bhojane lolaḥ satṛṣṇaḥ|
bhojane lolaḥ'greedy about eating' means‘भोजन में लोल’ का अर्थ —
satṛṣṇaḥhe is full of cravingतृष्णा से भरा, लालच वाला
bhojane lolaḥ — 'greedy about eating' (L1) means; satṛṣṇaḥ — full of craving
bhojane lolaḥ — भोजन में लोल का अर्थ है; satṛṣṇaḥ — तृष्णावान, लोभी।
When the verse says the jester is lola about food, Jīva glosses: it means he is full of craving — hungry, always after a meal.
‘भोजन में लोल’ का अर्थ जीव गोस्वामी बताते हैं। इसका अर्थ है — भोजन का लोभी।
lola can mean 'fickle/rolling' or 'greedy/craving'; Jīva fixes the sense here as satṛṣṇa, 'craving.'

vimānaṁ — vimāna; divya-ratha-rūpaṁ — in the form of a heavenly chariot; pakṣe — on the other reading; vigatamānam — one whose pride is gone
vimānaṁ — विमान का अर्थ; divya-ratha-rūpaṁ — दिव्य रथ रूप; pakṣe — दूसरे पक्ष में; vigatamānam — अभिमान से रहित।
vimāna, Jīva says, is a heavenly chariot. And on the second reading it splits into vi-gata-māna, 'the one whose pride is gone.' The single word carries both at once.
‘विमान’ शब्द के दो अर्थ हैं। एक अर्थ है — दिव्य रथ। दूसरे पक्ष में इसका विच्छेद vi-gata-māna होता है, जिसका अर्थ है — अभिमान से रहित।
pakṣe ('on the [other] side/reading') is the standard marker a commentator uses to open the second limb of a śleṣa.
श्लेष यहाँ पद-विच्छेद पर टिका है: vimāna को ‘vi-māna’ (उड़ने वाला रथ) और ‘vigata-māna’ (गया हुआ मान) दोनों तरह पढ़ा जाता है।

Jīva names the figure: 'that is no wonder, among the rāgin' is arthāntara-nyāsa — a general truth capping the particular case. And the word rāgin does its work only through a pun; the maxim is 'pun-rooted.'
यहाँ ‘वह रागियों में आश्चर्य नहीं’ इस वाक्य में अर्थान्तरन्यास अलंकार है। और ‘रागिषु’ शब्द का अर्थ श्लेष पर टिका है। यह नियम तभी सही बैठता है जब ‘राग’ के दो अर्थ लिए जाएँ।
arthāntara-nyāsa: capping a specific point with a general rule. Jīva's added point: the rule here lands only because rāgin means several things at once (śleṣa-mūla, 'rooted in the pun').
अर्थान्तरन्यास = किसी विशेष बात को किसी सामान्य नियम (या उलटे) से समर्थित करने वाला अलंकार।

Jīva proves the pun from the dictionary. The Viśva-prakāśa lists rāga as affection, jealousy, distress, red, and so on. Since it grants both 'jealous' and 'red,' the word rāgin can point at once to the red lip and to a jealous person. The lip is red; jealousy will not move — both senses are live.
‘राग’ शब्द के कई अर्थ हैं। विश्वप्रकाश कोश में कहा है — राग अनुराग, मात्सर्य, क्लेश आदि और लाल आदि रंगों में आता है। उस कोश ने मात्सर्य और लाल — दोनों अर्थ माने हैं। इसलिए ‘रागी’ पद ‘लाल अधर’ में भी और ‘मात्सर्य वाले’ अर्थ में भी लागू होता है।

Viśvanātha reads it straight through. 'O proud one, though I keep begging your lip with all my longing, it will not do what I want — and that is no wonder among the rāgin.' He too names the figure: arthāntara-nyāsa. And he fixes rāgin here as 'the jealous.'
विश्वनाथ अर्थ खोलते हैं — हे मानिनी, इस तरह मनोरथ से मैं तुझ से याचना करता रहा, फिर भी तेरा अधर मेरी चाही हुई मुस्कान देने का यत्न नहीं करता। पर यह अचरज नहीं। क्योंकि जो मात्सर्य वाले हैं, उनमें ऐसा होता ही है। यही अर्थान्तरन्यास अलंकार है।
Viśvanātha resolves rāgiṣu as matsara, 'the jealous' — the same maxim, but he leans the pun toward jealousy, which sets up his next line.

Why call the lip jealous? Because — Viśvanātha's aside — it is by keeping the lip's company that you yourself, O heroine, have caught its jealousy and turned sulky. The reproach folds back on her.
इसका भाव यह है। उसी अधर की संगति से तू भी मात्सर्य वाली मानिनी बन गई है। यानी अधर का मात्सर्य तुझ में भी आ गया।
bhāva ('the drift/inner sense') marks the commentator's unpacking of the implied jab: her own sulk is 'infection' from the jealous lip.

He backs the 'jealous' sense with the same dictionary Jīva used. The Viśva-prakāśa gives rāga as affection, jealousy, distress, red, and so on — so 'jealous' is a licensed reading of rāgin.

Viśvanātha grounds that reading in grammar. The root man can mean 'to know'; add the suffix ghañ and you get māna in the sense of 'knowing.' So vi-māna can honestly mean 'full of knowledge.'

The single verb carries all three senses of vimāna at once: Kṛṣṇa mounts the chariot / the sense-delighting jester / the knowledgeable one.

asmin karmaṇi — इस कार्य में; sāhāyya-artham — सहायता के लिए; avalambamānaḥ — सहारा लेता हुआ; ity arthaḥ — ऐसा अर्थ है।
'Has mounted' here means: for this very job — breaking the heroine's sulk — Kṛṣṇa is leaning on me, the jester, for help. He has 'boarded' me the way one relies on an ally.
‘आरूढ़’ का अर्थ है — इस काम में सहारा लेता हुआ। यानी मान भंग के इस काम में कृष्ण सहायता के लिए विदूषक का आश्रय लेता है।
Ties the whole vimāna image back to the chapter's theme: the vidūṣaka is the nāyaka-sahāya, the hero's helper, whom Kṛṣṇa 'mounts,' i.e. depends on for the task.

Or else — a second, wholly separate reading, which Viśvanātha leaves standing beside the first. To make the heroine laugh, Madhumaṅgala literally comes up carrying Kṛṣṇa on his back, and speaks the verse in that comic posture. Here 'mounted' is taken at face value: the jester really is the vehicle.
अथवा दूसरा पाठ यह है। विदूषक राधा को हँसाने के लिए, कृष्ण को सचमुच अपनी पीठ पर उठाए हुए ही आता है। और आकर यह वचन कहता है। यहाँ ‘आरूढ़’ को शब्दशः लिया गया है।
yad vā marks a suspended alternative: keep both. Reading one (s16) — Kṛṣṇa 'mounts' the jester = relies on him. Reading two (here) — the jester physically carries Kṛṣṇa to raise a laugh. Neither cancels the other.
यह ‘यद् वा’ से खुला दूसरा वैकल्पिक पाठ है; इसे पहले (सहायता-अर्थ) वाले पाठ में मिलाकर न घटाएँ — दोनों पाठ साथ-साथ रहते हैं।

‘vikṛtāṅga-vaco-veṣaiḥ’ iti lakṣaṇāt — ‘विकृत अंग-वचन-वेष से’ इस लक्षण के कारण।
Viśvanātha justifies the comic-carrying reading from the definition itself: the vidūṣaka was defined (L2) as one who makes people laugh by his distorted body, speech, and dress. Carrying Kṛṣṇa on his back to raise a laugh fits that definition exactly.
यह दूसरा पाठ ठीक बैठता है। क्योंकि विदूषक का लक्षण ही यही है — ‘विकृत अंग, वचन और वेष से हँसाना।’ पीठ पर उठाकर आना उसी विकृत चेष्टा का रूप है।
Why cited: adduces the mūla's own definition of the vidūṣaka (L2, 'distorted body, speech, dress') to warrant the alternative reading that he physically carries Kṛṣṇa for comic effect.
क्यों उद्धृत: विश्वनाथ इस शब्दशः पाठ को L2 के विदूषक-लक्षण से जोड़कर पुष्ट करते हैं — विकृत चेष्टा से हँसाना उसका स्वभाव है।

śleṣeṇa — by the pun; tadā vigata-ādaraṁ vidūṣakaṁ — then a jester without dignity; iti — so; svātmanā ārohaṇe hetuḥ uktaḥ — the reason for (Kṛṣṇa's) mounting him in person is given
śleṣeṇa — श्लेष से; tadā vigata-ādaraṁ vidūṣakaṁ — उस समय आदर-रहित विदूषक को; iti — इस प्रकार; svātmanā ārohaṇe hetuḥ uktaḥ — अपने ऊपर चढ़ने का कारण कहा गया।
Another turn of the pun: vimāna can also read vigata-ādara, 'stripped of dignity' — which is just what a jester is, playing the fool. And that is the very reason Kṛṣṇa can climb on him in person: one does not stand on ceremony with a clown. The pun supplies the reason for the mounting.
श्लेष से ‘विमान’ का एक और अर्थ निकलता है — vigata-ādara, यानी आदर से रहित। तब इसका अर्थ हुआ — आदर-रहित विदूषक। इस तरह कृष्ण अपने ऊपर, यानी इस साधारण विदूषक पर, क्यों चढ़ा, इसका कारण बता दिया गया।
Here vimāna = vigata-ādara ('without regard/dignity'). The jester's self-lowering is precisely why Kṛṣṇa treats him familiarly enough to 'ride' him.

Viśvanātha pulls the threads together. Once more by the pun, vimāna is 'that which makes pride vanish,' and unmatched at it. So Kṛṣṇa has 'mounted me' — mounted splendor itself. Now the picture: when a king rides high on his chariot, people rain flowers on him. That flower-rain both crowns his supreme splendor and, here, destroys pride. So a burst of smiling — the heroine's 'flower-rain' — is exactly what the moment calls for. That is the drift.
The analogy: the king on his chariot = Kṛṣṇa raised high on the jester/on 'splendor'; the flower-rain thrown at the king = the heroine's smile; and this particular flower-rain does double duty — honoring his splendor and dissolving her māna. So her smile is 'only fitting.'

tataḥ ca — और इससे; tayā smitaṁ kṛtam — उसने मुस्कान की; iti jñeyam — ऐसा जान लेना चाहिए।
And the upshot: at this the heroine did break into a smile. Viśvanātha tells us to read that in — the jester's plea worked.
और इसका फल यह हुआ। राधा ने मुस्कान कर दी। यही समझ लेना चाहिए। यानी विदूषक का यह विनोद सफल रहा।
The commentator supplies the unstated result of the scene: the coaxing succeeds and her māna dissolves into a smile.
