na punar idam apūrvaṁ devi kutrāpi dṛṣṭaṁ
na punarnever before na ... punar, emphatic negation: 'not at any earlier time'और पहले कभी नहीं — 'न' के साथ 'पुनर्' मिलकर ज़ोरदार निषेध बनाता है, अर्थात् इससे पूर्व किसी भी समय नहीं
idamthis thing hereयह (जो सामने है) — जिस अपूर्व बात की ओर संकेत हो रहा है
apūrvaṁwhich has never happened beforeअपूर्व, पहले कभी न हुआ — ऐसी अनोखी बात
deviO lady vocative; the messenger's address to the woman she is coaxingहे देवि! — दूती जिस स्त्री को फुसला रही है, उसे सम्बोधन
kutrāpianywhere at all kutra + api, 'even in a single place'कहीं भी — 'कुत्र' और 'अपि' मिलकर, एक भी स्थान पर नहीं
dṛṣṭaṁhas been seen past passive participle, agreeing with idamदेखा गया — 'इदम्' के साथ जुड़ा भूतकालिक कर्मणि रूप, अर्थात् यह पहले कभी देखने में नहीं आया
idam apūrvaṁ — this unprecedented thing; devi — O lady; punar na kutrāpi dṛṣṭaṁ — has never yet been seen anywhere
devi — हे देवि; idam — यह; apūrvam — अपूर्व बात; punar — और; kutra api — कहीं भी; na dṛṣṭam — पहले नहीं देखी गई
The messenger opens with a marvel. 'O lady, here is something never seen before. Nowhere, ever, has anyone seen the like of this.' She is baiting the hook; the wonder she names comes in the next line.
हे देवि! यह तो अपूर्व बात है। ऐसी बात पहले कभी नहीं हुई। कहीं भी, एक भी जगह, यह देखने में नहीं आई।
The verse is spoken as an example (yathā—) in the chapter on the hero's helpers (nāyaka-sahāya). The 'lady' addressed is Rādhā; the speaker is Kṛṣṇa's clever go-between, luring her with a pretext.

śaradi yad iyam ārān mādhavī puṣpitābhūt |
śaradiin the autumn season locative of time — and this is the marvel: mādhavī blooms in spring, not autumnशरद ऋतु में — काल का सप्तमी रूप; और यही तो आश्चर्य है, क्योंकि माधवी तो वसन्त में फूलती है, शरद में नहीं
yadnamely, that relative pronoun spelling out what the 'unprecedented thing' of L1 isकि — जो, जिससे; पहली पंक्ति की 'अपूर्व बात' को यहाँ खोलकर बता रहा है
iyamthis veryयह — यह जो माधवी लता है
ārātclose by, right here adverb, 'near at hand' — so come and lookपास ही, समीप में — इसलिए आकर देख लो
mādhavīthe mādhavī creeper subject of the clauseमाधवी लता — वाक्य का कर्ता
puṣpitā abhūthas burst into flower puṣpitā (blossomed) + abhūt (has become); the wonder itselfफूल उठी है — 'पुष्पिता' (फूलों से युक्त) और 'अभूत्' (हो गई); यही तो वह आश्चर्य है
yad — namely, that; iyam mādhavī — this mādhavī creeper; śaradi — in autumn; ārāt — close by; puṣpitā abhūt — has come into bloom
yad — कि; iyam — यह; mādhavī — माधवी लता; ārāt — पास ही; śaradi — शरद ऋतु में; puṣpitā abhūt — फूल उठी है
Now she names the marvel. 'This mādhavī vine, right here beside us, has broken into flower — and in autumn!' The mādhavī is a spring bloomer, so flowering in autumn is the impossible sight. The word 'close by' does the coaxing work: it is near, so come and see it.
आश्चर्य यह है कि यह माधवी लता शरद ऋतु में ही फूल उठी है। माधवी तो वसन्त में फूलती है। और वह पास ही है। इसलिए आकर देख लो।
mādhavī — a flowering creeper (Gaertnera racemosa / Hiptage) that blossoms in spring (vasanta / mādhava). Its flowering out of season, in śarad (autumn), is the 'never-seen' wonder used as the lure.
माधवी वसन्त में फूलने वाली लता है; उसका शरद में फूलना ही वह 'अपूर्व' बात है जिसका बहाना बनाकर दूती स्त्री को बुला रही है।

iti kila vṛṣabhānor lambhitāsau kumārī
itiwith these words closes the quoted lure of L1-L2 and marks it as the pretextऐसा कहकर — पहली दो पंक्तियों के इस लोभ-भरे वचन को समाप्त करता है और उसे बहाना ठहराता है
kilaso the story goes reportive particle — the speaker is relaying how it was doneकहते हैं कि — सुनी-सुनाई बात का सूचक; वक्ता बता रहा है कि यह सब कैसे किया गया
vṛṣabhānoḥof Vṛṣabhānu genitive; Rādhā's fatherवृषभानु की — षष्ठी रूप; राधा के पिता, इसलिए 'वृषभानु की कन्या' अर्थात् राधा
lambhitāwas led here, was brought causative past passive participle — she was made to comeपहुँचाई गई, लाई गई — प्रेरणार्थक भूतकालिक कर्मणि रूप, अर्थात् उसे लाया गया
asaushe, the girl in questionवह — वही स्त्री
kumārīthe young maiden = Rādhā, Vṛṣabhānu's daughterकुमारी, कन्या — अर्थात् राधा, वृषभानु की पुत्री
iti kila — with just these words, so they say; vṛṣabhānoḥ asau kumārī — that young daughter of Vṛṣabhānu; lambhitā — was led here
iti kila — ऐसा कहकर, कहते हैं; vṛṣabhānoḥ kumārī — वृषभानु की कन्या (राधा); asau — वह; lambhitā — लाई गई
Here the report tells what the words accomplished. 'And with just that speech, they say, Vṛṣabhānu's young daughter was brought along.' The maiden is Rādhā. The whole speech of the first two lines was the bait; this line reveals it worked and she came.
कहते हैं कि ऐसा कहकर वृषभानु की कन्या राधा को लाया गया। यह वचन तो केवल बहाना था। इसी बहाने उसे बुलाया गया।
kila here is reportive — the speaker narrates the deed as an accomplished report to Kṛṣṇa, not as fresh persuasion; the persuading was the quoted lure of L1-L2.

vraja-nava-yuva-rāja vyājataḥ kuñja-vīthim
vraja-nava-yuva-rājaO prince of the young men of Vraja vocative address to Kṛṣṇa — nava-yuva 'the fresh youth', rāja 'king / prince'हे व्रज के नवयुवराज! — कृष्ण को सम्बोधन; 'नव-युव' अर्थात् नया तरुण, 'राज' अर्थात् राजा या युवराज
vyājataḥby this pretext ablative in -taḥ, 'by way of the ruse' — the false errand about the flowerबहाने से — 'तः' प्रत्यय वाला पंचमी रूप; फूल के उस झूठे बहाने के द्वारा
kuñja-vīthimto the path among the bowers accusative, goal of 'was led' (lambhitā, L3); kuñja-vīthi = the grove-lane where Kṛṣṇa waitsकुंज की गली की ओर — द्वितीया रूप, 'लाई गई' (L3 का lambhitā) का लक्ष्य; कुंज-वीथि वह लता-गली जहाँ कृष्ण प्रतीक्षा कर रहे हैं
vraja-nava-yuva-rāja — O prince of Vraja's youth; vyājataḥ — by the pretext; kuñja-vīthim (lambhitā) — she was led to the grove-path
vraja-nava-yuva-rāja — हे व्रज के नवयुवराज (कृष्ण); vyājataḥ — बहाने से; kuñja-vīthim — कुंज की गली की ओर (लाई गई)
The line names who is being told, and where the girl was steered. 'O prince of Vraja's young men, by that pretext she was led to the grove-lane.' The speaker is reporting to Kṛṣṇa himself. The 'pretext' is the out-of-season flower; the destination, the bower-path, is exactly where Kṛṣṇa is waiting. Read across all four lines: a wonder is announced, the wonder is named, the girl is drawn in by it, and she arrives on the grove-path — the errand done.
हे व्रज के नवयुवराज कृष्ण! उस बहाने से उसे कुंज की गली की ओर लाया गया। वहीं तो आप प्रतीक्षा कर रहे थे।
vyājataḥ ('by a pretext') is the pivot word of the whole verse and of the chapter point: the helper's art is to accomplish the meeting under cover of a plausible false errand. The address vraja-nava-yuva-rāja fixes the listener as Kṛṣṇa.

na vyākhyātamhe has left it uncommented na (not) + vyākhyātam (explained, glossed); the editorial note that Jīva gives no commentary hereव्याख्या नहीं की गई — 'न' (नहीं) और 'व्याख्यातम्' (व्याख्या किया गया); यह सम्पादकीय टिप्पणी कि यहाँ जीव कोई टीका नहीं देते
na vyākhyātam — (Jīva) has not commented on this verse
na vyākhyātam — व्याख्या नहीं की गई (जीव ने यहाँ कुछ नहीं लिखा)
Jīva Gosvāmī passes over this verse without comment. There is nothing to decode from him here; the note simply records that he left it unexplained.
यहाँ जीव गोस्वामी ने कोई व्याख्या नहीं की।
vyākhyāta — 'explained, commented on'. The formula na vyākhyātam is the edition's way of recording that a given commentator offered no gloss on this verse, so the lecturer knows the silence is real, not a gap in our text.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī

na vyākhyātamhe too has left it uncommented na (not) + vyākhyātam (explained); the same editorial note, now for Viśvanāthaव्याख्या नहीं की गई — 'न' (नहीं) और 'व्याख्यातम्' (व्याख्या किया गया); वही सम्पादकीय टिप्पणी, अब विश्वनाथ के लिए
na vyākhyātam — (Viśvanātha) has not commented on this verse either
na vyākhyātam — व्याख्या नहीं की गई (विश्वनाथ ने यहाँ कुछ नहीं लिखा)
Viśvanātha Cakravartī likewise gives no comment on this verse. As with Jīva, the note only records the absence of a gloss. (The full commentary here is Viṣṇudāsa's, which is decoded separately.)
यहाँ विश्वनाथ चक्रवर्ती ने भी कोई व्याख्या नहीं की।
The identical formula for both Jīva and Viśvanātha means neither ācārya glossed this verse; the standing explanation is Viṣṇudāsa's alone.
