sā te bakāntaka kaṭākṣa-śarārditāpi
she — the heroine [Rādhā], the one on whose behalf I speakवह (राधा)
teyour — with the sidelong glance that follows genitive, held over to qualify kaṭākṣa in the compoundतेरे (कटाक्ष के) — आगे समास में कटाक्ष का विशेषण
bakāntakaO Baka-slayer [Kṛṣṇa] vocative; the messenger is addressing himहे बकासुर-नाशक (कृष्ण)! — सम्बोधन
kaṭākṣa-śarārditā apithough struck by the arrow of your sidelong glance api = 'though' — concessive, setting up the 'yet she wears armor' of L2कटाक्ष रूपी बाणों से घायल होने पर भी ('अपि' = यद्यपि)
he bakāntaka — O Baka-slayer; — she; te kaṭākṣa-śara-arditā api — though wounded by the arrow of your sidelong glance …
— वह (राधा); te — तेरे; bakāntaka — हे बकासुर-नाशक; kaṭākṣa-śarārditā api — कटाक्ष-बाणों से घायल होकर भी
She — Rādhā — O Baka-slayer Kṛṣṇa, though already pierced by the arrow of your sidelong glance … (the sentence runs on into the next lines).
हे बकासुर के नाशक कृष्ण! वह राधा तेरे कटाक्ष रूपी बाणों से घायल होकर भी —
An illustrative verse (udāharaṇa; the unit's lead-in is yathā—). It illustrates the amitārthā dūtī — the go-between who comes unbidden, having read the heroine's state on her own — the type Viśvanātha names at the close (s7). Throughout, the speaker is the messenger, addressing Kṛṣṇa (bakāntaka); 'sā' is Rādhā.
यह उदाहरण-श्लोक है, जो प्रकरण के 'यथा' कहकर आया है। यह उस अमितार्था दूती का उदाहरण है जो बिना बुलाए, नायिका की दशा स्वयं भाँपकर आ जाती है — वही भेद जिसे विश्वनाथ अन्त में (s7) नाम लेकर बताते हैं। पूरे श्लोक में बोलने वाली दूती है, जो कृष्ण (बकनाशक) को सम्बोधित कर रही है; 'सा' राधा है।

vahantī[still] wearing feminine present participle agreeing with sāधारण करती हुई ('सा' के साथ स्त्रीलिंग वर्तमान कृदन्त)
— she; jīrṇaṁ trapā-kavacam eva — that very tattered armor of modesty; vṛthā — in vain; vahantī — goes on wearing.
jīrṇaṁ — जीर्ण; trapā-kavacam — लज्जा-कवच को; eva — ही; vṛthā — व्यर्थ; vahantī — धारण करती हुई
She keeps wearing — uselessly — the worn-out armor of a young woman's modesty. It is in vain because your glance-arrow has already pierced her: the shield could not stop it.
लज्जा रूपी जीर्ण कवच को व्यर्थ ही धारण किए हुए है।

varṇair nunoda mukha-candra-vigāhibharmāṁ
varṇaiḥwith varṇas — the pivot-word: either 'letters / syllables' (a message) or 'colors, complexion' (the pallor of her face) instrumental of means; this is the verse's śleṣa, settled only in L4वर्णों के द्वारा — यहीं श्लेष है (अक्षर अथवा रंग), जो L4 में ही तय होता है
mukha-candra-vigāhibhiḥthat plunge into / soak her moon-face qualifies varṇaiḥ; suits 'colors pervading the face' as readily as 'syllables issuing from the mouth'मुख रूपी चन्द्र में प्रवेश करने वाले — 'वर्ण' का विशेषण; 'मुख पर व्याप्त रंगों' और 'मुख से निकलते अक्षरों' दोनों में समान रूप से बैठता है
nunodaimpelled, sent forth 3rd sg. perfect of nud; Viśvanātha glosses it prerayām āsa (s2)प्रेरित किया (नुद् धातु का लिट्; विश्वनाथ इसे 'प्रेरयामास' से समझाते हैं — s2)
māmme — the messengerमुझे
— she; mukha-candra-vigāhibhiḥ varṇaiḥ — with varṇas that dive into her moon-face; mām — me; nunoda — sent.
varṇaiḥ — वर्णों से; mukha-candra-vigāhibhiḥ — मुख-चन्द्र में प्रवेश करने वाले; nunoda — प्रेरित किया; mām — मुझे
She sent me with varṇas that plunge into her moon-face. Here the verse turns on a double sense: varṇa can mean the 'letters' of a written message, or the 'colors' — the pallor — of her complexion. The line holds both open; L4 decides between them.
उसने मुख रूपी चन्द्र में व्याप्त वर्णों के द्वारा मुझे प्रेरित किया। यहाँ 'वर्ण' दोनों अर्थ लिए हुए है — अक्षर और रंग; कौन-सा अभीष्ट है, यह अगली पंक्ति में खुलेगा।
The śleṣa on varṇa (akṣara 'letter/syllable' vs. varṇa 'color, complexion') is the verse's headline device. Viśvanātha's dialogue (s2–s6) runs a hearer through the wrong readings — written letters, then spoken syllables — before the eyes-not-ears clue in L4 fixes it as the face's pallor.

gamyair dṛśāṁ guṇatayā na kila śrutīnām ||
gamyaiḥknowable, to be apprehended qualifies varṇaiḥ of L3ग्राह्य / जानने योग्य — L3 के 'वर्ण' का विशेषण
dṛśāṁby the eyes — as their object genitive of the sense whose object the varṇas areनेत्रों के — जिस इन्द्रिय के विषय ये वर्ण हैं
guṇatayāas their object (guṇa here = viṣaya, 'sense-object') Jīva glosses guṇatayā = viṣayatayā (c1); so 'graspable as the eyes' object'विषय रूप में (जीव इसे 'विषयतया' से समझाते हैं — c1)
na kilasurely not, certainly not kila marks the point as settled / well-knownनिश्चय ही नहीं ('किल' बात के सुनिश्चित / प्रसिद्ध होने को दिखाता है)
śrutīnāmby the ears genitive parallel to dṛśāṁ; the contrast that decides the śleṣaकानों के — 'दृशाम्' के समानान्तर; यही अन्तर श्लेष का निर्णय करता है
varṇaiḥ — [those varṇas]; dṛśāṁ guṇatayā — as the object of the eyes; gamyaiḥ — knowable; na kila śrutīnām — surely not of the ears.
gamyaiḥ — ग्राह्य; dṛśāṁ — नेत्रों के; guṇatayā — विषय रूप में; na kila — निश्चय ही नहीं; śrutīnām — कानों के
These varṇas are grasped by the eyes as their object — certainly not by the ears. That decides the pun: they are not letters read aloud, nor syllables spoken, but the visible pallor of her face. The pallor itself is her message.
वे वर्ण नेत्रों के विषय रूप में ग्राह्य हैं, न कि निश्चय ही कानों के। इससे श्लेष स्थिर हो जाता है — ये अक्षर नहीं, बल्कि आँखों से दिखने वाली मुख की कान्ति हैं।

guṇatayā viṣayatayā guṇā guṇeṣu vartanta itivat ||
guṇatayā[the verse's word] 'as-guṇa''गुणतया' का अर्थ —
viṣayatayāmeans 'as the object (viṣaya)' Jīva's equation: guṇa = viṣaya, sense-objectविषय रूप में (जीव की समता: गुण = विषय)
guṇā guṇeṣu vartante iti-vatjust as in 'the guṇas operate among the guṇas,' where guṇa means a sense-object -vat = 'on the model of'; supplies a usage where guṇa = viṣaya'गुण गुणों में प्रवृत्त होते हैं' — इस प्रयोग के समान ('-वत्' = इसी ढंग पर); जहाँ 'गुण' का अर्थ विषय है
guṇatayā — [the verse's] 'as-guṇa'; viṣayatayā — means 'as the object'; guṇā guṇeṣu vartante iti-vat — on the model of 'the guṇas operate among the guṇas.'
guṇatayā — 'गुणतया' अर्थात्; viṣayatayā — विषय रूप में; guṇā guṇeṣu vartante iti-vat — 'गुण गुणों में रहते हैं' इस प्रयोग के समान
Jīva pins down guṇatayā: it means viṣayatayā, 'as the object.' He backs it with the familiar phrase 'guṇā guṇeṣu vartante' — 'the guṇas move among the guṇas' — where guṇa means a sense-object. So dṛśāṁ guṇatayā = 'as the object of the eyes.'
'गुणतया' का अर्थ है 'विषय रूप में' — ठीक वैसे ही जैसे 'गुण गुणों में प्रवृत्त होते हैं' इस प्रयोग में 'गुण' का अर्थ विषय है।
The phrase guṇā guṇeṣu vartante is a Sāṅkhya idiom (Bhagavad-gītā 3.28) in which the senses (one guṇa) engage their objects (another guṇa). Jīva borrows it only to license the sense guṇa = viṣaya here — not for its Sāṅkhya doctrine.
'गुण गुणों में प्रवृत्त होते हैं' यह सांख्य का प्रयोग है (गीता 3.28), जहाँ इन्द्रियाँ (एक गुण) अपने विषयों (दूसरे गुण) में प्रवृत्त होती हैं। जीव इसे केवल इतने के लिए उद्धृत करते हैं कि यहाँ 'गुण' का अर्थ 'विषय' सिद्ध हो जाए — सांख्य के सिद्धान्त के लिए नहीं।

Viśvanātha sets the scene: a letter-carrying go-between, having read the heroine's unspoken hint, discloses her state to Kṛṣṇa on the pretext of bringing a letter — and so the verse 'sā te baka…' begins. (The 'letter' framing is the mask; the dialogue will strip it away.)

'No, no,' she says — 'these varṇas are grasped by the eyes as their object, not by the ears.' (guṇatayā = viṣayatayā, 'as object.') इसलिए उसके मुख की म्लान कान्ति देखकर, उसके द्वारा बिना भेजी हुई ही मैं स्वयं आ गई हूँ — मुझे अमितार्था दूती जानो। यही भाव है।
The dialogue steps through three named messenger-types of this dūtī-bheda chapter: the patrahārī (letter-carrier, s1/s4), the nisṛṣṭārthā (entrusted to deliver the message in her own speech, s6), and finally the amitārthā — the unbidden, self-appointed go-between who reads the heroine's state and comes on her own initiative, which is the type this verse illustrates.
