An udāharaṇa illustrating vyapadeśa, 'indirect indication by pretext', the mode just defined in 7.18 (L1). Viśvanātha sets the scene: a bold gopī, watching Kṛṣṇa eye a rival of hers, scolds him as a rutting elephant that leaves the Gaṅgā for a muddy river — meaning he leaves her, the superior lady, for an inferior woman. Every line runs on two tracks (elephant/rivers and Kṛṣṇa/two women) at once.

Second pun: ghana-rasa is 'abundant liquid', i.e. water, on the river track; and 'dense rasa', i.e. śṛṅgāra-rasa, on the woman track.

surāṇāṁ taraṅgiṇīṁ gaṅgāṁ, surateṣu raṅgiṇīṁ ca |
surāṇāṁ taraṅgiṇīṁ gaṅgāṁthe river of the gods — the Gaṅgā split sura-taraṅgiṇī: 'river (taraṅgiṇī) of the gods (sura)'सुरों (देवताओं) की तरंगिणी अर्थात् गंगा को

surāṇāṁ taraṅgiṇīṁ gaṅgāṁ — the gods' river, the Gaṅgā; surateṣu raṅgiṇīṁ ca — and also her who revels in love-play.
The key pun of the verse: sura-taraṅgiṇī splits two ways. As sura-taraṅgiṇī it is 'the river of the gods', the Gaṅgā; re-cut as surata-raṅgiṇī it is 'she who revels in love-play' — the speaker herself.

payo jalaṁ payodharau stanau ca |
payodharau stanau caand payodharas ('water-bearers') are the two breasts ca marks the second sense; payodhara = cloud/water-holder = breast — the śleṣa in malīmasa-payodharā (L4)और 'पयोधर' (श्लेष से) दो स्तन हैं
payaḥ — payas; jalaṁ — is water; payodharau stanau ca — and payodharas are the two breasts.
Underneath 'malīmasa-payodharā' (L4) lies this pun: payas is 'water', so payodhara is the water-bearing cloud/river; but payodhara equally means 'breast'. So 'dark-watered' also reads 'dusky-breasted'.

padmin he hastin, pakṣe līlā-kamala-dhārin |
padmin he hastinpadmin — O elephant! vocative; padmin literally 'the lotus-one', a stock name for an elephant'पद्मिन्' — हे हाथी!
pakṣe līlā-kamala-dhārinon the other reading, O holder of a play-lotus (i.e. Kṛṣṇa) pakṣe = 'in the alternate sense'; līlā-kamala = a lotus twirled in playदूसरे पक्ष में — हे लीला-कमल धारण करने वाले (कृष्ण)!
padmin — padmin; he hastin — means 'O elephant'; pakṣe līlā-kamala-dhārin — in the other reading, 'O bearer of a play-lotus'.
The address padmin works both ways: 'O elephant' (padmin is a name for the tusker) on the surface, and 'O you who twirl a play-lotus' — that is, Kṛṣṇa — underneath.

pāpaṁ caand also sin ca marks the second sense of paṅka — feeds paṅkilā (L5)और (श्लेष से) पाप भी है
paṅkaḥ — paṅka; kardamaḥ — is mud; pāpaṁ ca — and also sin.
The pun behind 'paṅkilā' (L5): paṅka is 'mud' for the river, and 'sin' for the woman. So the muddy river is also the sin-stained rival.

asyāḥ ajñatvāt iti arthaḥand this because she is ignorant — that is the sense ablative of cause: ajñatvāt = 'owing to her lack of skill'क्योंकि यह अनजान (अकुशल) है — ऐसा अर्थ है
karma-nāśāṁ — Karmanāśā; magadha-deśīya-pāpa-nadīm — the sin-river of Magadha; pakṣe vidagdha-kriyāṇāṁ nāśaḥ lopaḥ yasyām — on the other reading, she in whom refined arts are lost; asyāḥ ajñatvāt iti arthaḥ — because she is ignorant, is the sense.
Karmanāśā is, on the river track, a 'rite-destroying' sin-river of Magadha. On the woman track the name reads 'she in whom the refined arts of love are lost' — because the rival is a clumsy, ignorant lover. So the very name insults her.

And the little word puraḥ, 'in front', does double duty. On the surface the Gaṅgā flows 'in front' of the elephant; underneath it points to the speaker herself — 'me, standing right here before you'.

Viśvanātha rounds it off with the wordless reply. Having heard the reproach, Kṛṣṇa answers her with just a sidelong glance that says: 'Then you — go into the grove up ahead.' That silent invitation, he says, is how the exchange should be understood.
