This is the first mark of the bold hero (dhṛṣṭa). The sign of his love-play with another woman is plainly showing on him. Even so, he is not afraid.

And he is expert at telling lies. Such a hero is indeed called the dhṛṣṭa, the bold or impudent lover. So the two marks are: he shows no fear, and he lies smoothly.

tāḥ tatra tān na arpayanti cathe gopīs do not press those [nail-marks] onto him there [on his body] tāḥ = the gopīs; tān = the marksऔर वे (गोपियाँ) वहाँ (उसके शरीर पर) उन (नख-क्षतों) को अंकित नहीं करतीं
yadyapi — although; tat kṣata-rūpāḥ śrī-vigrahe tena sambhavanti — those wound-shaped marks could arise on his sacred body by that play; yat te sujāta iti dṛṣṭyā — but in view of 'yat te sujāta…'; tāḥ tatra tān na arpayanti ca — the gopīs do not inflict them there
Jīva raises a difficulty. Granted, such marks are wounds, and love-play could leave them on Kṛṣṇa's own body. Yet — remembering the verse 'yat te sujāta…' (which praises how tender his form is) — the gopīs do not actually put nail-marks on him there.
'yat te sujāta' echoes the gopīs' words in the Rāsa-līlā, where they marvel at how exquisitely soft (su-jāta) Kṛṣṇa's feet are and hesitate to place them even on their own breasts — hence they would not wound his body.

Jīva answers his own difficulty. Instead of wounding him, the gopīs only touch his body gently and in fun, with their nails and so on. Even so, faint marks that look like nail-marks do appear. But the rival women do not really believe those are nail-marks; and it is with exactly that understanding that poets write such verses. So this is how the scene should be read.

Viśvanātha fixes the setting. This is Kṛṣṇa speaking to Śyāmā, who is the khaṇḍitā — the heroine wronged and angered by his going to another woman.
khaṇḍitā is a technical nāyikā-type: the heroine whose lover comes to her bearing the visible signs of a night spent with a rival — exactly the situation the illustration depicts.
