Here begins the definition of the dakṣiṇa hero. He is the one who keeps four things toward his former beloved: respect, fear, love, and courtesy.
जो नायक अपनी पहली स्त्री के प्रति आदर, भय, प्रेम और दाक्षिण्य — इन चार को नहीं छोड़ता। यहीं दक्षिण नायक का लक्षण आरम्भ होता है।

anya-cittaḥ api — दूसरी में चित्त लगा होने पर भी; na muñcati — नहीं छोड़ता; asau khalu — वही निश्चय ही; dakṣiṇaḥ jñeyaḥ — दक्षिण नायक जानना चाहिए
Even when his mind has gone to another woman, he still does not let go of those four toward the first one. Such a man, indeed, is to be known as the dakṣiṇa — the courteous hero.
यद्यपि उसका मन किसी दूसरी में लग गया हो, तो भी वह उन चारों को नहीं छोड़ता — ऐसा नायक ही निश्चय ही दक्षिण कहलाता है।

atha prathame dakṣiṇa-lakṣaṇe — now on the first definition of dakṣiṇa; tat idaṁ vicāryate — this is examined; dakṣiṇe saralodārau iti amara-kośāt — per the Amara-kośa 'dakṣiṇa = straightforward and generous'; dakṣiṇaḥ tāvat saralaḥ — so dakṣiṇa first means straightforward
atha prathame dakṣiṇa-lakṣaṇe — अब दक्षिण के पहले लक्षण पर; tat idaṁ vicāryate — इस बात का विचार होता है; 'dakṣiṇe saralodārau' iti amara-kośāt — अमरकोश के इस वचन से (कि दक्षिण = सरल, उदार); dakṣiṇaḥ tāvat saralaḥ — दक्षिण सबसे पहले तो सरल है
Now Jīva examines this first definition of the dakṣiṇa hero. He first fixes the plain dictionary sense: by the Amara-kośa, 'dakṣiṇa' means the straightforward and the generous. So, to begin with, dakṣiṇa means one who is straightforward.
अब दक्षिण के पहले लक्षण पर विचार होता है। अमरकोश में कहा है — 'दक्षिण के अर्थ सरल और उदार हैं'। तो दक्षिण सबसे पहले 'सरल' ठहरता है।
Why cited: The Amara-kośa is cited to fix the base lexical sense of dakṣiṇa (saralaḥ, 'straightforward') before Jīva refines it for the rasa context.
क्यों उद्धृत: अमरकोश को 'दक्षिण' शब्द का कोशगत अर्थ (सरल, उदार) सिद्ध करने के लिए उद्धृत किया गया है — यहाँ 'सरल' अर्थ को आगे बढ़ाया जाता है।

Yet toward the former beloved — one who has constantly worshipped him with a love mixed with reverence, and who does not delight him utterly as the new one does with her special pure attachment — he still keeps all four. Jīva glosses each: 'respect' is the deference that follows reverence; 'fear' is the dread of misfortune should her loving bond be broken through his own fault; 'love' is chiefly affection (sneha), arising from dread of her grief; and 'courtesy' (dākṣiṇya), being of the nature of affection, is the gentleness of conduct that the word dākṣiṇya names. The man who does not abandon these — that is the dakṣiṇa.

rukmiṇī dvāravatyāṁ tu iti'Rukmiṇī, however, in Dvārakā' — quoted phrase; loc. dvāravatyāṁ 'in Dvārakā''रुक्मिणी तो द्वारका में' — इस (वचन) के अनुसार
purāṇa-prasiddha-vacanātbecause of this statement well-known in the Purāṇas ablative of cause; prasiddha = 'famous'पुराण में प्रसिद्ध वचन के कारण
rukmiṇī dvāravatyāṁ tu iti — 'Rukmiṇī, however, in Dvārakā'; purāṇa-prasiddha-vacanāt — because of this statement well-known in the Purāṇas
'rukmiṇī dvāravatyāṁ tu' iti — 'रुक्मिणी तो द्वारका में' — इस; purāṇa-prasiddha-vacanāt — पुराण में प्रसिद्ध वचन के कारण
He supports the identification with a line famous in the Purāṇas: 'Rukmiṇī, however, in Dvārakā.' That is why the former beloved is taken to be Rukmiṇī.
क्योंकि पुराण में यह वचन प्रसिद्ध है — 'रुक्मिणी तो द्वारका में'।
Why cited: The purāṇa-line 'Rukmiṇī dvāravatyāṁ tu' is adduced as scriptural warrant for identifying the former beloved (pūrva-yoṣit) in the verse specifically as Rukmiṇī.
क्यों उद्धृत: इस पुराण-प्रसिद्ध वचन को यह पुष्ट करने के लिए उद्धृत करते हैं कि द्वारका-प्रसंग में पूर्व-योषित् रुक्मिणी ही हैं।

Viśvanātha glosses 'toward the former woman' (pūrva-yoṣit): it means the woman in whom his attachment and involvement first arose.

'His mind on another' means: he whose mind is on another woman — a new one obtained at a later time. By putting it this way, the verse hints at his greater attachment precisely to that new woman.
'अन्य-चित्त' अर्थात् जिसका मन बाद में मिली किसी नवीन स्त्री में लगा हो। इससे उसी नवीना में आसक्ति की अधिकता सूचित होती है।

vyalīkam apriyam |
vyalīkamthe word "vyalīka" (in the verse's "na prekṣyate vyalīkam") pratīka lifted from mūla L3मूल का 'व्यलीक' शब्द (जिसका अर्थ अभी खोला जा रहा है)
apriyammeans something unwelcome, something displeasing. gloss-word standing in appositionअर्थात् अप्रिय — जो बात रुचिकर न हो
vyalīkam — the word vyalīka; apriyam — means "something unpleasant."
vyalīkam — मूल का 'व्यलीक' पद; apriyam — उसका अर्थ है अप्रिय (जो प्रिय न हो)।
Viśvanātha glosses the verse-word vyalīka. It means apriya — something unwelcome or displeasing. So the line "vyalīkaṁ na prekṣyate" is saying: nothing displeasing is to be seen.
यहाँ 'व्यलीक' का अर्थ है अप्रिय — कोई अरुचिकर बात।

ity arthaḥthis is the meaning. closing gloss-formulaइस प्रकार यह अर्थ है (व्याख्या-समापक)
aparādhaḥ — an offense; ity arthaḥ — this is the meaning.
aparādhaḥ — अपराध, दोष; ity arthaḥ — ऐसा अर्थ है।
He tightens the gloss one step further. The "unwelcome thing" (apriya) here specifically means an offense (aparādha). So the verse is saying no offense on Kṛṣṇa's part is to be seen — even in a dream.
और भी पैना करके कहें तो 'व्यलीक' का अर्थ है अपराध — यही तात्पर्य है।

tatra hetuḥ premeti |
tatra hetuḥthe reason for that (that no offense is seen) tatra = 'in that matter', pointing back to s6–s7उस बात में (कि कृष्ण से कोई अपराध नहीं बनता) हेतु यह है
premetiis stated by the word "prema" (in "prema-śuddhāntarasya"). premeti = prema + iti; pratīka from mūla L4मूल का 'प्रेम…' पद — 'प्रेम' शब्द से आरम्भ होने वाला अंश
tatra hetuḥ — the reason for that; premeti — is the word "prema."
tatra — उस विषय में (s6–s7 के प्रसंग में); hetuḥ — कारण; premeti — मूल का 'प्रेम…' पद।
Now he shows why no offense is seen. The reason is carried by the verse-word prema (in the compound prema-śuddhāntarasya). Because Kṛṣṇa's inner self is pure with love for you, no fault appears in him. This prema is also the first of the dakṣiṇa-components the verse is listing.
इसमें (कि कोई अपराध नहीं) हेतु मूल का 'प्रेम…' वाला अंश है।

dākṣiṇyamthe quality dākṣiṇya (obligingness) is shown. second of the four components being mappedदाक्षिण्य — (चार अंगों में यह दूसरा अंग सूचित होता है)
śuddhāntareṇa — by the word śuddhāntara; dākṣiṇyam — dākṣiṇya is indicated.
śuddhāntareṇa — मूल के 'शुद्धान्तर' पद के द्वारा; dākṣiṇyam — दाक्षिण्य (सूचित होता है)।
He maps the second component onto the verse. The word śuddhāntara — "one whose inner self is pure" — is where dākṣiṇya, the obliging, straightforward nature, is being shown. So the verse's "śuddhāntara" carries the dākṣiṇya of the dakṣiṇa-list.
'शुद्धान्तर' पद से दाक्षिण्य सूचित होता है।

sa-vinaye iti — by the phrase "with humility"; gauravam — gaurava is indicated.
sa-vinaye iti — मूल का 'सविनय' पद; gauravam — उससे गौरव (सूचित होता है)।
He maps the third component. The verse's phrase sa-vinaye — "do it with humility" — is where gaurava, deference or respect, is being shown. So acting with vinaya displays the gaurava of the dakṣiṇa-list.
'सविनय' पद से गौरव सूचित होता है।

vinaya-kāraṇatvena bhayaṁ ca ||
vinaya-kāraṇatvenabecause humility is itself the effect of it (fear being humility's cause), instrumental of reason: 'by being the cause of the humility'विनय का कारण होने के नाते (क्योंकि वह विनय का हेतु है)
bhayaṁ cathe quality bhaya (fear) too is shown. ca 'also'; fourth of the four components mappedऔर भय — (चार अंगों में यह चौथा अंग सूचित होता है)
vinaya-kāraṇatvena — because it is the cause of the humility; bhayaṁ ca — and bhaya too is indicated.
vinaya-kāraṇatvena — विनय का कारण होने के कारण; bhayaṁ ca — और भय (सूचित होता है)।
He maps the fourth and last component. The same phrase "sa-vinaye" also shows bhaya (fear) — but indirectly. Humility (vinaya) arises from fear, so where the verse names humility, fear stands behind it as its cause. This completes the four dakṣiṇa-qualities — prema, dākṣiṇya, gaurava, bhaya — all found in the second verse too.
विनय का कारण होने के नाते 'सविनय' पद से भय भी सूचित होता है।
