L1definition
tat-priyāyāḥ puraḥ paścāt kṛṣṇe vyaṅgyaṁ dvidhā bhavet |
tat-priyāyāḥof his beloved (Rādhā) — the reference point for 'in front of' and 'behind' genitive governed by puraḥ / paścātउस [कृष्ण की] प्रिया के — सामने या पीछे, इसका संबंध
puraḥin front of her, that is, in her presenceसामने
paścātbehind her, that is, in her absenceपीछे (अनुपस्थिति में)
kṛṣṇedirected at Kṛṣṇa, aimed toward him locative of the target of the hintकृष्ण को लक्ष्य करके (संकेत जिसकी ओर हो)
vyaṅgyaṁthe hinted conveyance — a message put across by suggestion, not spoken outव्यंग्य — जो कहा नहीं, संकेत से सूचित किया जाए
dvidhāin two ways, twofoldदो प्रकार का
bhavetturns out to beहोता है
kṛṣṇe vyaṅgyaṁ — the suggestion aimed at Kṛṣṇa; tat-priyāyāḥ puraḥ paścāt — in front of his beloved or behind her; dvidhā bhavet — turns out to be twofold.
Now the vyaṅgya kind of go-between — the one who gets a message to Kṛṣṇa by hinting, not by speaking it out. This hinting toward Kṛṣṇa comes in two settings. It can be done in front of his beloved (with Rādhā present), or behind her back (when she is away). So to begin with, the suggested message to Kṛṣṇa is twofold.
vyaṅgya is a poetics term: the sense that is suggested rather than stated. The section opens 'atha vyaṅgyam' — 'now, the suggestive messenger.'

tat — that twofold suggestion; sākṣād-vyapadeśābhyāṁ — by directness and by pretext; dvividhaṁ ca dvidhā uditam — is further declared to be twofold.
Each of those two settings is then split again — this time by how the hint is delivered. Either sākṣāt, said straight out, or by vyapadeśa, said under a pretext, where you name one thing and mean another. So the suggestion to Kṛṣṇa is declared twofold in this second way as well. (Two settings times two deliveries.)
vyapadeśa here is 'indirect designation, pretext' — speaking of one thing as a cover for another; it is the mode the illustration verse will use.

mādhava kalāpinīyaṁ na savidham āyāti me durārādhā |

iyaṁthis one hereयह

savidhamnear, to my sideसमीप, पास
meto me / by me — one small word the two commentators will construe oppositely Jīva reads it 'by me,' Viśvanātha reads it 'to my side'मेरे — (जीव: 'मेरे द्वारा'; विश्वनाथ: 'मेरे पास')
durārādhāso hard to win over — and, by śleṣa, carrying the suggested lady's 'glossy' descriptionकठिनाई से प्रसन्न होने वाली
mādhava — O Mādhava; iyaṁ kalāpinī durārādhā — this peahen, so hard to tame; me savidham na āyāti — will not come near me.
The illustration verse. On the surface: 'O Mādhava, this peahen will not come near me — she is so hard to coax.' But every key word is a śleṣa, a double meaning. Underneath, the go-between is really saying: this ornamented lady, his beloved, so hard to win over, will not come to me. She speaks of a bird and means the beloved. This is the pretext (vyapadeśa) delivery defined just above.
An udāharaṇa of the vyaṅgya-dūtī, the go-between who conveys by suggestion, defined at 7.77-78. Viśvanātha names the speaker: Viśākhā, addressing Kṛṣṇa under cover of talk about a peahen. In Āryā meter.

tad — so; nija-pāṇinā — with your own hand; enāṁ prasīda — be gracious to her; tūrṇaṁ adya gṛhāṇa — quickly, today, take hold of her.
'So, with your own hand, be kind to her and catch her yourself — quickly, today.' Surface sense: go catch the peahen yourself. Suggested sense: with your own hand win the beloved over, relent toward her, and take her to yourself now. Under cover of the runaway bird, the go-between is setting up the meeting.
This second line completes the same śleṣa: the peahen-catching is the cover, the winning of the beloved is the message.

kalāpinī — barhiṇī (peahen); pakṣe — bhūṣaṇavatī (an ornamented woman).
Jīva glosses kalāpinī. Straight sense: a peahen (barhiṇī). In the other reading (pakṣe) — the suggested layer — it is a woman wearing ornaments. One word, two live senses at once: that is the śleṣa the whole verse turns on.

amara-nānārthātbecause Amara's list of a word's several meanings says so ablative of authority / sourceअमरकोष के नानार्थ वर्ग के प्रमाण से
kalāpaḥ bhūṣaṇe barhe iti — 'kalāpa means ornament, means peacock-tail'; amara-nānārthāt — on the authority of Amara's nānārtha (multiple-meaning) section.
Why may one word carry both senses? Because Amarakoṣa, in its section on words with several meanings (nānārtha), gives kalāpa = ornament and kalāpa = peacock-tail. So kalāpinī, 'she who has a kalāpa,' can be the bejewelled lady or the peahen. The lexicon is the warrant for the double reading.
Why cited: Amarakoṣa's multiple-meaning list, adduced to license both senses of kalāpinī at once: since kalāpa itself means both 'ornament' and 'peacock-tail,' the derived kalāpinī can be read as either the bejewelled woman or the peahen.

me mayā durārādhā kṛcchreṇārādhyā |
me'me' here stands for mayā — 'by me' Jīva construes the genitive with the propitiating, not with 'coming near''मे' शब्द का अर्थ

durārādhāhard to propitiateदुराराध्या
kṛcchreṇa ārādhyāone who can be won over only with great difficultyकठिनाई से आराधना करने योग्य
me — mayā (by me); durārādhā — kṛcchreṇa ārādhyā, propitiable only with great difficulty.
Jīva takes 'me' as an instrumental — 'by me' — and unpacks durārādhā as kṛcchreṇa ārādhyā: one you can win over only with great effort. So his line reads: 'she whom I can propitiate only with great difficulty.'

How can 'me,' a genitive, mean 'by me,' an instrumental? Jīva gives two routes and settles on neither. First: since a relation is being expressed, it is an agent-genitive doing the third case's job — the genitive form carries the instrumental sense. Or (vā) 'me' is simply an indeclinable particle. He leaves both standing.

The śleṣa pivot. The same run of sounds that gave 'me durārādhā' is re-divided, and out of it Jīva lifts the word medurā, which he glosses snigdhā: glossy, richly tender. He gives only this much for the other layer — medurā = snigdhā — and stops there.

Viśvanātha reads 'me' differently from Jīva. For him 'me' is a plain genitive, mama, going with 'nearness': she does not come to my side. Why not? Because she is durārādhā — which he glosses na vaśyā, 'won't be brought under control.' That is his sense of the line. (Jīva had tied 'me' to the propitiating, 'by me'; Viśvanātha ties it to the coming-near. The two constructions are left unreconciled.)
