The sakhī loves her friend more than she loves her own self. And that love runs both ways, between the two of them. It carries no guile — it is sincere, with no ulterior motive.
जो अपने से भी बढ़कर परस्पर प्रेम करती हो, और वह प्रेम निष्कपट हो — बिना किसी छल या भीतरी हेतु के।
This verse, opened by the lead-in atha sakhī, is the lakṣaṇa (defining verse) of the sakhī, the intimate girlfriend of the heroine; L1 states the love that defines her, L2 states her trust and her likeness.
यह श्लोक, जिसका आरम्भ 'अथ सखी' से हुआ है, सखी का लक्षण-श्लोक है — नायिका की अन्तरंग सखी का। पहली पंक्ति उस प्रेम को बताती है जो उसे परिभाषित करता है, और दूसरी पंक्ति उसके विश्वास और समानता को बताती है।
