dhavam upekṣya kaṭhoram iyaṁ puraḥ
dhavamthe dhava — on the surface a dhava tree, underneath her husband (dhava = pati) accusative; object of upekṣya, the thing passed overधव को (धव नामक वृक्ष को / पति को) — जिसकी वह उपेक्षा करती है
upekṣyahaving passed it over, disregarded it gerund; the act that turns her awayउपेक्षा करके, छोड़कर
kaṭhoramhard, harsh though it is agrees with dhavam — the tree's hardness / the husband's harshnessकठोर को (वृक्ष की कठोरता / पति की निष्ठुरता)
iyaṁthis one — the vine, or the woman feminine nominative; the subject who turns awayयह (जो स्त्री / लता मुख फेर लेती है)
puraḥstanding right in front of herसामने, आगे
iyaṁ — this one (the vine / the woman); puraḥ — [though it stands] right before her; kaṭhoram dhavam — the harsh dhava (tree / husband); upekṣya — having passed it over…
This one — read her as a mādhavī vine or as a woman — passes right by the dhava standing before her, hard and harsh though it is. On the surface a creeper ignores a rough dhava tree; underneath, a woman turns from her harsh husband. The whole verse runs on this double meaning (śleṣa).
An udāharaṇa of the dūtī delivering her message by pretext (vyapadeśena, the lead-in): the go-between speaks aloud to the kadamba tree about a mādhavī vine, but by śleṣa she is really telling Kṛṣṇa that her friend, spurning her harsh husband, comes to him full of longing. Viśvanātha names the speaker as Viśākhā.

She is the mādhavī, glowing with fragrance — the spring vāsantī vine in full scent, or the woman named Mādhavī radiant with perfume. The 'kila,' 'so they say,' keeps it as reported speech, fitting the go-between's indirect manner.

…in order to cling to the wondrous one. On the vine-side she is heavy with buds; on the woman-side she is filled with longing — 'utkalikā' means both 'bud' and 'yearning.' 'adbhutaṁ,' the wondrous, points ahead to 'you' in the next line.

Surely she comes to you, O hali-priya. Surface: O kadamba tree. Underneath: O beloved of Balarāma — that is, Kṛṣṇa. This is the pretext laid bare: she addresses a tree, but she is telling Kṛṣṇa that her friend, leaving her harsh husband, comes to him aching with longing.

Jīva reads the compound vaśīkṛta-sva-antā, 'one whose heart (svānta) is subdued.' Viśvanātha (s2) instead reads vaśīkṛta-sva-kāntā, 'one who has subdued her own beloved' — the same pun split oppositely (the captured heart vs. the captor of the lover). Left unreconciled.

tayā — by that (bud / longing); valitā — 'valitā'; yuktā — [means] endowed with.
