madhuritā madhunā vidhunāpy asau
madhuritāis made sweet, sweetened (of the grove — the predicate the whole verse hangs on)मधुर बनाई गई (यह स्त्रीलिंगी विशेष्य — वन, तथा श्लेष से शरीर)
madhunāby madhu — the spring season; sweetened by spring śleṣa: Viśvanātha glosses madhu = vasanta (spring), not literally 'honey' — though the honeyed sense colours the word.'
vidhunāand by vidhu — the moon; sweetened by moonlight too'विधु' अर्थात् चन्द्रमा के द्वारा
apieven, as well — piling a second sweetener onto the firstभी
asauthis [grove] yonder — pointed out to the friendयह (सामने वाली)
asau — this grove yonder; madhunā — by madhu, the spring; vidhunā api — and even by the moon; madhuritā — is made sweet.
This grove yonder is made sweet even by the spring, and by the moon as well.
An udāharaṇa closing the Dūtī-bheda prakaraṇa (7.96): a go-between (dūtī) engaged for the task — here Rādhā sets her friend Viśākhā the errand by praising the grove. Viśvanātha reads it as bringing out, in its distinctive form, the very manner of employing a messenger (niyojana-prakāra). The verse runs on a double portrait: everything said of the grove is, by śleṣa, said of Rādhā's own body (tanuḥ, L4) — both are feminine, so every predicate lands on both at once.

pataṅga-sutā, 'daughter of the sun,' is the standard name for the river Yamunā (Sūrya's daughter); pulina-aṭavī, the grove fringing her sandbanks.

and adorned with a companion of its own age and with fresh youth.
On the body-reading (Viśvanātha, s3): the 'same-aged friend' is the girlfriend who decks Rādhā with tilaka and ornaments, and 'youth' is her own blooming age with its charms — these two are to her body what spring and moon are to the grove.

And this body of mine, too. So here — what is the fitting thing? Tell me.
Here the śleṣa surfaces: 'tanur iyam,' this body, makes explicit that the grove-portrait was all along a portrait of Rādhā's own person. The open question 'what is fitting?' carries a covert errand — the friends read it as 'go and bring Kṛṣṇa' (so Viśvanātha, s4–s5: 'what other thing is wanted').

Viśvanātha spells out the śleṣa. 'Madhu' is spring, 'vidhu' the moon; just as those two sweeten the grove, so a matching pair sweetens Rādhā's body — the girlfriend, who decks her with tilaka and ornaments, and her own youth, with its charms of hāva and bhāva. Spring and moon are to the grove what the friend and youth are to the body. And the two work differently: the friend beautifies from outside (a taṭastha, extrinsic mark), youth from within (a svarūpa, intrinsic mark) — both means to the same beauty.
taṭastha-lakṣaṇa vs svarūpa-lakṣaṇa: an extrinsic mark points a thing out without being part of it — 'the house on which the crow is sitting' locates the house though the crow is no part of it — whereas an intrinsic mark belongs to the thing's own nature, as blueness does in a 'blue lotus.' Here the girlfriend's ornaments beautify Rādhā from outside (taṭastha), while her youth beautifies her from within her own person (svarūpa).

'anyad apekṣitaṁ vastu' quietly names the errand the open question is fishing for; s5 makes it plain that the 'thing wanted' is Kṛṣṇa himself.
