The verse — decoded
L1definition
vakṣyamāṇair vibhāvādyaiḥ svādyatāṁ madhurā ratiḥ |
vakṣyamāṇaiḥ vibhāva-ādyaiḥby the vibhāvas and the rest — which are to be described (further on) instrumental of means; vakṣyamāṇa = future passive participleआगे कहे जाने वाले विभाव आदि के द्वारा
svādyatāṁ nītābrought to the state of being relished, made tasteable accusative + past participle; nītā agrees with ratiḥआस्वाद्य दशा को पहुँचाई गई (जो आस्वादन-योग्य बना दी गई)
madhurā ratiḥthe sweet rati (love for Kṛṣṇa), the madhura sthāyi-bhāvaमधुरा रति
vakṣyamāṇaiḥ vibhāva-ādyaiḥ — by the vibhāvas and the rest, to be described; svādyatāṁ nītā — brought to being relished; madhurā ratiḥ — the sweet rati (continues into L2).
The verse defines the madhura rasa. Take the sweet rati — love for Kṛṣṇa in the amorous mood. When it is brought to the point of being relished by the vibhāvas and the rest (which the book will describe further on), that is what is meant. The vibhāva "and the rest" are the four ingredients: vibhāva, anubhāva, sāttvika, and vyabhicārī.
L2definition
nītā bhakti-rasaḥ prokto madhurākhyo manīṣibhiḥ
nītā(when so) brought (to being relished) past participle carried over from L1पहुँचाई गई (यह वही 'नीता' है जो ऊपर से आ रहा है)
bhakti-rasaḥ(becomes) the devotional rasaभक्ति-रस
madhura-ākhyaḥthe one named madhura, "the sweet"'मधुर' नाम वाला
manīṣibhiḥ proktaḥso it is declared by the wise instrumental of agent; proktaḥ agrees with bhakti-rasaḥमनीषियों के द्वारा कहा गया
madhurā ratiḥ nītā — the sweet rati, (so) brought to being relished; bhakti-rasaḥ madhura-ākhyaḥ proktaḥ — is declared the devotional rasa named madhura; manīṣibhiḥ — by the wise.
Completing the definition: that sweet rati, once brought to be relished, is what the wise call the devotional rasa named madhura. So the whole verse is a formula — rati plus the four ingredients, made relishable, equals the madhura bhakti-rasa. And note the wording: it is called madhura ("sweet"), the name the ācāryas chose.

Jīva introduces the verse. The subject is the same king of the devotional rasas, the madhura, that the last verse named. It had not yet been laid out in full. So Rūpa now defines it by anuvāda — restating what was already established elsewhere rather than saying it fresh. He does this with the opening word "vakṣyamāṇaiḥ."

Jīva backs up his claim that Rūpa is restating, not inventing. Earlier — in the Bhakti-rasāmṛta-sindhu — the devotional rasa was already declared, but only in general terms, not specifically as the madhura rasa. That general treatment is what this verse now recalls.

This is the general definition Jīva was pointing to. It is the parallel of the present verse, but for bhakti-rasa in general: love for Kṛṣṇa (the sthāyi-bhāva, the standing emotion) is made relishable in the devotees' hearts by the four ingredients — vibhāva, anubhāva, sāttvika, vyabhicārī — worked through hearing and the other practices; and then that love becomes bhakti-rasa. The present verse just narrows this to the madhura case.
Why cited: Cited (Bhakti-rasāmṛta-sindhu 2.1.5) as the earlier general definition of bhakti-rasa — rati made relishable by the four ingredients — which the present verse restates (anuvāda) and specializes to the madhura rasa.

Jīva draws the point from the quotation. That verse did not just define the rasa; it also named the four ingredients — vibhāva and the rest. So these too were already declared earlier. This sets up the string of proof-verses that follow, each defining one ingredient.

The first ingredient, vibhāva, is defined. Vibhāvas are the causes that make rati relishable. They split into two: ālambana, the support — the person on whom the love rests — and uddīpana, the kindler — whatever inflames the love. Jīva quotes this to fix the definition of vibhāva already given in the source.

This defines who the ālambana (support) are. Both Kṛṣṇa and his devotees are the supports of the love, in two roles at once: as the object the love is aimed at, and as the vessel in which the love resides. Jīva adduces it to fill in the first half of vibhāva — the ālambana side.

A quick clarification of the word just used. When the previous verse said "the devotees of Kṛṣṇa" among the ālambana, who counts as such? Those whose whole inner life is soaked in feeling for Kṛṣṇa — they are what is meant by "kṛṣṇa-bhaktāḥ." Jīva pins down the term so the ālambana is not misread.

Now the third ingredient, the sāttvikas, is traced to its root. A mind wholly overtaken by spiritual emotion is what the wise call "sattva." And whatever bodily emotions spring up out of that sattva — those are the sāttvika-bhāvas. So the name "sāttvika" is explained by its source: they come from sattva. Jīva quotes this to define the sāttvikas already declared.

The fourth ingredient, the vyabhicārīs, is introduced. These are thirty-three passing emotions. What makes them vyabhicārī is that they move with a special turning-toward the sthāyi-bhāva, the standing emotion — running up to it, feeding and coloring it. Jīva quotes this to define the last of the four ingredients.

Why cited: Cited (Bhakti-rasāmṛta-sindhu 2.4.1-2) to give the marks by which the vyabhicārīs are recognized — through speech, the body, and the inner state.

This gives the working image for the vyabhicārīs. Picture the sthāyi-bhāva as an ocean of nectar. The passing emotions rise up in it and sink back down; like waves they make that ocean swell higher; and rising from it they take on its very form. This is the analogy: the ocean is the standing emotion, and the waves — appearing, vanishing, swelling the sea, made of the same water — are the passing emotions, which never stand apart from the sthāyin but serve and magnify it.
Why cited: Cited (Bhakti-rasāmṛta-sindhu 2.4.3-4) for the wave-and-ocean image of how the vyabhicārīs relate to the standing emotion — rising, sinking, swelling it, and taking its form.

The list of vyabhicārīs is named by its opening — self-disgust (nirveda), despondency (viṣāda), "and so on" for the rest of the thirty-three. Jīva then sums up the whole chain of quotations: with these four ingredients now defined, the definition of the madhura rati itself has effectively been given. This closes the anuvāda he began.
Why cited: Cited (Bhakti-rasāmṛta-sindhu 2.4.3-4) to open the list of the thirty-three vyabhicārīs (nirveda, viṣāda…); Jīva then notes the whole chain has now given the definition of the madhura rati.

Here is the direct definition of the madhura rati. It is the very love that is the root cause of the mutual union of Hari and the doe-eyed Rādhā. This love is called madhura, and it goes by a second name too — priyatā, "belovedness." Jīva quotes it so the specific rati of this rasa is named outright, not just built up from ingredients.

Why cited: Cited (Bhakti-rasāmṛta-sindhu 2.5.36) to name the madhura rati directly — the love that is the root cause of the union of Hari and Rādhā, also called priyatā — the sthāyi-bhāva of this rasa.

Jīva ties it together. Since the general definition and all four ingredients have been laid out, the definition of the madhura bhakti-rasa here should be read on exactly the same pattern — rati, made relishable by the four ingredients, becomes the rasa. Nothing new in method; just the general formula applied to this one case.

A note on the text itself. Jīva insists the correct reading is "proktaḥ madhurākhyaḥ" — "declared, the one named madhura." Why this reading? Because it points back to and answers the earlier mention: the previous verse pointed to this rasa, and this wording responds to that pointer, matching it. The reading is chosen for its fit with what came before.

Jīva rules out the rival reading. The word should be madhurākhya ("named madhura"), not śṛṅgārākhya ("named śṛṅgāra"). The devotional rasa is deliberately called the sweet (madhura), not by the worldly poetic name for the amorous mood (śṛṅgāra). So the ācārya's chosen term marks this as the spiritual rasa, keeping it apart from mundane śṛṅgāra.

Viśvanātha introduces the verse in his own words. Like Jīva, he reads it as the definition of that same king of the devotional rasas — the madhura — named in the previous verse. Rūpa gives that definition beginning with the word "vakṣyamāṇaiḥ."

Viśvanātha construes the same verse. The sweet rati is brought to the point of being relished. The means are the vibhāvas and the rest — that is, the vibhāvas, anubhāvas, sāttvikas, and saṁcārīs — all of which are suited to this rasa and were already defined in the earlier book. Among them, the vibhāva is the cause, the anubhāva and sāttvika are the effect, and the saṁcārī is the helper. Once the sweet rati is relished in this way, it becomes, as the sthāyī-bhāva of that same name, the bhakti-rasa called madhura, the 'sweet' rasa.
kāraṇa-kārya-sahakārī maps onto the just-named list: vibhāva = the cause that stirs love (like fuel that starts a fire), anubhāva/sāttvika = its effect (like the smoke and heat that show the fire has caught), saṁcārī = the helper that feeds it (like a passing breeze that fans it). Viśvanātha assigns these roles by position; do not read a role the atom does not state onto any single term beyond this three-way split.
