There are women by whom Kṛṣṇa is, so to speak, licked all over. They do it with a sidelong glance thrown from the corner of the eye. And they do it restlessly, hungrily.
जिन गोपियों के द्वारा कृष्ण चखे जाते हैं। वे तिरछी दृष्टि के कोर से ऐसा करती हैं। और वह भी चंचल भाव से। यहाँ कृष्ण को कंस-शत्रु कहकर पुकारा है। 'जिनके द्वारा' — यह सम्बन्ध अभी अधूरा है; इसका उत्तर (ये गोपियाँ) चौथी पंक्ति में आएगा।
ālihyate, "is licked," is deliberately bold: the eyes taste him the way a tongue tastes. It sets the sensuous key of the whole verse.

adhara-sīdhu, "lip-wine," makes the kiss a draught of liquor; sīdhu is a specific sugarcane wine, chosen for the intoxication it names.

sakhe — हे सखे; kiṁ jānāsi — क्या तू जानता है; ābhiḥ gopībhiḥ — इन गोपियों के द्वारा; katarat tapaḥ — कौन-सा तप; vyadhāyi — किया गया।
Tell me, friend — do you know? Which austerity did these gopīs perform to earn all this? What penance, out of every penance there is, won them such fortune?
हे सखे! क्या तू जानता है? इन गोपियों ने कौन-सा तप किया होगा? अब पहली पंक्ति का 'जिनके द्वारा' पूरा होता है — 'इन गोपियों के द्वारा'। यही वे हैं जो कृष्ण को इस प्रकार आस्वादित करती हैं। तप अनेक हैं; इसलिए पूछा — कौन-सा तप किया?
The whole verse is one long relative clause (yābhiḥ … ālihyate … pariṣvajyate … āsvādyate) resolved only here by ābhiḥ gopībhiḥ — "these gopīs, by whom all that is done." The speaker envies them and cannot guess what earned them the gift.
कतरत् = अनेक विकल्पों में से 'कौन-सा'। इसीलिए 'द्विधा' या 'बहुधा' तपों की ओर संकेत है।

Now the "yābhiḥ…" verse.
'याभिः' — इस पद से आरम्भ होने वाला श्लोक। जीव गोस्वामी उसी को उद्धृत करके व्याख्या आरम्भ करते हैं।
iti after an opening word is the standard way a commentator points to "the verse beginning thus" before commenting.
प्रतीक = व्याख्या के लिए मूल का आरम्भिक पद उद्धृत करना।

tat-spṛhāa craving for it for oneself — a longing to have that union oneselfउसकी (अपने लिए) चाह/स्पृहा

tat — that [union]; anumodanam eva — is only rejoicing-along; na tu — and not; tat-spṛhā — a craving for it oneself; sakhī-bhāvāt eva — precisely because of the friend-mood.
tat — वह; anumodanam eva — केवल अनुमोदन ही है; na tu tat-spṛhā — उसकी अपने लिए चाह नहीं; sakhī-bhāvāt eva — क्योंकि यह केवल सखी-भाव से है।
What the speaker feels here is only shared joy. He rejoices that the gopīs get this. He is not craving that union for himself. And the reason is the sakhī-bhāva — the mood of a girlfriend, who delights in her friend's love and wants nothing for herself.
जीव गोस्वामी का पाठ यह है — वह जो कहा गया, केवल अनुमोदन ही है। अर्थात् गोपियाँ स्वामिनी के उस सुख में केवल अनुमति देती हैं, प्रसन्न होती हैं। परन्तु अपने लिए वैसी चाह नहीं। यह केवल सखी-भाव के कारण है — इससे अधिक कुछ नहीं।
sakhī-bhāva: the emotional stance of a female friend (sakhī) of the heroine. Its defining feature is that she finds her whole happiness in her friend's union with Kṛṣṇa and seeks no such union of her own. Jīva reads the envious-sounding "which austerity did they perform?" as pure fellow-feeling, not self-desire.
अनुमोदन = किसी और के भोग में सम्मति देकर सुखी होना। स्पृहा = अपने लिए वैसी उत्कट चाह। जीव यहाँ स्पृहा का स्पष्ट निषेध करते हैं।

sakhī-bhāvaṁ samāśritya iti"having taken shelter of the friend-mood" — [the words] "resting on the sakhī-bhāva" pratīka: Viśvanātha cites the phrase from the definition (the priya-narma-sakha speaks "resting on sakhī-bhāva") that this verse illustrates'सखी-भाव का आश्रय लेकर' इत्यादि — विश्वनाथ लक्षण के उस पद को उद्धृत करते हैं (प्रिय-नर्म-सखा 'सखी-भाव का आश्रय लेकर' बोलता है) जिसका यह श्लोक उदाहरण है
atra — here; sakhī-bhāvaṁ samāśritya iti — "resting on the friend-mood," [that phrase].
atra — यहाँ; sakhī-bhāvaṁ samāśritya iti — 'सखी-भाव का आश्रय लेकर' (यह लक्षण-पद)।
Here he picks up the phrase "resting on the sakhī-bhāva." That is the phrase from the rule this verse is meant to illustrate.
विश्वनाथ यहाँ लक्षण का वह पद उठाते हैं — 'सखी-भाव का आश्रय लेकर'। यही वह लक्षण है जिसका यह श्लोक उदाहरण है। प्रिय-नर्म-सखा सखी-भाव का आश्रय लेकर बोलता है — इसी को अब समझाया जाएगा।
Viśvanātha frames verse 2.15 as the example of the earlier definition, where the priya-narma-sakha's speech is said to rest on the mood of the girlfriend (sakhī-bhāva).

Granted, the sakhīs are happy through the joy of their own group-queen — Rādhā, or whoever leads their troop — being united with Kṛṣṇa. Their happiness comes from the queen's union, not from any union of their own.

The pivot is subtle. ati-lobhanīya-gātryaḥ means "whose limbs are intensely craved." With śrī-kṛṣṇasya (gen.), Kṛṣṇa is the one who craves them; with tasya it reads the other way — the sense of who desires whom turns on the genitive. The two-kinds distinction organizes the rest of the comment.
गात्री = 'जिसका गात्र (शरीर) ऐसा है'। पहले प्रकार में 'कृष्णस्य लोभनीय' (कृष्ण के लिए लोभनीय), दूसरे में 'तस्य लोभनीय' — दिशा पलट जाती है। यह विश्वनाथ का दो-प्रकार-सखी सिद्धान्त है, जिसे जीव के अनुमोदन-मार्ग से मिलाना नहीं है।

tāḥ ca — and these; kastūryādayaḥ nitya-sakhyaḥ — are Kastūrī and the rest, the eternal sakhīs; tatra — here; pūrvāsāṁ vyākhyāta-lakṣaṇaṁ śrī-kṛṣṇāṅga-saṅga-spṛhā-rūpam aṁśam — the defined trait of the first kind, the aspect consisting of longing for union with Kṛṣṇa's body; udāhartum — in order to illustrate; āha yathā vā iti — he says, "yathā vā —."
The second kind are Kastūrī and the rest — the nitya-sakhīs, the eternal girlfriends. Now, to give an example of just one aspect of the first kind — the aspect where they long for union with Kṛṣṇa's body — Rūpa Gosvāmī says, "yathā vā —," and gives this verse.
nitya-sakhī: the "eternal girlfriend," a grade of sakhī (Kastūrī is the type) who never desires union with Kṛṣṇa for herself. The verse illustrates only the craving that belongs to the first kind (Lalitā's sort), not the second. "yathā vā" = "or, as a further example" — the lead-in printed above verse 2.15.
नित्य-सखी = सदा साथ रहने वाली सखी का एक भेद (कस्तूरी आदि)। व्याख्यात-लक्षण = प्रिय-नर्म-सखा के लक्षण में जो 'सखी-भाव का आश्रय' कहा गया, वही।

subalaṁ prati ujjvalasya sābhilāṣoktiḥ |
subalaṁ pratiaddressed to Subala — spoken toward Subala prati = "in the direction of, to"; Subala is the friend called sakhe in L4सुबल की ओर, सुबल से — 'प्रति' = 'की ओर, के प्रति'; L4 में जिसे 'सखे' कहा, वह सुबल है

sābhilāṣā uktiḥa speech full of longing — words spoken with desire sa-abhilāṣā = "with longing"अभिलाषा से युक्त वचन — स-अभिलाषा = 'चाह से भरा हुआ'
subalaṁ prati — to Subala; ujjvalasya — by Ujjvala; sābhilāṣā uktiḥ — a speech full of longing.
subalaṁ prati — सुबल की ओर; ujjvalasya — उज्ज्वल का; sābhilāṣā uktiḥ — अभिलाषा से भरा वचन।
This is Ujjvala speaking to Subala. And it is a speech full of longing.
यह वचन उज्ज्वल (नायक) का है। वह सुबल से कह रहा है। और यह वचन अभिलाषा से भरा है — चाह से युक्त है। इसीलिए विश्वनाथ इसे 'साभिलाष उक्ति' कहते हैं।
Viśvanātha names the two friends: Ujjvala is the speaker, Subala the "sakhe" of the verse. Reading the utterance as "full of longing" (sābhilāṣā) fits his first-kind sakhī doctrine — where his own commentary allows longing — unlike Jīva (s2), who denied any craving. The commentators are left unharmonized.
साभिलाष = अभिलाषा (चाह) सहित। विश्वनाथ यहाँ स्पष्ट रूप से इसे चाह-भरा वचन कहते हैं — यह जीव के 'न तु तत्-स्पृहा' (चाह नहीं) से भिन्न पाठ है; दोनों को मिलाना नहीं।

kucopapīḍam — 'कुचोपपीडम्'; kucābhyām upapīḍya — दोनों स्तनों से दबाकर।
The word kucopapīḍam in line two he unpacks. It means: having pressed him hard with both breasts.
मूल का पद 'कुचोपपीडम्' विश्वनाथ खोलते हैं। इसका अर्थ है — दोनों स्तनों से दबाकर। अर्थात् समास को वे 'कुचाभ्याम् उपपीड्य' करके स्पष्ट करते हैं।
उपपीड्य = दबाकर (ल्यप् प्रत्यय)। विश्वनाथ यहाँ केवल व्याकरण खोलते हैं — क्रियाविशेषण समास को क्रिया-वाक्य में बदलकर।
