pālī karṇa-latāgre syāt iti viśvaḥ ||
pālīthe word pālī the lemma being defined'पाली' — जिस पद की परिभाषा दी जा रही है
karṇa-latāgre syātmeans the tip of the ear-creeper — the top edge of the ear syāt 'would be,' the lexicon's defining optative; karṇa-latā = the ear likened to a creeper, agre 'at the tip'कान रूपी लता के अग्रभाग (सिरे) पर होती है — 'स्यात्' कोष की परिभाषा-विधि है
iti viśvaḥso says the Viśva[-prakāśa] lexicon iti closes the quoted definition; Viśva = the Viśva-prakāśa koṣaऐसा 'विश्व' (विश्व-प्रकाश कोष) कहता है — 'इति' से उद्धरण समाप्त होता है
pālī — the word pālī; karṇa-latāgre syāt — is at the tip of the ear-creeper (the ear's upper edge); iti viśvaḥ — so the Viśva lexicon.
Jīva fixes the word pālī. By the Viśva[-prakāśa] lexicon it means the tip of the 'ear-creeper' — the upper edge of the ear. So karṇa-pālī in the verse is the rim of the ear, the very spot where she sets the clove-cluster.
Why cited: the Viśva-prakāśa lexicon is adduced to pin pālī to one sense — the upper edge of the ear — so that karṇa-pālī = the ear's rim.

nālīka-netrā kamala-locanā śleṣeṇa vyartha-netrā śrī-kṛṣṇa-mukha-śobhā-pāyitvāt ||
śleṣeṇaand by śleṣa (a pun, a second sense standing at the same time) instrumental — 'by way of the double meaning'श्लेष के द्वारा, दोहरे अर्थ से
vyartha-netrāit also reads 'her eyes in vain, useless-eyed' the śleṣa reading; nālīka also carries a sense of 'empty, hollow, of no use,' yielding vyartha 'in vain'व्यर्थ नेत्रोंवाली — यह श्लेष-अर्थ है (नालीक में 'खोखला, निष्फल' का भी भाव)
śrī-kṛṣṇa-mukha-śobhā-pāyitvātbecause they are made to drink in the beauty of Śrī Kṛṣṇa's face ablative of cause; pā 'drink' in the causative + -tva, 'because of their drinking-in'क्योंकि वे श्रीकृष्ण के मुख की शोभा का पान कर लेते हैं
nālīka-netrā — the word 'nālīka-netrā'; kamala-locanā — [means] 'lotus-eyed'; śleṣeṇa — by śleṣa; vyartha-netrā — [it also reads] 'useless-eyed'; śrī-kṛṣṇa-mukha-śobhā-pāyitvāt — because her eyes drink in the beauty of Kṛṣṇa's face.
Viśvanātha opens the pun in 'nālīka-netrā.' On the surface it is 'lotus-eyed.' But by śleṣa it reads at the same time as 'vyartha-netrā' — her eyes are in vain, good for nothing else — because they are wholly taken up drinking in the beauty of Śrī Kṛṣṇa's face. Both senses stand together: lovely lotus-eyes, and eyes that have lost all other use to Kṛṣṇa's face.
