śailaḥ — a mountain; tuṅga-śirā — high-crested; virājati — stands resplendent; tasya uttare — to its north; vistṛtaṁ saraḥ — a broad lake [lies].
A mountain rears its lofty peak and stands resplendent. To its north spreads a broad lake.
This whole verse is an udāharaṇa of vyapadeśena vyaṅgyam — 'the suggested message conveyed under a pretext of address' — the mode named in the lead-in (vyapadeśena vyaṅgyaṁ, yathā). A sakhī, seeming to address a bee (madhusūdana), is really signalling Kṛṣṇa (also madhusūdana, the slayer of Madhu) that a blossoming mālatī awaits him. Every word runs on two levels (śleṣa): here the geography is plain, but Viśvanātha reads the mountain as Govardhana and the lake as Rādhā-kuṇḍa.

A mālatī in full bloom, O Madhusūdana, watches your path today. On the surface the sakhī is telling a bee that a jasmine has opened; underneath, she is telling Kṛṣṇa that his beloved waits.
The two pun-words carry the whole doubled message. madhusūdana = the bee (the honey-drinker) and Kṛṣṇa (slayer of the demon Madhu); mālatī = the jasmine creeper and — in the suggested reading — a woman of that name. The commentators unpack each below.

Jīva keeps her deliberately generic — 'a certain woman named Mālatī' (kācit) — and does not name Rādhā. Viśvanātha, glossing the same word below, does name Śrī Rādhā. The two readings stand side by side; neither is folded into the other.
