक दिन का अन्तर
ekāntaram — ekāntaram; eka-dināntaram — means 'with a one-day gap'
Viśvanātha reads 'ekāntaram' as 'eka-dināntaram' — with one day intervening, that is, on alternate days.
This differs from Jīva (s1), who takes the interval to be one round of messenger-service, not a day. Both readings stand.

He backs the reading up. Just as 'ekāntara-upavāsa' (fasting on alternate days) conveys 'day' without stating it, so here 'ekāntaram' is understood as 'one day's interval' even though the word 'day' is not spelled out.
