kṣauṇībhṛtaḥof the mountain (the 'earth-bearer') kṣauṇī-bhṛt = mountain; genitive with kandareपर्वत की — (क्षौणीभृत् = पृथ्वी को धारण करने वाला, अर्थात् पर्वत; कन्दरा से सम्बद्ध)
kandarein the cave locativeगुफा में
śyāme — O Śyāmā; gauri — O Gaurī; sakhi — O friend; hariḥ kva dīvyati — where does Hari play?; kṣauṇībhṛtaḥ kandare — in the cave of the mountain.
The two friends greet each other: 'Śyāmā!' 'Gaurī!' Then one asks, 'Where is Hari playing, friend?' The other answers, 'In the mountain's cave.' But 'Hari' means both Kṛṣṇa and 'lion,' and that double sense sets off the whole teasing match.
The lead-in 'atha sama-madhyā' marks this verse as an udāharaṇa illustrating the sama-madhyā, the evenly-matched friend-type (both girls trade barb for barb as equals). The whole verse runs on śleṣa: every key word — hari, pañcāsya, nāga-mathana, kaṇṭhīrava — carries a lion-sense and a Kṛṣṇa/flute-sense at once.

Śyāmā teases on: 'Did the five-faced one's claws test their strength on the pot of your breast?' Pañcāsya, 'five-faced,' is a lion; and the breast-pot (vakṣoja-kumbha) puns against the domed forehead (kumbha) of an elephant, which is just what a lion claws. Under it hides the other reading — pañca-nakhāḥ, Kṛṣṇa's own five fingernails on the breast.

Gaurī answers in kind: 'That elephant-churner, with a roar, drags you off from every side — you, no one else.' Nāga-mathana is the lion that mauls elephants; the second reading is Kṛṣṇa, churner of the serpent Kāliya. Rava is the lion's roar — or the note of the flute.

The tease bounces back: 'It's all an act, you dancing actress — it's you who delights in that sweet-voiced one.' The śleṣa is on kaṇṭhīrava: as su-kaṇṭhī-rave it is 'the sweet-throated singer/flute-player'; read as kaṇṭhīrava it is 'the lion.'

tasyāḥ cikitsāṁ — its treatment; yataḥ tataḥ spṛṣṭvā — touching it by some means; kariṣyāmi iti bhāvaḥ — 'I'll do' is the inner intent.
The real point behind the show of concern, Viśvanātha adds: 'so that, on any excuse, I can touch the spot and "treat" the wound.'

Viśvanātha now unfolds the second layer (pakṣe): 'his' is Kṛṣṇa's, and 'five nails' are the five fingers of one hand. The singular 'one pot' plus five nails tells you the scene: with his right hand Kṛṣṇa grasped her left breast, and with his left hand drew the veil back from her head — the amorous meaning folded under the lion-talk. This is the śleṣa's second face, given but not collapsed into the first.

'nāga-mathana' here is the elephant-taming lion. The barb: the lion drags off YOU, the she-elephant — not me, a slender doe. Gaurī casts Śyāmā as the elephant-cow the lion craves, and herself as the untouched deer.
