śṛṇvato’pi harer matvā vyājāt aśrutivat kila |
śṛṇvataḥ api hareḥthough Hari is right there listening genitive of Hari + concessive api — the object she pretends can't hear actually hears every wordयद्यपि हरि (सब कुछ) सुन रहे हैं, फिर भी उन्हीं को (लक्ष्य कर)
matvāhaving made up her mind to treat him so(उन्हें बहरा) मानकर
vyājāton some pretext ablative of means — the pretext is her cover for speakingकिसी बहाने के द्वारा
aśruti-vatas if he does not hear -vat = 'as if / like'; governs matvā — she acts as though he were deaf to herमानो वे सुनते ही न हों — ऐसा (बरतकर)
kilaso she makes out — flagging the pretenseऐसा (कवि) कहते हैं
hareḥ śṛṇvataḥ api — though Hari is listening; aśrutivat matvā — deciding to treat him as one who does not hear; vyājāt kila — on a pretext, so she pretends; (the sentence completes in L2)
Here is the definition. Hari is standing right there and hears everything. But the woman, on some pretext, carries on as if he cannot hear her at all. She has made up her mind to play it that way.
This is the lakṣaṇa (definition) verse for the puraḥstha-viṣaya, the fifth kind of covert speech (jalpa): talk aimed at a listener who is present in front.

agrataḥ sthite jantau — when the person stands before her; jalpaḥ — the chatter; puraḥstha-viṣayaḥ mataḥ — is held to be the 'object-set-before' kind
When the one she is really addressing stands right in front of her, that chatter is counted as the puraḥstha-viṣaya — the kind whose target is present before her eyes.

The example. A gopī stands before Kṛṣṇa and pretends to scold a flowering vine: 'Why am I being called, and by you of all things? With the buzzing of your bees you keep summoning me...'
An udāharaṇa (illustrative verse) of the puraḥstha-viṣaya defined just above in 7.21. She speaks to a mālatī creeper while Kṛṣṇa — present before her — is the one she truly addresses, through the double sense of punnāga (L6).

'...calling me, O mālatī, with all that humming, just to come and pluck your blossoms.' The whole complaint is a screen; she has no interest in the vine's flowers.

āmoda-pūrṇaṁbrimming with fragrance accusative — describes punnāga in L6सुगन्ध से परिपूर्ण (जो पुन्नाग का वर्णन करता है)
sumanobhiḥ āśritaṁwith flowers clustered on it instrumental; sumanas = 'flower', and also 'the good-hearted' — the pun runs on to the tree's second senseफूलों से — (श्लेष में) सज्जनों से — आश्रित
āmoda-pūrṇaṁ — full of fragrance; sumanobhiḥ āśritaṁ — resorted to by flowers; (object of kāmaye in L6)
'What I long for is the one that is full of fragrance and covered with blossoms...' On the surface she means a tree in bloom. But sumanas also means 'the good-hearted', setting up the double reading that lands on the next word.

punnāgam eva pramadena kāmaye ||
punnāgam evaonly the punnāga accusative + restrictive eva — 'that alone, nothing else'; the pun wordपुन्नाग वृक्ष को ही (और किसी को नहीं — यही श्लेष का पद है)
pramadenawith delight instrumental of mannerबड़े हर्ष से
punnāgam eva — only the punnāga; pramadena — with joy; kāmaye — do I long for
'It is only the punnāga tree that I want, and gladly.' The śleṣa is the headline: punnāga splits into pum-nāga, a tree, and Puruṣottama, Kṛṣṇa. So while she seems to tell the vine she cares only for a certain tree, she is really declaring, in his very presence, that Kṛṣṇa alone is her heart's desire.
The pun is unlocked by the included commentators: Jīva and Viśvanātha both gloss punnāga as Puruṣottama, Śrī Kṛṣṇa (see the two commentary atoms). This is what makes the verse a puraḥstha-viṣaya — the true object stands before her while she talks past him to the vine.

Jīva points to the pun. On the suggested layer, punnāga is Puruṣottama, Kṛṣṇa. Both senses hold at once — that is the whole force of the verse.
