kadambāraṇyānāṁ kitava vikacaṁ luṇṭhasi navaṁ
kadambāraṇyānāṁof the kadamba groves gen. pl.; on the surface it goes with the jasmine, but Viśvanātha attaches it to 'rogue' — the cheat of the kadamba forestकदम्ब के वनों का — ऊपर से तो यह नीचे की चमेली से जुड़ता है, पर विश्वनाथ इसे 'ठग' से जोड़ते हैं — कदम्ब-वन का ठग
kitavaO rogue! vocative — she opens by branding him a cheatअरे ठग!
kadambāraṇyānāṁ — of the kadamba groves; kitava — O rogue; navaṁ vikacaṁ [malli-paṭalam] — the fresh, blossoming [jasmine]; luṇṭhasi — you plunder
'O rogue of the kadamba groves! You plunder my fresh, full-blown jasmine.' She addresses Kṛṣṇa as a thief and accuses him of robbing her flowers.
An udāharaṇa of arthottha — a self-solicitation (svābhiyoga) that arises on the pretext of some matter or occasion; here the gopī turns the 'theft' of her flowers and necklace into the occasion for approaching Kṛṣṇa. Jīva names the act her own self-approach (svayam abhiyogaḥ).

mad-utsaṅgād — from my lap; diṣṭyā — by luck; vara-parimalaṁ malli-paṭalam — the choicely-fragrant mass of jasmine; [luṇṭhasi] — [you plunder]
'...the choicely fragrant heap of jasmine, right out of my lap — lucky you!' The theft is bold, taken from her very lap; 'by luck' is her half-teasing reproach.

'And if you snatch away my glittering necklace too — who here is there to protect me?' On the surface a helpless lament. But hidden in it is the invitation: since no one else is near, YOU must be the one to take me in. This is the pivot — the reproach is really a solicitation.

'...seeing the village is far away, and this grove is empty of people.' Read as a complaint, it means: no help is at hand. Read as the invitation it truly is, it means: no one is watching, the coast is clear. The two layers sit in one breath — that is the whole art of the verse.

mantavyaḥmust be understoodसमझना चाहिए
kadambāraṇyānī ity ādau — in the verse beginning thus; yadyapi tena svayaṁ mahān udyamaḥ kṛtaḥ — although the great effort was made by him himself; tathāpi tasyāḥ svayam abhiyogaḥ tu — still her own self-approach; autsukya-svabhāvāt eva mantavyaḥ — must be understood as springing precisely from her eager nature
Jīva settles a possible doubt. In this verse it may look as though Kṛṣṇa did all the work himself — the great effort of provoking her. Even so, her coming-forward is her own. It must be understood as springing purely from her eager nature, not merely as a reaction to him.

Viśvanātha unpacks the word 'rogue.' Kṛṣṇa poses as the forest's keeper — 'this grove is mine to guard' — but under that pretense he is simply a thief. So 'O cheat of the kadamba grove' is her real charge.

Here Viśvanātha names the hidden purport. The words 'the village is far, the grove is empty' are not really a lament. With them she signals two things: that their union would be fitting, and that nothing stands in its way. The complaint is the surface; the invitation is what is actually being said.
