Having laid out the qualities of the chief heroine, Rādhā, Rūpa Gosvāmī now turns to her friends in their role as her helpers. That is the verse 'yasyāḥ.'

The relative 'yasyāḥ' ('in whose band') needs an antecedent. Viśvanātha supplies it from the earlier verse: 'The qualities of the Queen of Vṛndāvana declared here are of four kinds.' That 'her' is the one referred to. The syntax hooks back to that line.

A grammatical worry: 'yasyāḥ' is a relative ('of whom'), so shouldn't there be a matching 'tat' ('of her')? No. When the relative 'yat' sits in the later clause, it needs no correlative 'tat' at all.

prāyeṇa iti uktyā — by saying 'mostly'; na sarvathā tulyatvam avasīyate — one concludes the equality is not total.
Why 'mostly'? The word is doing work. From it we conclude that the equality is not complete — these three kinds are like Rādhā, but not her equals in every way.

So the two kinds who do reach full equality are the priya-sakhīs and the parama-preṣṭha-sakhīs. From this, even though the friends number five kinds, a deeper twofold split emerges — soon to be explained — between those of uneven love (asama-sneha) and those of even love (sama-sneha).

An objection. 'Mostly equal' means these three kinds are slightly less than Rādhā. But an earlier definition said: 'Those equal in form and qualities are sakhīs; those slightly less are maidservants (dāsīs).' Put the two together and it follows that these three — sakhīs, nitya-sakhīs, prāṇa-sakhīs — are really dāsīs, not friends at all. An unwelcome result.
dāsī: a maidservant. The objection turns on a prior lakṣaṇa that pegs friend-vs-servant status precisely to whether one is fully equal or 'slightly less' than the heroine.

Look again at that rule. Its force lies in the little word 'kiñcit,' 'to some degree.' The rule is really about those who are inferior only to a certain degree — and 'to a degree' can be read two ways, as he now shows.

premādhikyama surplus of love [toward Kṛṣṇa]प्रेम की अधिकता
kadācit kaṭhora-māna-nibandhana-viraha-viṣaṇṇa-tanau śrī-kṛṣṇe — sometimes, when Kṛṣṇa's frame is worn by the separation born of harsh māna; rādhātaḥ api premādhikyam — a surplus of love over Rādhā [appears].
At another time the reverse: when Kṛṣṇa's body is worn thin by the separation that Rādhā's harsh māna has brought on, their love tilts toward Kṛṣṇa even more than toward Rādhā.
māna: the proud, jealous sulking of the heroine — here so 'hard' (kaṭhora) that it keeps the lovers apart and leaves Kṛṣṇa pining.

tatra kṛṣṇa-duḥkhasya rādhā-dattatvena anusaṁhitasya asahyatvam eva hetuḥ — there, the cause is just the unbearableness of Kṛṣṇa's suffering, felt as inflicted by Rādhā.
And here too the cause is the same in mirror image: Kṛṣṇa's suffering — felt as something Rādhā dealt him — is unbearable to the friends. That alone is the cause.

iva iti anena — by the word 'iva'; sūkṣma-buddhibhiḥ ādhikyasya aparigṛhītatvam uktam — it is stated that the discerning do not accept the surplus [as real].
Now the key word 'iva,' 'as it were.' By it the verse says that those of subtle discernment do not actually grant that there is any real surplus. It only appears so.

Why do the discerning withhold assent? Because when it comes to the unbearableness of the two's suffering, what the friends actually feel is equality. Each one's pain wounds them just as much. So the 'surplus' is only apparent.

The uneven-love friends (asama-sneha) are different. Whichever ones love the one more feel heightened joy and grief only in that one's joy and grief — not in the other's. This marks them off from the eight, whose feeling for both stays even.
This defines the asama-sneha type by contrast with the sama-sneha eight of s22–23: for the eight the pain of either wounds equally; for these, feeling swings with whichever of the pair they favor.
