hriyam avagṛhya gṛhebhyaḥ

The verse — decoded
L1definition
hriyam avagṛhya gṛhebhyaḥ
hriyamher shyness — as the thing carried off accusative object of avagṛhyaलज्जा को (जिसे — कर्म, avagṛhya की क्रिया का विषय)
avagṛhyahaving taken it away gerund; the two commentators split on how — see notesपकड़कर / हटाकर (पूर्वकालिक क्रिया; दोनों टीकाकार इसे भिन्न ढंग से खोलते हैं — देखें टिप्पणी)
gṛhebhyaḥaway from the houses ablative of separationघरों से (अपादान — किससे अलग करके, वहाँ से)
hriyam — her shyness; gṛhebhyaḥ — out from the houses; avagṛhya — having taken away
hriyam — लज्जा को; avagṛhya — पकड़/हटाकर; gṛhebhyaḥ — घरों से।
This is the verse Rūpa quotes to show what a nisṛṣṭārthā messenger is. It describes the flute. First: the flute takes Rādhā's shyness away, drawing it out of the houses.
पहले लज्जा को हटाया जाता है। फिर उसे घरों से बाहर लाया जाता है। यह अगली पंक्ति की क्रिया की भूमिका है।
hrī here is lajjā, the modest reserve that keeps Rādhā at home; the flute's sound removes it. avagṛhya is left open in the verse — the commentators disagree whether it means 'gently carried off' or 'snatched away'.
avagṛhya पर दोनों टीकाकार अलग चलते हैं — जीव 'उपहृत्य' (लाकर/भेंट करके) मानते हैं, विश्वनाथ 'आच्छिद्य' (छीनकर) मानते हैं। यहाँ दोनों पाठ ज्यों-के-त्यों रखे गए हैं, इन्हें मिलाया नहीं गया।
L2definition
karṣati rādhāṁ vanāya yā nipuṇā |
karṣatiit drags, pulls finite verb, 3rd sg.खींच ले जाती है (मुख्य क्रिया, एकवचन — वह ऐसा करती है)
rādhāṁRādhā — whom it pulls accusative objectराधा को (कर्म — जिसे खींच ले जाती है)
vanāyatoward the forest dative of goal/purpose — see Viśvanātha's glossवन के लिए / वन को पहुँचाने के लिए (प्रयोजन का सम्प्रदान — विश्वनाथ इसे 'वन प्राप्त कराने के लिए' खोलते हैं)
she who — relative pronoun, resumed by sā in L3जो (स्त्री — जिसका उत्तर L3 में 'सा' से आता है)
nipuṇābeing expert at it predicate adjective of yāनिपुण, कुशल है (जो का विशेषण — जो इस काम में दक्ष है)
— she who; nipuṇā — being expert; rādhāṁ — Rādhā; vanāya — toward the forest; karṣati — drags
— जो; nipuṇā — निपुण होकर; rādhāṁ — राधा को; vanāya — वन को पहुँचाने के लिए; karṣati — खींच ले जाती है।
And she drags Rādhā off toward the forest. She is expert at exactly this. The 'she who' points ahead to the flute, named in the next lines.
जो स्त्री इसमें निपुण है, वह राधा को खींच ले जाती है। कहाँ? वन की ओर। किसलिए? राधा को वन तक पहुँचाने के लिए।
yā (feminine 'she who') fits vaṁśī, 'the flute', which is feminine — that is why the whole verse can personify the flute as a female messenger.
vanāya यहाँ प्रयोजन का सम्प्रदान (dative) है — 'वन के लिए' यानी 'वन तक पहुँचाने के लिए', ऐसा विश्वनाथ स्पष्ट करते हैं।
L3definition
sā jayati nisṛṣṭārthā
she — that very one demonstrative resuming yā of L2वह (जो — L2 के 'या' का उत्तर, वही स्त्री)
jayatiis supreme, wins the day finite verb; here 'all glory to her'जय हो / सर्वोत्कर्ष से विराजती है (यहाँ 'उसकी जय हो' — वंदना का भाव)
nisṛṣṭārthāas the 'entrusted-with-the-errand' kind of messenger predicate; the technical term this verse illustratesनिसृष्टार्था (जिसे यह श्लोक उदाहरण के रूप में दिखाता है — वह दूती जिसे सारा कार्यभार सौंप दिया गया हो)
— that very one; nisṛṣṭārthā — being the entrusted-with-the-errand messenger; jayati — is supreme / all glory to her
— वह; nisṛṣṭārthā — निसृष्टार्था (दूती); jayati — जयवंत हो।
All glory to her! She is the nisṛṣṭārthā — the messenger who has been handed the whole errand. That title is the point Rūpa is illustrating.
वही स्त्री जयवंत हो। उसका नाम है निसृष्टार्था। यही वह प्रकार है जिसे यह श्लोक उदाहरण देकर समझाता है।
nisṛṣṭārthā literally 'one on whom the matter has been laid down / handed over'; the commentators unpack it as vinyasta-kārya-bhārā, 'the one on whom the load of the task has been placed'.
निसृष्टार्था = वह दूती जिस पर सारा कार्य-भार छोड़ (न्यस्त कर) दिया गया हो; यही इस श्लोक में परिभाषित पारिभाषिक शब्द है।
L4definition
vara-vaṁśaja-kākalī dūtī
vara-vaṁśaja-kākalīwhose sweet warble rises from fine bamboo bahuvrīhi describing dūtī; also puns on 'born of a good lineage'श्रेष्ठ वंश में जन्मी, मधुर कूजनवाली (दूती का बहुव्रीहि विशेषण; साथ ही श्लेष — 'उत्तम बाँस से बनी, मधुर स्वरवाली', यानी वंशी/बाँसुरी)
dūtīthe female messenger the noun the whole verse defines; here = the fluteदूती (जिसे यह पूरा श्लोक परिभाषित करता है; श्लेष से यहाँ = वंशी/बाँसुरी)
vara-vaṁśaja-kākalī — whose sweet warble comes from choice bamboo; dūtī — the female messenger [is she]
vara-vaṁśaja-kākalī — श्रेष्ठ वंश में जन्मी, मधुर स्वरवाली; dūtī — दूती।
This messenger is the flute — her sweet warble comes from choice bamboo. Read as a whole: 'She who expertly takes Rādhā's shyness from the houses and drags her to the forest — all glory to her, the entrusted messenger whose sweet notes rise from fine bamboo.'
वह दूती श्रेष्ठ वंश (कुल) में जन्मी है और उसका बोल मधुर है। यहाँ श्लेष है — 'वंशज' का दूसरा अर्थ है 'बाँस से बना', और 'काकली' है मधुर स्वर। इस दूसरे अर्थ में यह दूती स्वयं वंशी (बाँसुरी) है, जो राधा को वन की ओर खींच लाती है।
vara-vaṁśaja carries a double sense: 'grown from excellent bamboo' (the flute) and 'born of a noble family' (a well-bred messenger). The pun lets a bamboo flute stand in for a courtly dūtī.

upahṛtyameans 'having gently carried it off' gloss-word'उपहृत्य' — लाकर / भेंट करके, यही उसका अर्थ (यही जीव का पर्याय-पद)
ity arthaḥthat is the sense closing formulaऐसा अर्थ है (समापन-सूत्र)
avagṛhya — the verse's 'avagṛhya'; upahṛtya — 'having carried off' [is what it means]; ity arthaḥ — that is the sense
avagṛhya — 'अवगृह्य'; upahṛtya — 'उपहृत्य' (लाकर); ity arthaḥ — ऐसा अर्थ है।
Jīva glosses the verb 'avagṛhya'. He reads it as upahṛtya — 'having carried it off.' So the flute gently carries Rādhā's shyness away.
जीव गोस्वामी 'अवगृह्य' को 'उपहृत्य' से खोलते हैं। यानी 'लाकर / भेंट करके'। लज्जा को हटाना नहीं, बल्कि (राधा को) लाकर प्रस्तुत करना — ऐसा भाव।
Compare Viśvanātha below, who glosses the same word as ācchidya, 'having snatched away.' Jīva's upahṛtya is the softer reading; hold both — they are not the same picture.

nisṛṣṭārthā vinyasta-kārya-bhārā ||
nisṛṣṭārthāthe verse's word 'nisṛṣṭārthā' — pratīka being explained'निसृष्टार्था' (श्लोक का जो पद यहाँ समझाया जा रहा है)
vinyasta-kārya-bhārāmeans 'the one on whom the whole load of the task has been placed' gloss compound; bahuvrīhiजिस पर कार्य का सारा भार सौंप दिया गया हो (बहुव्रीहि — वही उसका अर्थ)
nisṛṣṭārthā — the verse's 'nisṛṣṭārthā'; vinyasta-kārya-bhārā — 'she on whom the load of the task is laid' [is what it means]
nisṛṣṭārthā — 'निसृष्टार्था'; vinyasta-kārya-bhārā — जिस पर कार्य का सारा भार न्यस्त (सौंपा हुआ) हो।
Now Jīva glosses nisṛṣṭārthā. It means vinyasta-kārya-bhārā — the one on whom the entire load of the errand has been laid. She is trusted to run the whole thing herself.
जीव 'निसृष्टार्था' का अर्थ बताते हैं — जिस पर पूरे कार्य का भार डाल दिया गया हो। ऐसी दूती अपने-आप निर्णय लेकर काम पूरा करती है।
This is the defining trait of the nisṛṣṭārthā type of dūtī: the sender hands over the full task, not just a message. Viśvanātha gives word-for-word the same gloss below.

hriyam iti — [the verse beginning] 'hriyam…' [is now taken up]
hriyam iti — 'ह्रियम्' इत्यादि (इस श्लोक को लेकर)।
Viśvanātha opens by quoting the verse's first word, 'hriyam.' This is just his way of saying 'now, on this verse.'
विश्वनाथ श्लोक के पहले शब्द 'ह्रियम्' से उसे उठाते हैं। इसी से आगे की व्याख्या शुरू होती है।
Quoting the opening word (pratīka) is the standard commentarial way to flag which verse is being commented on.

gārgī-vākyam — [the verse] is the speech of Gārgī
gārgī-vākyam — (यह) गार्गी का वचन है।
Viśvanātha tells us who is speaking these lines: Gārgī. In the play, she is the one praising the flute.
विश्वनाथ बताते हैं कि यह श्लोक किसने कहा। यह गार्गी का कथन है।
Gārgī is a character in the Lalita-mādhava; naming the speaker fixes the dramatic context of the praise.

avagṛhya ācchidya |
avagṛhyathe verse's word 'avagṛhya' — pratīka being explained'अवगृह्य' (श्लोक का जो पद यहाँ समझाया जा रहा है)
ācchidyameans 'having snatched it away' gloss-word'आच्छिद्य' — छीनकर / बलपूर्वक हटाकर (यही विश्वनाथ का पर्याय-पद)
avagṛhya — the verse's 'avagṛhya'; ācchidya — 'having snatched away' [is what it means]
avagṛhya — 'अवगृह्य'; ācchidya — 'आच्छिद्य' (छीनकर)।
Viśvanātha glosses 'avagṛhya' too. He reads it as ācchidya — 'having snatched away.' On his reading the flute seizes Rādhā's shyness by force.
विश्वनाथ 'अवगृह्य' को 'आच्छिद्य' से खोलते हैं। यानी 'छीनकर, बलपूर्वक हटाकर'। यहाँ लज्जा को छीन-हटाकर राधा को घरों से बाहर खींचा जाता है। यह जीव के 'उपहृत्य' (लाकर) से भिन्न है।
Set this against Jīva's upahṛtya, 'gently carried off,' just above. Same verb, two pictures — a forceful snatching versus a gentle carrying. Keep both; do not merge them.
s4gloss
vanāya vanaṁ prāpayitum |
vanāyathe verse's word 'vanāya' — pratīka being explained'वनाय' (श्लोक का जो पद यहाँ समझाया जा रहा है)
vanaṁ prāpayitummeans 'in order to bring her to the forest' infinitive; unpacks the dative as a dative of purposeवन को पहुँचाने के लिए (तुमुन्-प्रत्यय; सम्प्रदान को प्रयोजन के अर्थ में खोलता है — इसलिए वह ऐसा करती है)
vanāya — the verse's 'vanāya'; vanaṁ prāpayitum — 'in order to make her reach the forest' [is what it means]
vanāya — 'वनाय'; vanaṁ prāpayitum — वन तक पहुँचाने के लिए।
He glosses 'vanāya' as well. The dative here is a dative of purpose: 'in order to bring her to the forest.' So the flute drags Rādhā precisely so as to get her to the woods.
विश्वनाथ 'वनाय' का अर्थ खोलते हैं। यह 'वन के लिए' नहीं, 'वन तक पहुँचाने के लिए' है। इस प्रकार सम्प्रदान (dative) को वे प्रयोजन के अर्थ में लेते हैं।
Reading the dative vanāya as 'in order to reach the forest' turns a plain 'to the forest' into a statement of the flute's aim — the tryst in the woods.

nisṛṣṭārthā vinyasta-kārya-bhārā ||
nisṛṣṭārthāthe verse's word 'nisṛṣṭārthā' — pratīka being explained'निसृष्टार्था' (श्लोक का जो पद यहाँ समझाया जा रहा है)
vinyasta-kārya-bhārāmeans 'the one on whom the whole load of the task has been placed' gloss compound; bahuvrīhiजिस पर कार्य का सारा भार सौंप दिया गया हो (बहुव्रीहि — वही उसका अर्थ)
nisṛṣṭārthā — the verse's 'nisṛṣṭārthā'; vinyasta-kārya-bhārā — 'she on whom the load of the task is laid' [is what it means]
nisṛṣṭārthā — 'निसृष्टार्था'; vinyasta-kārya-bhārā — जिस पर कार्य का सारा भार न्यस्त (सौंपा हुआ) हो।
Viśvanātha closes with nisṛṣṭārthā, glossing it exactly as Jīva did: vinyasta-kārya-bhārā, the one on whom the full load of the errand is laid. Both ācāryas land on the same definition of this messenger-type.
विश्वनाथ भी 'निसृष्टार्था' का वही अर्थ देते हैं — जिस पर पूरे कार्य का भार सौंप दिया गया हो। इस पद पर दोनों टीकाकार एकमत हैं, यद्यपि 'अवगृह्य' पर वे अलग-अलग चलते हैं।
The two commentators diverged on avagṛhya but agree word-for-word here: the nisṛṣṭārthā is defined by being entrusted with the entire task.
