The scene opens in a lovers' quarrel. In the midst of the play, the gopī takes offense and walks off. Subala goes after her. He softens her, wins her over, and brings her back to Kṛṣṇa.
प्रेम की क्रीड़ा में गोपी रूठकर चल देती है। सुबल उसे मनाता है, प्रसन्न करता है। फिर उसे लौटा लाता है।
kali here is the lovers' tiff (praṇaya-kalaha), the sulk that interrupts the play — not "the age of Kali"; the whole scene is intimate love-play, not conflict.
कलि यहाँ प्रेमियों की मान-भरी लड़ाई, रूठना — कोई साधारण झगड़ा नहीं।

The second service. In the bower, their secret grove-chamber, Subala prepares the bed. It is a bed made ready for love, laid out for Kṛṣṇa's play with the gopī.
एकांत कुंज ही उनका कक्ष है। वहाँ सुबल कृष्ण के लिए शय्या बनाता है। यह शय्या प्रेम-केलि के अनुरूप सजी होती है।
agha-bhid, "splitter of Agha," names Kṛṣṇa by the killing of the demon Agha; kandarpa is Kāma (the god of love), so kandarpa-līlā is love-making, and the bed is prepared "fit" for it.
अघ-भिद् = 'अघ (अघासुर) को चीरनेवाला' — कृष्ण का एक नाम। कंदर्प = कामदेव, यहाँ प्रेम-अभिलाषा।

The third service, the most intimate. Kṛṣṇa lies on the breast of his beloved, his limbs loosened and his body damp with sweat from the love-play. And Subala stands and fans him, briskly, to cool him.
कृष्ण प्रिया के वक्ष पर लेटे हैं। प्रेम के बाद उनके अंग शिथिल हो गए हैं, वे पसीने से भीगे हैं। सुबल उन्हें ज़ोर-ज़ोर से पंखा झलता है।
This is the line Jīva singles out. "He fans the sweating one" is offered as the peak of the sequence — the confidant serving even in the most private aftermath of the union.

adhikāritāṁthe fitness [for it], the qualification acc.; adhikāra = the standing/entitlement to a duty, -tā = the state of itअधिकार को — इस सेवा का पात्र होने की योग्यता को
na … vindatidoes [he] not attain? na negates, vindati = √vid, finds/gets; with kva the sense is "where is he not the one who has it?" i.e. no one matches himनहीं पाता — 'कहाँ' के साथ अर्थ यह है कि उसके समान कोई नहीं
subalaḥSubala nom.; the named friendसुबल — यही वह सखा (कर्ता)
sevā-vidhauin the doing of [this] service loc.; sevā = service, vidhi = the rite/manner/act of itसेवा की विधि में — इस सेवा के आचरण में
sevā-vidhau — in this service; adhikāritāṁ — the fitness for it; śrīmān subalaḥ — the blessed Subala; kva na vindati — where does he not attain it? [i.e. who else could?]
sevā-vidhau — सेवा की विधि में; adhikāritāṁ — अधिकार (पात्रता) को; śrīmān subalaḥ — श्रीमान् सुबल; kva na vindati — कहाँ नहीं पाता? (अर्थात् सर्वत्र पाता है, उसके समान कोई नहीं)।
Now the closing wonder. Who else is fit for a service like this? Where would you find such a servant? The blessed Subala alone holds the qualification for it. The rhetorical question is really praise: no one matches him.
ऐसी सेवा का अधिकारी और कौन है? श्रीमान् सुबल के समान कोई नहीं। इस सेवा में उसकी बराबरी कोई नहीं कर सकता।
adhikāritā is the "fitness" or standing to perform a duty — one must be qualified for it. The line asks where such a qualified one could be found, and the answer built into it is: only Subala.
'कहाँ … नहीं पाता' — 'क्व' के साथ निषेध का यह प्रयोग प्रशंसा जताता है : कहीं भी उससे बढ़कर कोई नहीं।

svinnaṁ vījayatīty udāttālaṅkāra evāyam |
svinnaṁ vījayati itithe phrase "he fans the sweating one" iti quotes the mūla words Jīva is picking out from L3'स्विन्नं वीजयति' — मूल (L3) के जिन शब्दों को जीव उठा रहे हैं
udātta-alaṅkāraḥis the "udātta" figure of speech, the figure of magnification nom. predicate; udātta = elevated/exalted, alaṅkāra = a poetic figureउदात्त-अलंकार है — यह एक उन्नत काव्यालंकार है
evaprecisely, none other than restrictive particle — it is exactly this figure and no otherही — ठीक यही अलंकार है, और कोई नहीं
ayamthis [here, in our verse] nom.; points to the case at handयह (प्रस्तुत) स्थल
svinnaṁ vījayati iti — the words "he fans the sweating one"; ayam — this instance; udātta-alaṅkāraḥ eva — is precisely the udātta figure.
svinnaṁ vījayati iti — 'स्विन्नं वीजयति' यह जो (कहा गया); ayam — यह स्थल; udātta-alaṅkāraḥ eva — उदात्त-अलंकार ही है।
Jīva stops on one phrase, "he fans the sweating one." He names it: this is a specific poetic figure, the udātta-alaṅkāra, the figure of magnification. And he says it is exactly that figure, nothing less.
'स्विन्नं वीजयति' वाला यह स्थल उदात्त-अलंकार ही है। और कोई अलंकार यहाँ नहीं।
udātta-alaṅkāra is a named ornament in Sanskrit poetics ("the exalted / magnifying figure") — it works by suggesting how far something exceeds the ordinary. Jīva flags the mūla's own words as an instance of it.
उदात्त-अलंकार = एक ऊँचा, महिमा-सूचक काव्यालंकार, जो किसी वस्तु की उत्कृष्टता को ध्वनित करता है।

vāca-artha-asambhave apieven where the literal sense is impossible loc. of circumstance; vāc-artha = the spoken/literal meaning, asambhava = its impossibility, api = even; concessiveयद्यपि शब्द का सीधा अर्थ सम्भव न हो, तब भी — यह छूट देनेवाला भाव है
vastu-atiśaya-mātra-vyañjakaḥis a mere suggester of a thing's extremity, hinting only at how far the matter exceeds nom. predicate, bahuvrīhi; vastu = the thing, atiśaya = surpassing/excess, mātra = only, vyañjaka = that which suggestsजो केवल वस्तु की उत्कृष्टता को ध्वनित करता है — ऐसा (अलंकार)
kvacitin some places, now and then adv.; not always — only sometimesकहीं-कहीं — सदा नहीं, कभी-कभी
dṛśyateis seen [to work] pass. pres.; "is found, is observed"देखा जाता है, पाया जाता है
saḥ ca — and that figure; vāca-artha-asambhave api — even when its literal sense cannot hold; vastu-atiśaya-mātra-vyañjakaḥ — [becomes] a pure suggester of the thing's excess; kvacit dṛśyate — is found so in some cases.
saḥ ca — और वह (उदात्त-अलंकार); vāca-artha-asambhave api — शब्द का सीधा अर्थ सम्भव न होने पर भी; vastu-atiśaya-mātra-vyañjakaḥ — केवल वस्तु की अतिशयता का ध्वनि-मात्र करनेवाला; kvacit dṛśyate — कहीं-कहीं देखा जाता है।
Jīva now explains how the figure works. Sometimes the words cannot be taken literally at all. Even then, the figure still does its job. It simply suggests how far the thing goes, its sheer excess. That is all it conveys, and you find it working this way here and there.
यह उदात्त-अलंकार कभी-कभी ऐसा भी मिलता है। जहाँ शब्द का सीधा अर्थ बन ही नहीं पाता, वहाँ भी वह केवल वस्तु की उत्कृष्टता को ध्वनित कर देता है।
The point is that udātta can carry meaning by pure suggestion (vyañjanā): when the plain sense breaks down, the figure still communicates the extremity of the matter.
व्यञ्जक = जो सीधे न कहकर ध्वनित करे। वाच्यार्थ = शब्द का सीधा, कहा हुआ अर्थ।

tad aśruṇi nadī jātā"in those tears a river was born" the quoted line; tad = those, aśru = tears (loc.), nadī = a river, jātā = came to be'उन आँसुओं में एक नदी बन गई' — उद्धृत पंक्ति

yathā — जैसे; tad aśruṇi nadī jātā — 'उन आँसुओं में नदी बन गई'; iti ādau — इत्यादि स्थलों में।
Jīva gives an example of the same figure. Someone says, "in her tears a whole river was born." Literally impossible, of course; tears are not a river. But the figure suggests the sheer flood of her weeping. The line before us works the same way.
जैसे 'उन आँसुओं में एक नदी बन गई' — इत्यादि स्थलों में यह अलंकार दिखता है।
Why cited: Adduced as a parallel where the literal sense fails yet the udātta figure still conveys the thing's sheer extremity — the same mechanism Jīva claims for "svinnaṁ vījayati."
क्यों उद्धृत: जीव इसे इसलिए उद्धृत करते हैं कि उदात्त-अलंकार का वह प्रकार दिखा सकें जहाँ शब्द का सीधा अर्थ असम्भव हो, फिर भी अतिशयता ध्वनित हो — आँसुओं का सचमुच नदी बनना असम्भव, पर वह भाव की अतिशयता को ध्वनित करता है।
The example is chosen because its literal sense is plainly impossible, so it shows the udātta figure operating by pure suggestion of excess.

Jīva closes with a textual note. There is a variant reading of this line floating about, "then the dear one ceaselessly fans this sweating one in secret." Jīva rules on it. That reading is not Rūpa's own. It did not come from the author. So we keep the received text.
एक और पाठ भी चलता है — 'ततः शश्वद् वीजयति प्रैयान् विततया स्विन्नांगम् एतं रहः'। पर यह पाठ रूप गोस्वामी का अपना रचा हुआ नहीं है।
pāṭha-antara = a variant reading in the manuscript tradition; mūla-kṛta = belonging to the author's original. Jīva is doing text-criticism: rejecting the variant as non-authorial.

pratyeti — "[he] brings back" [glossing the verse's pratyāvartayati].
pratyeti — (प्रत्यावर्तयति =) लौट आता है / लौटा लाता है।
Viśvanātha begins with a quick word-gloss. The verse's long verb, pratyāvartayati, he simply resolves as pratyeti, "he brings back." A plain paraphrase of the opening word.
'प्रत्यावर्तयति' का अर्थ है — लौटा लाता है।
A padagloss: Viśvanātha replaces the causative pratyāvartayati with the simpler pratyeti to fix its sense before moving on.
