gāḍha-viśrambha-nirbheda-prema-bandhaṁ samā-trikam
gāḍha-viśrambha-nirbheda-prema-bandhaṁ[the group] tied by a love whose trust runs deep and whose closeness leaves no gap — a bond of gāḍha-viśrambha (deep, unguarded confidence) and nirbheda (nothing kept back, no felt separation) one long bahuvrīhi describing samā-trikam: 'having-a-love-bond-of-…'; nirbheda works on two edges — following viśrambha it is 'no secret withheld', and of prema it is 'no difference of heart'जिसमें प्रगाढ़ विश्रम्भ (घनिष्ठता) और नितान्त निर्भेद वाले प्रेम का बन्धन है — यह एक ही बहुव्रीहि समा-त्रिक का विशेषण है; 'निर्भेद' दो ओर काम करता है — विश्रम्भ के साथ 'कोई रहस्य न छिपा', प्रेम के साथ 'हृदयों में कोई भेद नहीं'
samā-trikamis the samā triad — the set of three friends who stand equal [in fortune and standing] to the heroine trika = a group of three; samā = 'equal', naming the middle rank (neither above nor below the nāyikā); the three members are named in the verses that followसमान (मध्यम) श्रेणी की तीन का समूह — 'त्रिक' अर्थात् तीन का समुदाय, 'समा' अर्थात् जो नायिका से न ऊँची न नीची, ठीक बराबर की; इसके तीन भेद आगे के श्लोकों में गिनाए जाते हैं
samā-trikam — the samā triad, the three equal-standing friends; gāḍha-viśrambha-nirbheda-prema-bandhaṁ — [is the group] whose love-bond is one of deep, unreserved trust and complete non-separation.
gāḍha-viśrambha-nirbheda-prema-bandhaṁ — प्रगाढ़ विश्रम्भ तथा अभेद प्रेम के बन्धन वाला; samā-trikam — समान (मध्यम) श्रेणी की तीन सखियों का समूह।
Now the samā group — the three friends who rank as the heroine's equals. What marks them is the kind of love-bond they share: a trust so deep that nothing is guarded, and a closeness so entire that no distance of heart is left between them and her.
जिन सखियों में गहरे विश्रम्भ और पूर्ण निर्भेद वाले प्रेम का बन्धन होता है, वह 'समा' श्रेणी है। यह मध्यम कोटि है — नायिका से न ऊँची, न नीची, ठीक बराबर की। इस समूह में तीन सखियाँ हैं, जिनके नाम आगे के श्लोकों में बताए जाएँगे।
nirbheda pulls in two directions at once, and both fit. Read against viśrambha it means 'no secret held back' — the intimacy that hides nothing; read against prema it means 'no difference' — hearts that feel as one. The samā friend is defined by both together.
'निर्भेद' एक साथ दो दिशाओं में खिंचता है, और दोनों अर्थ यहाँ बैठते हैं। विश्रम्भ के साथ पढ़ें तो इसका अर्थ है 'कोई रहस्य न छिपाना' — वह घनिष्ठता जो कुछ भी नहीं छिपाती; प्रेम के साथ पढ़ें तो अर्थ है 'कोई भेद नहीं' — वे हृदय जो एक-से अनुभव करते हैं। समा सखी इन दोनों अर्थों के मेल से ही परिभाषित होती है।
