vimukhī mā bhaveti |
vimukhī mā bhava iti'vimukhī mā bhava…' — taking up the verse by its opening words pratīka citing the verse's first words to announce which verse is being explained'विमुखी मा भव' — इस प्रकार (श्लोक के पहले शब्द उद्धृत करके बताते हैं कि किस श्लोक की व्याख्या हो रही है)
vimukhī mā bhava iti — [the verse beginning] 'do not turn your face away…' [is now taken up]
vimukhī mā bhava iti — 'विमुखी मा भव' इस पद से (श्लोक उठाया जाता है)।
Jīva opens by quoting the verse's first words, 'vimukhī mā bhava.' This is just his way of flagging which verse he is about to explain.
'विमुखी मा भव' — जीव गोस्वामी श्लोक का पहला पद उठाकर बताते हैं कि अब वे इसी श्लोक की व्याख्या करेंगे।
Quoting the opening words (pratīka) is the standard commentarial way to point to the verse under discussion.

vāmāyamānāṁ pūrva-rāgiṇīṁ prati — नखरे दिखाती, पूर्व-राग में पड़ी नायिका के प्रति; dūtī-vacanam — यह दूती का वचन है।
Jīva sets the scene. The girl is in pūrva-rāga, love before she has even met him, and she is being difficult, playing contrary. The verse is the go-between's speech aimed at that girl.
नायिका नखरे दिखा रही है, टेढ़ी हो रही है। वह पूर्व-राग में है — अर्थात् पहली भेंट से पहले ही प्रेम में पड़ी है। उसी के प्रति दूती यह कहती है। पूरा श्लोक दूती का वचन है।
pūrva-rāga is love that arises before the lovers meet, kindled by hearing or a glimpse; vāmā names the contrary, hard-to-win temperament the heroine is showing here.

amūḍha-vayasaṁ surūḍha-yauvanaṁ mādhavaṁ prati — toward Mādhava, whose youth is not raw but well-ripened; ādhāva — run!
amūḍha-vayasaṁ surūḍha-yauvanaṁ mādhavaṁ prati — कच्ची अवस्था वाले नहीं, भरे यौवन वाले माधव के प्रति; ādhāva — दौड़कर पहुँचो।
Jīva reads the surface command. The man is Mādhava, whose youth is not raw but fully ripened. Run to him. On the plain reading, the messenger is simply urging the girl toward Kṛṣṇa in his youthful prime.
जीव गोस्वामी 'समूढवयस' को इस तरह खोलते हैं। इसका अर्थ है — जिसकी अवस्था कच्ची नहीं, जिसका यौवन पूरी तरह पका है। ऐसे माधव के पास दौड़कर पहुँचो। यह श्लोक का सीधा आदेश है।
Jīva glosses samuḍha-vayasa positively: a-mūḍha ('not immature') and su-rūḍha-yauvana ('well-grown youth'). The scolding word is turned into praise of Kṛṣṇa's ripe kaiśora.

samūḍha-vayasam ity anena — 'समूढवयस' इस शब्द से; sa tu anyasyām āsakto bhaviṣyati eva — वह तो किसी और में आसक्त हो ही जाएगा; tvam eva anutapsyasi iti — और तुम ही पछताओगी; vyañjitam — यह ध्वनित किया गया है।
Jīva now finds a hidden warning in the same word. Because his youth is at its peak, if you delay, he will surely fasten on some other girl. And then you, and only you, will be the one who regrets it. The word does not say this outright; it suggests it.
'समूढवयस' शब्द से एक संकेत भी जताया जाता है। संकेत यह है — देर की तो वह किसी और में आसक्त हो ही जाएगा। और फिर तुम ही पछताओगी, और कोई नहीं। यह अर्थ सीधे नहीं कहा, केवल ध्वनित किया गया है।
vyañjita = 'suggested', the language of dhvani (suggestion): the word's plain sense is one thing, but it hints at a further meaning it does not state.
व्यञ्जित = जो शब्दों से सीधे न कहकर संकेत से जताया गया हो; यह काव्य का ध्वनि (सुझाया हुआ) अर्थ है।

Why does the verse scold her as 'mūḍhe,' foolish girl? To make that very warning unmistakable. Calling her a fool is the messenger showing her licensed boldness, driving the hint home so the girl cannot miss it.
इस संकेत को और स्पष्ट करने के लिए ही 'मूढ़े' कहा गया है। दूती नायिका को 'मूढ़े' कहती है — यह उसकी प्रगल्भता है, अर्थात् वचन में छूट-भरी दिलेरी।
pragalbhatva is the forward, confident boldness of speech proper to a trusted go-between; she is allowed to scold the heroine to her face for her own good.
प्रगल्भत्व = बोलने में निडर, बेझिझक दिलेरी — दूती को ऐसा तीखा बोलने की छूट है।

The sentence looked finished at 'run to Mādhava.' But because the messenger is bold, she adds one more word: 'rāgeṇa,' with passion. That extra word does two jobs. It presses the girl to go once more, and it names the abiding emotion behind it all, rāga, love itself.
दूती के इसी निडर बोलने के कारण एक बात और जुड़ी। 'आधाव' पर वाक्य पूरा-सा हो चुका था। पर अन्त में 'रागेण' शब्द जोड़ा गया। इससे दो बातें हुईं — फिर से जाने की प्रेरणा, और स्थायी-भाव (यहाँ राग यानी प्रेम) का निर्देश।
sthāyi-bhāva is the lasting, dominant emotion of a scene; here the added 'rāgeṇa' points to rāga (love) as the standing keynote that should drive her going.
स्थायी-भाव = रस का टिकने वाला मूल भाव; यहाँ वह राग (प्रेम) है, जिसकी ओर 'रागेण' शब्द इशारा करता है।

Here Jīva foregrounds the verse's central pun. The same sounds 'mādhavam ādhāva' can be re-cut three ways. One: 'run to Mādhava.' Two: 'O Mādhava, do not run away [from me].' Three: 'do not [run to] some paltry husband.' These extra readings are only suggested, never stated outright. The verse leaves them hovering under the surface rather than saying them plainly. Do not collapse them into one; all the readings stand together.
उसी 'रागेण' के सहारे एक और छिपा अर्थ भी जताया गया। अक्षरों को अलग तरह तोड़ें तो निकलता है — 'हे माधव, मत दौड़', या 'उस तुच्छ धव (पति) के पीछे मत।' यह वाणी का दूसरा मोड़ है, एक व्यंग्य-अर्थ। पर यह सीधे शब्दों में कहा नहीं गया, केवल संकेत में रखा गया।
vyaṅgya (suggested) is opposed to vācya (directly stated): the pun's second and third senses are deliberately left unstated so the hearer must catch them. This is the śleṣa Jīva says the whole verse turns on.
वाच्य = सीधा कहा हुआ अर्थ; व्यंग्य = श्लेष से सुझाया हुआ छिपा अर्थ। यहाँ छिपा अर्थ कहे बिना ही जता दिया गया।

Viśvanātha explains the messenger's standing. She belongs to Kṛṣṇa's own inner circle, so close she is as good as Kṛṣṇa himself. She can even speak as if she were him. And because the entire errand has been handed over to her, she is a full āpta-dūtī, a trusted go-between.
यहाँ यह दूती कृष्ण के कुल की है, उनसे अभिन्न है। इसी से वह उनकी ओर से 'स्वयं तू' के भाव से बोल सकती है। उसे पूरा कार्य सौंपा गया है — इसलिए वह 'निसृष्टार्था' है। और वह आप्त-दूती है, अर्थात् घनिष्ठ और विश्वस्त।
nisṛṣṭārtha (the messenger given the whole task) and āpta-dūtī (the trusted go-between) are the technical grades of messenger; Viśvanātha shows this speaker qualifies as both.
निसृष्टार्था दूती = जिसे पूरा कार्य सौंप दिया गया हो; आप्त-दूती = घनिष्ठ, भरोसे की दूती।

To back this up, Viśvanātha quotes the Gaṇoddeśa-dīpikā, which lists the go-betweens by name: Vṛndā, Vṛndārikā, Melā, Muralī and others. Their being named as dūtīs there is why this speaker counts as one too.

Viśvanātha finds the same warning Jīva found. The word implies: run to him while he has not yet grown attached to some other girl. In other words, do not delay, delay would be a mistake. The verse sounds this out rather than stating it.
उस 'समूढवयस' शब्द से यह भी सुझाया गया — जब तक वह किसी और में आसक्त न हो जाए, उससे पहले ही दौड़कर पहुँच जाओ। अर्थात् देर करना अनुचित है, यह ध्वनित किया गया।
dhvanita ('made to resound') is the suggested sense; both commentators read samūḍha-vayasa as hinting that Kṛṣṇa's ripe youth makes delay dangerous. Note they land on the same warning by slightly different routes.

'स्त्रियाँ वीर (शूर पति/पुत्र) वाली होती हैं' — इस न्याय से यह प्रकट होता है कि वह अत्यन्त बलवान है। पर्वत उठाने की बात से उसका बल जताया जाता है।
Why cited: the maxim 'vīravatyaḥ striyaḥ' is adduced to show that recalling the Govardhana-lifting reveals Kṛṣṇa's supreme strength, so the heroine is safe in choosing him as her hero.
क्यों उद्धृत: विश्वनाथ इस न्याय (लोकोक्ति) को इसलिए लाते हैं कि 'पर्वत-धारण' के श्लेष से नायक की प्रबलता सिद्ध हो — स्त्री का गौरव उसके वीर से जुड़ा है।

bhaṅgyā tubut by a turn of phrasing instr.; bhaṅgī = a bend/twist of expression, the punning re-reading; tu marks the shiftपरन्तु (वाणी के) मोड़ से — (तृतीया; भङ्गी = कहन का मोड़, श्लेष से नया पाठ; tu मोड़ को चिह्नित करता है)
sa pūrvaṁhe, earlier nom. + adverb 'formerly'वह पहले — (प्रथमा + क्रियाविशेषण 'पहले, पूर्वकाल में')
giriṇā dhṛtenaby the single mountain that he held instr. sing.; the one Govardhana held onceएक पर्वत के द्वारा, जिसे उठाया गया था, उससे — (तृतीया एकवचन; वह गोवर्धन जिसे उसने एक बार उठाया)
kṛta-rakṣaḥ abhūtmade [the cowherds] safe nom.; kṛta-rakṣa 'having done the protecting'; abhūt 'was, became' (past)रक्षा करने वाला बना था — (प्रथमा; कृत-रक्ष 'जिसने रक्षा की'; अभूत् 'हुआ था', भूतकाल)
bhaṅgyā tu — but by a twist of phrasing; sa pūrvaṁ giriṇā dhṛtena — he, formerly, by the one mountain he held up; kṛta-rakṣaḥ abhūt — did the protecting
bhaṅgyā tu — परन्तु वाणी के मोड़ से; sa pūrvaṁ giriṇā dhṛtena kṛta-rakṣaḥ abhūt — वह पहले एक धारण किए पर्वत से रक्षक बना था।
Then Viśvanātha reads the phrase with a playful twist. Long ago he made the people of Vraja safe with a single mountain he held up, Govardhana. That was then, one mountain.
पर वाणी के दूसरे मोड़ से अर्थ बदल जाता है। वह पहले एक ही पर्वत (गोवर्धन) उठाकर रक्षा कर चुका है। तब उसने एक पर्वत से रक्षा की थी।
bhaṅgī is a 'bend' of speech, the licensed twist by which a phrase is re-read for a further, teasing sense. Note the singular here: pūrvam ('earlier') and one mountain, set up to be contrasted with the dual in the next segment.

But today, the messenger jokes, he will keep you safe with two 'mountains.' The twist puns 'giri' onto the heroine's own breasts, pressed to his chest in the embrace. So, she says teasingly: be reassured, and go to meet him. This is narma, flirtatious jesting.
पर आज बात दूसरी है। यहाँ 'गिरि' का श्लेष नायिका के दो स्तनों पर है। अर्थ यह — आज वह दो पर्वतों (स्तनों) से तेरी रक्षा करेगा। इसलिए आश्वस्त होकर अभिसार को जा। यह दूती का नर्म (छेड़-भरा विनोद) है।
narma = flirtatious, teasing wit. The dṛṣṭānta maps this way: 'one mountain earlier' = Govardhana held once to shelter Vraja; 'two mountains today' = the pair of the heroine's breasts in the embrace. The teasing point: as one mountain once made all Vraja safe, so this new pair of 'mountains' will keep her safe now. The pun works only because giri (mountain) doubles for the rounded breasts — it stops being literal beyond that flirtatious mapping.
नर्म = हँसी-मजाक-भरा, छेड़ता हुआ वचन।

mādhavaṁ lakṣmī-kāntam |
mādhavaṁthe verse's word 'mādhava' — pratīka being explained'माधवम्' — (जो पद खोला जा रहा है)
lakṣmī-kāntammeans 'the beloved of Lakṣmī' acc.; mā = Lakṣmī, dhava = husband/lord; so Mā-dhava = Lakṣmī's lordलक्ष्मी के पति को — (द्वितीया; मा = लक्ष्मी, धव = पति/स्वामी; अतः मा-धव = लक्ष्मी के स्वामी)
mādhavaṁ — the verse's 'mādhava'; lakṣmī-kāntam — 'the beloved lord of Lakṣmī' [is what it means]
mādhavaṁ — 'माधवम्' अर्थात्; lakṣmī-kāntam — लक्ष्मी के पति को।
Viśvanātha glosses 'mādhava.' He reads it as 'the beloved of Lakṣmī': 'mā' is Lakṣmī, 'dhava' is her lord. So Mādhava is Lakṣmī's own husband, no mean figure.
'माधवम्' का अर्थ — लक्ष्मी के पति को। यहाँ 'मा' का अर्थ लक्ष्मी और 'धव' का अर्थ पति है। अतः मा-धव अर्थात् लक्ष्मी के स्वामी।
The name is decomposed mā ('Lakṣmī, goddess of fortune') + dhava ('lord, husband'); this dignifies Kṛṣṇa as the equal of Nārāyaṇa, set up by the Garga citation next.

nārāyaṇa-sama iti garga-vākyāt |
nārāyaṇa-samaḥ iti'equal to Nārāyaṇa' nom.; the words quoted from Garga's speech'नारायण-समान (है)' — यह (जो शब्द गर्ग के कथन से उद्धृत हैं)
garga-vākyāton the authority of Garga's statement abl. of source; Garga's naming-ceremony verse in the Bhāgavataगर्ग के वचन से — (पञ्चमी, स्रोत का; भागवत में गर्ग का नामकरण-वचन)
nārāyaṇa-samaḥ iti garga-vākyāt — [he is Lakṣmī's lord] because Garga's statement says [he is] 'equal to Nārāyaṇa'
nārāyaṇa-samaḥ iti — 'नारायण के समान' यह; garga-vākyāt — गर्ग के वचन से।
He backs the 'Lakṣmī's lord' reading with Garga's words that this child is 'equal to Nārāyaṇa.' If he is Nārāyaṇa's equal, then calling him Lakṣmī's husband is exactly fitting.
'नारायण के समान' — यह गर्ग के वचन से लिया गया है। भागवत में गर्ग मुनि ने नामकरण के समय ऐसा कहा था।
Why cited: Garga's line 'nārāyaṇa-samaḥ' is cited to license reading mādhava as 'Lakṣmī's lord' — since Kṛṣṇa equals Nārāyaṇa, he fitly holds Nārāyaṇa's consort's lordship.
क्यों उद्धृत: विश्वनाथ इस गर्ग-वचन को इसलिए लाते हैं कि 'माधव = लक्ष्मी-पति' अर्थ को प्रमाणित करें — कृष्ण को नारायण-सम कहा गया है, इसलिए वे लक्ष्मी के स्वामी हैं।

mā śobhā tasyāḥ patim |
mā'mā' [taken separately] means beauty / radiance the re-split reading of the same syllable; mā here = śobhā, splendor'मा' — (उसी अक्षर का दूसरा पाठ; यहाँ मा = शोभा, सौन्दर्य)
śobhā tasyāḥ patimher — that radiance's — lord gen.; the man who is lord of [all] beauty, i.e. supremely handsomeउस शोभा (सौन्दर्य) के पति को — (षष्ठी; जो समस्त सौन्दर्य का स्वामी है, अर्थात् परम सुन्दर)
mā — beauty, radiance; śobhā tasyāḥ patim — [him who is] the lord of that beauty
mā — 'मा' अर्थात् शोभा; śobhā tasyāḥ patim — उस शोभा के पति को।
Or else Viśvanātha re-splits the same name. Take 'mā' as śobhā, radiant beauty. Then Mādhava is the lord of all beauty, the supremely handsome one. This second reading stands beside the 'Lakṣmī's lord' reading; the verse holds both.
अथवा 'मा' का दूसरा अर्थ शोभा (सौन्दर्य) भी है। तब 'माधव' का अर्थ — शोभा के पति को, अर्थात् जो समस्त सौन्दर्य का स्वामी है, परम सुन्दर है।
A suspended alternative: the same syllables mā-dhava yield either 'Lakṣmī's lord' (s10) or 'lord of [all] beauty / supremely handsome' (here). Do not choose between them; both readings are kept live.

bhaṅgyā tu — but by the teasing twist; he mūḍhe — O foolish girl; tiryaṅ-mukhī kiṁ bhāvayasi — why brood with your face turned aside; mūḍhānāṁ paśu-ādīnām iva vayasā saha vartamānaṁ — like dull beasts who just drift along with age; dhavaṁ svapatiṁ mā ādhāva iti — 'do not run to a mere husband'; kaṭhora-bhāṣitvam — this is her sharp-spoken manner
Finally Viśvanātha gives the twisted, hidden reading of the last line. Re-cut, it scolds: 'O foolish girl, why do you sit brooding with your face turned away? Do not run off to some mere husband, one who just drifts along with his years like a dull beast.' Read this way the messenger speaks harshly, kaṭhora-bhāṣin, to shame the girl out of her sulk. This hidden scolding sits alongside the surface urging; the verse keeps both.
पर वाणी के मोड़ से अर्थ पलट जाता है। 'अरी मूढ़े! तिरछा मुँह किए क्या सोचती रहती है? मूढ़ पशु आदि की तरह जो बस उम्र के साथ पड़ा बूढ़ा होता जा रहा है — ऐसे अपने पति के पीछे मत दौड़।' यह दूती का कठोर-भाषण है।
A suspended alternative and the verse's core śleṣa: the surface says 'run to Mādhava with passion'; the twist (bhaṅgī) says 'do not run to a paltry husband.' Viśvanātha's harsh re-reading matches Jīva's mā dhāva / mā dhavam split — but do not merge the two commentators; each frames the pun in his own words. Keep the two layers, praise and scolding, both live.
कठोर-भाषित्व = कड़ा, तीखा बोलना — नर्म (कोमल छेड़) के विपरीत यह पाठ फटकार-भरा है।
