An udāharaṇa (illustrative verse) in the sakhī prakaraṇa, spoken by Śrī Rādhā 'under the pretext of showing a wonder' (lead-in: āścarya-darśana-vyapadeśena), teasing a sakhī who had run a love-errand. It is built as a śleṣa riddle: read one way it describes a marvellous swan; read the other way (pakṣe) every feature names Kṛṣṇa. Viśvanātha ties the closing 'iva' to the two sakhī-types of UN 8.84 — one slightly eager to be Kṛṣṇa's own beloved, one content with friendship.

Śyāmalā and the other gopī-messengers have come and settled down close beside Rādhā. In front of them Rādhā lets it be known that this sakhī of hers had once run a love-errand [to Kṛṣṇa]. And so, teasing the sakhī, she speaks the verse 'sakhi...'.

pakṣe — in the second reading; atiśayoktyā kulāṅganā-darśana-sādharmyāt — by hyperbole, because of the sameness in how a noble gopī sees it; muralīm — [vyālī =] the flute.
Read the Kṛṣṇa way, 'vyālī' (snake) is the muralī, Kṛṣṇa's flute. The figure is atiśayokti (hyperbole): to the noble gopīs the flute at Kṛṣṇa's lips is as unbearable a thing to lay eyes on as a snake, so it is spoken of straight out as a 'she-snake.'

'dyumaṇi-paṭala' = a mass of suns. Read the Kṛṣṇa way, it is the Kaustubha gem blazing at his throat.

This is the hinge of the riddle. 'sakala-ratnāni vamati' read straight = '[the swan] vomits every jewel — cintāmaṇi and all.' Re-split as 'sa kala-ratnāni vakti': 'sa' is Kṛṣṇa; 'kala-ratnāni' are his jewel-notes, the sweet, half-formed, lovely flute-sounds; and 'vamati' ('spews') is heard as 'vakti' — he pours them out. So one and the same line says both 'a swan spewing jewels' and 'Kṛṣṇa pouring out flute-music.'

Why cited: Completes the two-fold division of sakhīs — one slightly keen to be Kṛṣṇa's beloved, one content with pure friendship — grounding the reading that this teased sakhī is of the first, slightly-eager sort.

Kṛṣṇa's own words (still in Rādhā's mouth): 'Rādhā alone has maddened me, flinging lotus-pollen over me; and if I am ever to be revived, she alone can do it — only then do I live.' Then Rādhā flips the teasing round on the sakhī: 'So now it is I who am cross with you! After doing all that, how can you dawdle here? Run to him at once and bring him back to life!' That, Viśvanātha says, is how to take Rādhā's rejoinder — she turns the sakhī's own mock-anger back on her.
