L1definition
atra śabdārtha-mūlatvād vyaṅgyaṁ ca dvividhaṁ bhavet ||
atrahere — in the case of the suggestive go-between locative of the topic just introduced (atha vyaṅgyam)यहाँ (अभी जिस व्यंग्य का प्रसंग चला, उसमें)
śabdārtha-mūlatvādbecause its suggestion can rest either on the word itself or on the meaning ablative of cause; śabda-artha-mūla-tva, 'having word-and-meaning as its root'इसलिए कि उसका मूल कभी शब्द तो कभी अर्थ होता है
vyaṅgyaṁthe suggestive [go-between] — the one who carries the message by hint subject; vyaṅgya, 'what is conveyed by suggestion'व्यंग्य (जो संकेत से जताया जाए)
catoo — just as the explicit kind was itself dividedऔर
dvividhaṁturns out to be of two kindsदो प्रकार का
bhavetcomes to be optative stating the classificatory ruleहोता है (यह वर्गीकरण का नियम बताती हुई विधि)
atra — here; śabdārtha-mūlatvāt — because it rests on word and on meaning; vyaṅgyaṁ ca — the suggestive go-between too; dvividhaṁ bhavet — comes to be twofold.
Now for the suggestive go-between. Because the suggestion may hang on the word itself or on the meaning it carries, this type too falls into two — a word-rooted kind and a meaning-rooted kind. So, like the explicit go-between before it, the suggestive one is twofold.
śabda-mūla vs artha-mūla is a distinction from poetics (alaṅkāra-śāstra). A word-rooted suggestion depends on the exact word and dies the moment you swap in a synonym — a pun (śleṣa) works this way. A meaning-rooted suggestion is carried by the sense and survives such a swap. Both count as vyaṅjanā, 'suggestion'.

na hi kāmaye — I have no wish; śikṣituṁ — to learn; kauśalaṁ — skill; vara-kalāsu — in the fine arts.
It is not, dear friend, that I am longing to gain skill in the fine arts —
An udāharaṇa (illustrative verse) for the vyaṅgya, 'suggestive', go-between just defined in L1: a maiden's real wish is delivered by hint, not stated outright. The verse is spoken by a young woman to her friend, who is to carry the message. The definition it serves is 7.88 above.

guṇa-cāturīṁ ca — and cleverness in the accomplishments; na kāmaye — I do not desire; mṛgākṣi — O doe-eyed one.
— nor, O doe-eyed friend, do I hanker after a clever command of the graces.
kāmaye reaches back to cover L2 as well: she desires neither skill in the fine arts nor cleverness in the accomplishments.

subhruvāṁthe fair-browed women's — the thing done by women of lovely brow genitive plural, going with keśa-bandhana in L5सुन्दर भौंहोंवाली स्त्रियों की (जिनकी केश-रचना)
tam eva — that one thing alone; ahaṁ — I; samabhyasitum — to master by long practice; subhruvāṁ — belonging to the fair-browed women.
That one thing alone I want to drill to perfection — the very thing the fair-browed women do:
eva does the rhetorical work of the verse: two wishes disclaimed, one asserted. tam is deliberately held back, its referent revealed only in the last line.

O friend, that one special way the fair-browed women bind their hair — teach me that; it is all I ask.
This compound is where the suggestion lives. The verse stands under the vyaṅgya (suggestive) go-between of L1, so the girl's plain request to learn a hairstyle carries an unspoken second sense — her real longing, delivered by hint rather than stated. keśa-bandhana- is the pivot word on which that śleṣa turns. But Jīva and Viśvanātha leave the verse unexplained (see the next atom), so no included commentator settles the exact second reading, and it is left open here.

Because the included commentators are silent here, the verse's suggested second sense is not glossed by any citable authority in this edition, and our decode of L2–L5 stays with the plain surface.
