Opens the definition (lakṣaṇa) of the nisṛṣṭārthā dūtī, the type set up by the lead-in 'atha nisṛṣṭārthā—'. 'Nisṛṣṭārtha' means the one to whom the matter (artha) has been handed over (nisṛṣṭa): she is trusted with the whole affair, not just a message.

An udāharaṇa (illustrative verse, 7.58) of the nisṛṣṭārthā defined in 7.57 (L1–L2). The speaker is the dūtī, addressing Kṛṣṇa (aghadamana) and praising the heroine she serves. Both Jīva and Viśvanātha read her feigned self-reproach as covertly displaying her fitness as the go-between; neither names the heroine, so the decode keeps her generic.

dhik — shame on me!; apaṭu-matiḥ asmi — I am dull-witted; yat — seeing that; purastāt — right before [you].
Shame on me — I am a dull-witted fool! — that here in your presence…
The sentence runs on into L6: dhik governs the accusative udyatām there ('shame on me… who stood ready'), while apaṭu-matiḥ asmi is a parallel confession, 'I am a fool.'

…before you — a hard gem — I dared stand ready to describe her. Shame on me!
kaṭhina-maṇeḥ carries the verse's headline śleṣa: literally 'hard jewel' — a diamond, dazzling to look at but hard to the touch — and, covertly, 'you hard-hearted one.' By addressing Kṛṣṇa as a 'hard gem' the dūtī praises his brilliance while hinting at his cold indifference toward the heroine. Jīva (s3–s6) and Viśvanātha (s10–s11) each unfold this two-layer reading.

Jīva: Then, although her mistress really did send her, with 'dhig apaṭu-matir asmi' she denies it — 'this is entirely my own speech.' And just by that she shows she is acting solely for the girl's good, so that she is really the girl's own stand-in. In this hidden way the verse suggests the very mark of a nisṛṣṭārthā — that the whole burden was placed on her.
Jīva ties the illustrative verse back to the definition: tan-nyasta-bhāratva is the vinyasta-kārya-bhārā of L1. The point is that a true nisṛṣṭārthā masks her commission and speaks as if on her own initiative — which is exactly the second defining trait, acting by her own discretion.

The analogy (spelled out fully by s5–s6): the gem is Kṛṣṇa; the diamond's brilliance is his dazzling beauty; the hardness felt on touch is his cold indifference. It dazzles the eye but gives nothing to the one who draws near.

Jīva: — and it is not like a camphor-gem, which under heat gives off at least some coolness and softness. The hard gem is not even that. That is the meaning.
The camphor-gem (karpūra-maṇi) is the foil: warmth at least draws a trace of moist softness (snigdha) from it. The diamond — Kṛṣṇa — yields no such tenderness at all. 'snigdha' (cool, moist, loving) is picked up again by Viśvanātha's snigdhatva at s11.

tat idaṁ tu — but this speech here; tasya sākūtam audāsīnyaṁ dṛṣṭvā — seeing his deliberate indifference; sa-praṇaya-kopaṁ vacanam — is an utterance of loving pique.
Jīva: So this whole speech is spoken in loving anger — she sees his studied, deliberate coolness [toward the girl] and reproaches him out of affection.
This closes the analogy's mapping: the gem's 'hardness' is Kṛṣṇa's audāsīnya (indifference), which the messenger has noticed. Her praise-turned-reproach is therefore praṇaya-kopa, the affectionate anger of one who is close enough to scold.

Viśvanātha: So even your eye, wanting only to take in her beauty, can find no price that would buy it. Of her fragrance and sweet voice, caught by nose and ear, what need be said? And of inner virtues like steadiness — how far more priceless still! That is the sense.

tava ekena kaṭhoratva-guṇena hifor by your one quality of hardness — your coldness (kaṭhoratva) hi — 'for', giving the reason; unpacks the śleṣa kaṭhina = hard-heartedक्योंकि तेरे एक कठोरता-गुण के कारण ही

sarve eva guṇāḥall your virtues without exception eva — every one of themतेरे सभी गुण

tava ekena kaṭhoratva-guṇena hi — for by your single quality of hardness; sarve eva guṇāḥ uparaktāḥ — all your virtues, tinged by it; alpa-mūlyāḥ abhūvan — became of little worth.
Viśvanātha: Here the 'hard gem' turns from a diamond into a hard heart. For your one quality of hardness stains every one of your virtues, and so they all sink to little worth.
This is where Viśvanātha unfolds the śleṣa of kaṭhina-maṇeḥ (L6): kaṭhina, 'hard' of a gem, is read as kaṭhoratva, hard-heartedness. A diamond's hardness lowers its worth against a softer, cooler gem; likewise Kṛṣṇa's one coldness drags down all his other excellences.

Viśvanātha: But her virtues, adorned by the single quality of tenderness, rise to the very highest excellence. That is the difference — and that is the sense.
The śleṣa's payoff: Kṛṣṇa's one hardness (kaṭhoratva) sinks all his virtues; the heroine's one tenderness (snigdhatva) lifts all of hers — the same hard-gem/soft-gem contrast Jīva draws with diamond vs. camphor-gem (s4–s5).

Viśvanātha: The earlier verse carried its telltale mark ('she pressed the matter by extolling the girl's qualities') and the later one carried its own ('the message secretly delivered'); but this verse shows no such distinctive mark of either the amitārthā or the letter-carrier (patra-hārī). So by elimination, what is left, she can only be the nisṛṣṭārthā.
An argument by pāriśeṣya (elimination — 'the residue'): the distinctive mark (asādhāraṇa lakṣaṇa) of two other messenger-types is absent here — the amitārthā, marked elsewhere by 'varṇair nunoda' (pressing the matter by praising qualities), and the patra-hārī or letter-carrier, marked by 'nibhṛtam arpitā sandeśa-vāk' (a message quietly delivered). With those ruled out, the remaining type is the nisṛṣṭārthā.
