ṇa — नहीं; pa{u}marāa-ppamuhaṁ — पद्मराग को प्रमुख रखने वाले; raaṇaṁ — रत्न को; kāmei — चाहता है; goi — हे गोपी; me — मेरा; hiaaṁ — हृदय
O gopī, my heart has no wish for a jewel that carries a ruby (padmarāga) at its front.
हे गोपी, मेरा हृदय पद्मराग (माणिक्य) आदि को मुख्य रखने वाले रत्न को नहीं चाहता।
An udāharaṇa of the prauḍhā (bold, practiced) dūtī. Viśvanātha (s1) says Rūpa gives this right after the naive (mugdhā) messenger, to show how a skilled go-between carries her mistress's real message hidden inside innocent-sounding, double-meaning (śleṣa) talk about jewelry.
यह प्रौढा (चतुर, अनुभवी) दूती का उदाहरण है। विश्वनाथ (s1) कहते हैं कि रूप गोस्वामी इसे मुग्धा (भोली) दूती के तुरन्त बाद देते हैं, जिससे यह दिखे कि निपुण दूती अपनी स्वामिनी का असली सन्देश आभूषणों की भोली-सी, द्वयर्थक (श्लेषयुक्त) बातों में छिपाकर कैसे पहुँचाती है।

But my heart always longs to set the finest diamond (hīra-vara) in the middle of the necklace. That is the surface. The very same syllables, re-divided as 'sadā ābhīra-varaṁ,' say 'always the best of the cowherds' — Kṛṣṇa — so underneath the jewelry-talk the heart is longing forever to keep Kṛṣṇa within it. The commentators draw out this second reading below.
परन्तु वह सदा श्रेष्ठ हीरे को हार के भीतर रखना चाहता है।

iti vācyam |
itiso far — closing off the reading just givenऐसा
vācyamis the expressed, spoken-out meaning (vācya)वाच्य (शब्दों का सीधा) अर्थ है
iti — so far; vācyam — [is] the directly stated meaning.
iti — ऐसा; vācyam — वाच्य अर्थ है
'That,' Jīva says, 'is the vācya' — the plain, literal sense of the verse: talk of a ruby, a diamond, and a necklace.
यह वाच्य, अर्थात् शब्दों का सीधा अर्थ है।
vācya vs. vyaṅgya (a technical pair). The vācya is what the words literally state — here, gems and a necklace. The vyaṅgya (next line) is what they suggest underneath — Kṛṣṇa held in the heart. Compare 'the sun has set': vācya = the day is over; vyaṅgya = 'so let us start for home.' Jīva reads the verse on both layers, naming each.

itithus [runs the hidden reading]ऐसा
tuwhereas — marking the turn from the vācya just given to this second layerतो, यह पक्ष
vyaṅgyamis the suggested meaning (vyaṅgya)व्यंग्य (ध्वनित) अर्थ है
sadā ābhīra-varaṁ śrī-gopālam — 'always the best cowherd, Śrī Gopāla'; iti tu — this, however; vyaṅgyam — is the suggested meaning.
sadā — सदा; ābhīra-varaṁ — आभीर-वर (ग्वालों में श्रेष्ठ) को; śrī-gopālam — अर्थात् श्रीगोपाल को; iti — ऐसा; tu — तो; vyaṅgyam — व्यंग्य अर्थ है
Now the second layer. Re-divide the same syllables — 'sadā hīra-varaṁ' as 'sadā ābhīra-varaṁ' — and the line says 'always the best of the cowherds,' whom Jīva names as Śrī Gopāla, Kṛṣṇa. That, he says, is the vyaṅgya: beneath the jewelry-talk the heart is forever longing to keep Kṛṣṇa within it. The 'tu' marks the turn from the surface sense to this hidden one. This double sense (śleṣa) is the whole art of the prauḍhā messenger — she carries her mistress's real message wrapped in innocent talk of gems.

Viśvanātha sets the scene. Having just illustrated how the mugdhā — the young, artless go-between — is sent on her errand, Rūpa now turns to the prauḍhā, the bold and practiced one, and so opens with 'yathā vā' ('or again, as when…').
मुग्धा दूती के नियोजन का उदाहरण देकर, प्रौढा दूती के (नियोजन) को कहने के लिए 'यथा वा' कहते हैं।
mugdhā vs. prauḍhā: two grades of go-between (and of heroine). The mugdhā is young and unpracticed and carries a message plainly; the prauḍhā is mature and adept, able to fold the whole message into double-meaning speech — which is exactly what this verse then shows.
मुग्धा और प्रौढा: दूती (और नायिका) की दो श्रेणियाँ। मुग्धा युवा और अनुभवहीन होती है और सन्देश सीधे कह देती है; प्रौढा परिपक्व और निपुण होती है, पूरे सन्देश को द्वयर्थक (श्लेषयुक्त) वचनों में समेट सकती है — और यही यह श्लोक आगे दिखाता है।

Viśvanātha spells out the pun on one word. Taken straight, 'hīra-vara' is the finest diamond (hīraka-śreṣṭha). On the other reading (pakṣe), the same sounds give 'ābhīra-vara,' the best of the cowherds — and that, he says, is Śrī Kṛṣṇa. So the necklace-talk carries, underneath, the longing to keep Kṛṣṇa always close.
'हीर-वर' का वाच्य अर्थ है श्रेष्ठ हीरा; दूसरे पक्ष (श्लेष) में 'आभीर-वर' अर्थात् श्रीकृष्ण।
