Now the verse defines one type of the hero's companion. Take a friend who, in his own good qualities, comes very close to the hero himself. He is not quite the hero's equal, but nearly so. And out of love he keeps falling in with the hero's wishes, going along with whatever he does.
यह पीठमर्द का लक्षण है। जो अपने गुणों में नायक के प्रायः बराबर हो। नायक जैसा ही, पर उससे थोड़ा-सा कम। और जो प्रेमवश नायक की इच्छा के अनुसार चलता रहे। उसके मन के अनुकूल बरते। ऐसा साथी पीठमर्द कहलाता है।
nāyaka-kalpaḥ: the suffix -kalpa means 'almost, all but' (as in mṛta-kalpaḥ, 'as good as dead'). It fixes this companion's rank precisely — he is close to the hero in quality but deliberately just below him, never an equal or a rival.
'कल्प' प्रत्यय का अर्थ है 'लगभग, प्रायः, थोड़ा कम'। अतः 'नायक-कल्प' अर्थात् नायक के समान, पर पूर्णतः नायक नहीं — उससे किंचित् न्यून। 'अनुवृत्ति' अर्थात् दूसरे के मन के अनुकूल चलना।

Such a companion is given the name pīṭha-marda. That is what the authorities call him. For an example, take Hari — that is, Kṛṣṇa. His pīṭha-marda is Śrīdāmā. So Śrīdāmā stands as the model of this type: a cowherd friend nearly Kṛṣṇa's equal in quality, who out of love always goes along with him.

pīṭha-marda: a term Rūpa Gosvāmī takes from Sanskrit dramaturgy (Nāṭya-śāstra), where it names the hero's chief male sidekick — a competent friend who is slightly the hero's inferior. Literally something like 'one who crushes the seat', i.e. an accomplished man in his own right, yet placed a step below. Here Rūpa fits that dramatic role onto Kṛṣṇa's cowherd friend Śrīdāmā.
'हरेः' षष्ठी विभक्ति है — 'हरि का पीठमर्द', अर्थात् जिसका पीठमर्द वह है, वह हरि (कृष्ण) हैं।
