A bold gopī-leader halts Kṛṣṇa on the road with words that mean two things at once. On the surface: 'O rogue of Vraja, don't block my path! Look — the sun has thrown its glance to the sky's edge; evening is falling.' Underneath, by re-splitting the very same sounds, the scolding turns into its opposite: 'a-dhvānam' — soundlessly — 'don't court me' (so Jīva), and 'ambara' shifts to the edge of her garment. Viśvanātha even hears 'vraja' as 'go away.'
This verse is the udāharaṇa (illustration) for the type of suggested speech named in the lead-in: ākṣepeṇa śabd-uttho vyaṅgyaḥ — a meaning suggested by the word itself through ākṣepa, the figure of a feigned prohibition that in fact conveys its opposite.

Suggested: 'until this body of mine goes still, stunned with feeling, O devious one, I fall into pallor' — the pallor an involuntary love-symptom. Jīva notes that vaivarṇya, unlike the other words, is no pun: it means loss-of-colour in both readings. The feigned complaint is at heart a plea to be joined with him.

Jīva's first reading, plain and literal: 'O rogue of Vraja, don't block the path.' He reads the verse's vṛṇu as āvṛṇu, 'cover, obstruct.'

The same syllables, re-split: 'adhvānam' becomes 'a-dhvānam,' soundlessly, and 'vṛṇu' now means 'court, accept.' So Jīva hears: 'silently, do not court me.' Being an ākṣepa — a feigned refusal — the very denial beckons him on.

kañculikayā ujjvalā tanuḥ dehaḥthe body (tanu = deha) bright with its bodice (kañculikā)कञ्चुलिका से उज्ज्वल, और 'तनु' = देह
vaivarṇyaṁ — vairūpyaṁ — disfigurement; pakṣe — in the second reading; navyā — stavyā — praiseworthy; tanuḥ — dehaḥ — the body; kañculikayā ujjvalā — bright with the bodice.

Viśvanātha finishes the surface sense — vaivarṇya as 'disfigurement' — then turns to the hidden reading afresh: 'navyā' now means praiseworthy, 'tanu' is her body, and 'kañculikā-ujjvalā' is 'bright in her bodice.'

vaivarṇyaṁ — sāttvika-bhāva-viśeṣam — a specific involuntary sign of love.

In the hidden reading vaivarṇya is not mere fading but pallor as a sāttvika-bhāva — one of the involuntary bodily signs of intense love. Note the divergence: here Viśvanātha reads vaivarṇya as a pun after all, whereas Jīva had called it common to both readings.
sāttvika-bhāva — the involuntary bodily signs of deep emotion (a term of Bharata's rasa-theory carried into bhakti-rasa); the eight include tears, trembling, and vaivarṇya, change of colour.

tataś ca — and so; kiṁ vyagrā asi — why so anxious?; te payodharau spaṣṭa-indu-lekhā-śriyau kuru — make your two breasts bright with clear nail-mark beauty; iti tathā cakre — and thus it was done.

Viśvanātha spells out where the feigned scolding lands: 'Why so agitated? Come — let your breasts be marked bright again with fresh crescent scratches' — and, he says, 'so it was done.' The ākṣepa — the mock 'don't block me, go away' — has all along been an invitation to union, and union follows.
