O friend, my dear pearl-necklace (named in the verse's opening) lies forgotten in the recess of the little cottage in the kadamba grove.
An udāharaṇa (illustrative verse) of nija-prayojana-vyapadeśena — the confidante contriving the meeting under the pretext of her own errand (here, a pearl-necklace she claims to have left in the grove) — the device named in the lead-in to 8.68. Spoken by Lalitā, teasing her friend Śaśikalā (both names from Viśvanātha, s1). The one who gave the order, 'Vṛṣabhānu's daughter' (vṛṣabhānujā, L2), is Rādhā. The full opening line runs kadamba- into this atom's bāṭī-kuṭīra-kuhare, with the subject muktāvalī ('the pearl-necklace') and niśi mayā dayitā ('my dear one, by me, at night') standing in the lead-in.

So why, Śaśikalā, have you left it behind and come back home empty-handed? (The needling: you were sent to fetch it, yet here you are with nothing.)
The name Śaśikalā literally means 'a digit of the moon, the crescent moon'. Here it is only her name — no moon-reading is drawn out of this verse; the celestial śleṣa runs in the very next verse, 8.69.

Jīva plants a reading here that belongs to the next verse, 8.69. There the word 'sakala-ratnāni' ('all the jewels') is to be split 'sa kala-ratnāni' — 'he [Kṛṣṇa] pours out jewel-like sweet sounds'. Because Jīva leaves 8.69 itself without comment, he flags its key split in advance.
This is the śleṣa (double-reading) of 8.69, where Viśvanātha spells it out: on the surface sakala-ratnāni = 'all gems' (cintāmaṇi and the rest); split as sa kala-ratnāni it reads 'he — the sweet indistinct jewel-sounds — pours forth', i.e. Kṛṣṇa's flute-notes. Citing a coming verse of the same work is legitimate provenance.

Jīva supplies Śaśikalā's comeback. 'You quiz me just as pointedly as Rādhā ordered me about — my respects to the pair of you!' That, he says, is her reply. The dual 'you two' (yuvābhyām) shows she catches Lalitā and Rādhā teasing her in concert.
