He states, with an illustration, the excellence of the fruit corresponding to the excellence of the conditioning adjunct.
From an earthen clod, which lacks any self-arising tendency to manifest, comes wood; and from wood, by proximity, comes smoke, whose nature is active tendency and which, consisting of the three Vedas, is laden with Veda-enjoined action — this because of its slight proximity to action. And from that smoke comes fire, which likewise consists of the three Vedas, because by its proximity it is the means of accomplishing action.
In the same way, from tamas comes rajas, which is the seeing of Brahman, that is, what reveals Brahman. By the word tu it is stated that from tamas, whose nature is dissolution, rajas — by being the cause of knowledge that is conditioned by adjuncts — is merely something slightly proximate to the seeing of Brahman, and not so in every respect; for, being of the nature of distraction, it cannot itself be a revealer of Brahman. As for the sattva that exists, from its proximity comes the seeing of Brahman.
Hence even Brahmā and the others, who have those qualities as their adjuncts, have a graded excellence, each higher than the last — this is the purport.
But here, where those whose minds have been swayed by the statement that the three are non-different dispute, we say this: although this gradation belongs only to the locus, since the one presiding is the supreme Person, one alone, and difference is therefore impossible, the statement of non-difference is indeed true.
किन्तु यहाँ, जहाँ 'तीनों अभिन्न हैं' इस वाक्य से जिनकी बुद्धि भ्रमित हो गई है, वे विवाद करते हैं, वहाँ हम यह कहते हैं — यद्यपि यह तारतम्य अधिष्ठान-गत ही है, और अधिष्ठाता तो एक ही परम पुरुष है, अतः भेद असम्भव होने से अभेद-वाक्य सत्य ही है;
Even so, since by His being directly present in one place and not directly present in another His manifestation differs, the gradation is truly unavoidable; thus he states it with an illustration, in the words 'pārthivāt.'
From an earthen clod — and not, like smoke, partially of the nature of fire. From that very source, which is devoid of any directly manifest active tendency of Veda-enjoined action, namely from wood — that is, the sacrificial churning-stick — comes smoke that is partially of the nature of fire and consists of the three Vedas: in comparison to the earlier it is the seat of a greater manifestation of Veda-enjoined action. And from that too comes fire itself, consisting of the three Vedas, the seat of the directly manifest action enjoined therein.
In the same way, from tamas, which is like wood, far removed from the quality of sattva, comes the seeing of Brahman as rajas — something like smoke, situated near sattva: it is a doorway to the manifestation of Brahman, who is like Veda-enjoined action, the Person who descends in these various forms. By the word tu it is stated that from tamas, whose nature is dissolution, rajas — by being the cause of knowledge that is conditioned by adjuncts — is merely something slightly proximate to the seeing of Brahman, in the form of a slight appearing of the lustre of that quality, and not so in every respect, because it is of the nature of distraction. The sattva that is like fire — that is the direct seeing of Brahman. It is directly and fully a doorway to the appearing of those various qualitative forms, because it is of a calm and clear nature.
Hence the non-directness of Brahmā and Śiva, and the directness of Śrī Viṣṇu, are established — this is the purport.
And so it is in the Śrī Vāmana Purāṇa: the three forms of Brahmā, Viṣṇu, and Īśa are of the great-souled Viṣṇu; as Brahmā-form he abides in Brahmā, as Śiva-form he abides in Śiva, but the divine Janārdana, who has Viṣṇu's form, abides separately and distinct.
And in the Tenth Canto, in the passage beginning 'Śiva is forever joined with potency, marked by the three guṇas, enveloped by the qualities,' it is said: Hari indeed is directly free of the guṇas, the Person beyond material nature; he is the all-seeing witness, and one worshipping him becomes free of the guṇas.
This is stated in the Brahma-saṁhitā. Just as a flame of a lamp, passing into another state, gives light, sharing a common property with its evident cause, so too the one who shines forth in the same way as Viṣṇu — that primeval Person, Govinda, I worship [bra.saṁ. 5.46]. Just as the sun displays some measure of its own light in its own gem-fragments, so too here; the very Brahmā who is the maker and arranger of the cosmic egg — that primeval Person, Govinda, I worship [bra.saṁ. 5.48]. Just as milk, by the conjunction of a particular transformation, becomes yoghurt and yet is not separate from its cause, so the one who likewise comes to the state of Śambhu through an effect — that primeval Person, Govinda, I worship.
And by the yoghurt-illustration no transformability is incurred, because by the principle 'but as for that, because of its being rooted in scripture' [ve.sū. 2.1.27] it has been repeatedly set aside. As it is said: 'from whom the rising and setting of transformation occur, while he is himself untransformed like clay' [bhā.pu. 10.87.15].
By the three illustrations together, taken in sequence, this is obtained: in the Brahmā-adjunct, which is like a sun-stone, there is some manifestation of him, as of the sun; in the Śambhu-adjunct, which is like yoghurt, there is not even that much manifestation of what is like milk; but in the Viṣṇu-adjunct, which is like the lamp's further state, the manifestation is indeed full [paramātma-sandarbha 13]. Hence it is of Viṣṇu alone that non-difference with the supreme Person is directly stated.
This is so by the words 'commissioned by him I create' [bhā.pu. 2.6.32] and so on, in the Second Canto. It is also stated: 'he indeed is Viṣṇu' [bhā.pu. 3.8.15]. And the śruti says: 'the Person, indeed, Nārāyaṇa, desired' [nā.u. 1]; and 'then from Nārāyaṇa was born the unborn one, from whom are all creatures, all beings.' Nārāyaṇa is the supreme Brahman; the reality is Nārāyaṇa, the supreme; the supreme Brahman is the true and the real, the Person tawny like Kṛṣṇa. Nārāyaṇa alone existed; there was neither Brahmā nor Śaṅkara. Becoming a sage, he reflected; and from that very source were born the Universe, Hiraṇyagarbha, Agni, Varuṇa, Rudra, and Indra.
Thus, even in the testing of the three goddesses, the worshipability of Śrī Viṣṇu alone is plain.
Thus, accepting precisely the difference among the aphorisms enumerating the descents of the Lord, Śrī Datta alone is counted, while Soma and Durvāsas are not counted.
Thus, since the supreme excellence of Viṣṇu is established, the hell that is heard of elsewhere in the case of distinguishing Śrī Viṣṇu from Śiva, being from a scripture that is non-conclusive and Vaiṣṇava, pertains only to a non-conclusive Vaiṣṇava sense. For the opposite of that is indeed heard in the Vaiṣṇava tantra, and in the Uttara-khaṇḍa of the Padma Purāṇa and elsewhere: but one who would regard the divine Nārāyaṇa as equal with deities such as Brahmā, Rudra, and the rest — he surely becomes a heretic.
Likewise, at the end of the Śrī Viṣṇu-dharmottara is the tale of the bursting of the liṅga and of Nṛsiṁha. There was a certain brāhmaṇa named Viṣvaksena, a one-pointed devotee of Viṣṇu. As he was wandering the earth, by chance he met the son of a certain village headman. And this is the conversation between the two:
'Since I am unable to perform the rites for the deity, dear one, worship Śaṅkara; go to the deity's temple, where he is installed. There is a spotless liṅga of the lord of the gods, the great god Mahādeva.' To this he replied: 'We are known to be one-pointed. Hari of the fourfold form is to be worshipped, or else one who has assumed a manifest form; and we worship none other. Therefore go, do not delay.'
Then, when the village headman's son was about to cut off Viṣvaksena's head, not wishing death at his hand, he considered this: 'Very well, let us go there.' Then, going up to the liṅga, at that shrine, when he had thrown a handful of flowers with 'salutations to Śrī Nṛsiṁha' and the other was about to cut off his head on hearing it, Śrī Nṛsiṁha, bursting forth from that liṅga, cut off the heads of the village headman's son together with his retinue.
This very thing is stated in the Skanda Purāṇa: 'Among the Śiva scriptures, that is to be accepted which is in accord with the scripture of the Lord.'
And in the Mokṣa-dharma, in the Nārāyaṇa-tale: Sāṅkhya and yoga, the two eternal ones, and all the Vedas in their entirety, O king — by all the assembled sages together it has been declared: Nārāyaṇa is this universe, the ancient one.
In the Mahābhārata: but one who, abandoning Viṣṇu out of delusion, worships another, is like one who, casting off a heap of gold, wishes to grasp a heap of dust.
For this very reason it is said by Śrī Nārada: one who, without approaching that ever-unastonished one, whose every desire is complete, who is calm and equal through his own gain alone, draws near to another — that fool is like one who would try to cross the ocean by a dog's tail.
In the Śrī Hari-vaṁśa: Hari alone is ever to be meditated upon by you who are established in sattva; recite the Viṣṇu mantra always, O brāhmaṇas, and meditate on Keśava.
For this very reason the superiority of japa of the Viṣṇu mantra is taught in the Śrī Nṛsiṁha-tāpanī śruti: a hundred uninitiated ones equal one initiated; a hundred initiated equal one householder; a hundred householders equal one forest-dweller; a hundred forest-dwellers equal one renunciant; a full hundred of renunciants equal one reciter of the Rudra mantra; a hundred reciters of the Rudra mantra equal one teacher of the Atharvaśiras and Śikhā; a hundred teachers of the Atharvaśiras and Śikhā equal one teacher of the Tāpanīya Upaniṣad; a hundred teachers of the Tāpanīya Upaniṣad equal one teacher of the king of mantras. And the king of mantras there is the Śrī Nṛsiṁha mantra itself.
For this very reason it is said in the Varāha Purāṇa: 'Having worshipped the bull-bannered one for a thousand births, the wise one would attain the state of a Vaiṣṇava once all his sins are destroyed.'
As for what is said in the Śrī Bhāgavata itself — 'one who does not see any difference among the three, who are of one essence and are the self of all beings, O brāhmaṇa, he attains peace' — that is so only with reference to the non-independence of the others as against Śrī Viṣṇu.
This is stated by Śrī Brahmā: 'Commissioned by him I create; Hara, under his control, destroys; and in the form of the Person he protects the universe, bearing the three potencies.' And by Śrī Saṅkarṣaṇa: 'Brahmā, Bhava, and even I are portions of a portion of him' [bhā.pu. 10.68.37]. And by Śrī Kapila: 'by the water of the foremost river that flowed out from washing his feet, set upon his head as a sacred ford, Śiva became Śiva (auspicious).'
With this very intent it is said in the Padma Purāṇa too: one who here, in his thinking, sees as separate the entire array of qualities, names, and the like of Śiva and Śrī Viṣṇu — he indeed is one who does harm to the Name of Hari.
Here, because of the designation by the instrumental in 'by Śrī Viṣṇu,' and because the word 'Śrī' is given here itself, the meaning is: one who would see as separate, in his thinking, as independent, the entire array of qualities, names, and the like of Śiva — which belong to the glorious Viṣṇu, endowed with all potencies, by whom all is implied, and so are his names — from that Viṣṇu.
Hence this very thing is also the statement of Śrī Śiva to Mārkaṇḍeya: 'They do not see even the slightest difference between me and the unfallen, unborn one, nor between their own self and other people; therefore we seek you.' There, 'that': even more than those who see all as the same, we seek you out, that is, we know you, with affection. 'Then, you Bhāgavatas are dear to me, just as the Lord is; and for my Bhāgavatas there is never anyone dearer than they.'
This is so since this very thing is stated by him in the Fourth Canto. For this very reason, prior to that: 'The sage among brāhmaṇas never desires blessings anywhere, nor even liberation; he has attained supreme devotion to the Lord, the imperishable Person.' Thus, when he who was absorbed in samādhi in the Lord through devotion to the glory of Śrī Śiva's words had, for the sake of showing that glory to the Goddess, on a pretext himself entered into Śiva within his heart, there arose a cessation. As it is said: 'What is this, and whence?' — thus the sage desisted from his samādhi [bhā.pu. 12.10.13]. And that could not happen otherwise.
And in the śruti the supreme excellence of Viṣṇu alone is stated: 'whomever I desire, him I make fierce, him Brahmā, him a seer, him most wise' [ṛg-veda 10.125.5] and so on.
Therefore, in worshipping Brahmā and Rudra precisely as belonging to him, there is no fault, because of the acceptance of statements such as 'he, the original god, foremost guru of the worlds' [bhā.pu. 2.9.5] and 'as Śambhu is among the Vaiṣṇavas' [bhā.pu. 12.13.16]. As was practised by Śrī Prahlāda: 'Then, having worshipped, with his head Prahlāda bowed to the highest one (Brahmā), to Bhava, to the Prajāpatis, and to the gods, the portions of the Lord.' And by Śrī Yudhiṣṭhira: 'By the king of sacrifices, O Govinda, by the Rājasūya, I shall worship your purifying powers; therefore bring this about for us, O lord.'
But in worshipping with the notion of independence, the curse of Bhṛgu is hard to overcome, as in the Fourth Canto: Bhṛgu hurled back a curse, the unconquerable rod of brahman: 'Those who hold the vow of Bhava, and those who follow them, let them become heretics, opposers of the true scripture.' Here it is the Veda-enjoined vow of Bhava that is being referred to again. Were it something enjoined by another, the injunction of heresy would be inapplicable, since heresy would already be established beforehand. Therefore this fault belongs to worship with the notion of independence.
And because, there itself, by him the rootedness in the Veda of Śrī Janārdana alone is stated: 'This indeed is the auspicious eternal path of the worlds, which the ancients followed, whose authority is Janārdana.' 'This' is what has the Veda as its mark; 'whose authority' means in whom is the root — this is the meaning.
The attainment of that through independent worship is prohibited in the Śrī Gītā Upaniṣads themselves: 'Even those devotees of other deities who worship endowed with faith — they too, O son of Kuntī, worship me alone, but not according to rule. For I am indeed the enjoyer and the lord of all sacrifices; but they do not know me in truth, and therefore they fall. Those devoted to the gods go to the gods; those devoted to the ancestors go to the ancestors; those who worship the spirits go to the spirits; and those who worship me come to me.'
But disregard and the like is to be wholly avoided.
As in the Padma Purāṇa: Hari alone is ever to be worshipped, the lord of the lords of all the gods; the others, Brahmā, Rudra, and the rest, are never to be disregarded.
And the words of Śrī Bhagavān in the Kūrma Purāṇa: one who would daily worship me, resorting to one-pointed feeling, while reviling the god Īśāna, surely goes to hell.
And in the Gautamīya: but one who would worship Gopāla while reviling another deity — let the higher dharma stand aside; even his former dharma perishes.
'I, of horse-head form, [protect] him on the path from contempt of the gods' [bhā.pu. 6.8.17] — thus in the Śrī Nārāyaṇa-armour is the expiation, by way of expiation for that offence. And in the Fourth Canto is the curse of Nandīśvara: 'Those who, in this world, following him, despise Śarva (Śiva) [shall remain in saṁsāra]' [bhā.pu. 4.2.24].
If there be a wish to inquire in detail here, the Śrī Paramātma- and Bhakti-sandarbhas are to be consulted [paramātma-sandarbha 13].
He states, with an illustration, the gradation of excellence, each higher than the last, of tamas, rajas, and sattva — whose properties are veiling, distraction, and manifestation — and likewise, that being so, the absence of any opposition of this sattva when it is pure sattva.
From an earthen clod, devoid of the active tendency of self-manifesting activity, comes wood; from wood comes smoke, whose nature is active tendency, which is superior. From that too comes fire, having the property of active tendency and manifestation, consisting of the three Vedas because it is the means of Veda-enjoined action. In the same way, since tamas is of the nature of dissolution, rajas, being distracting, is superior; and from that too, sattva, free of dissolution and distraction, is the seeing of Brahman — by passages such as 'from sattva arises knowledge' [gītā 14.17].
In pure sattva, the absence of any tinging of him is stated, through the absence of any opposition. Therefore, in the seeing of Brahman, its being merely free of obstruction is what constitutes its instrumentality — and that instrumentality is figurative, since it is established in the following text that without bhakti the seeing of Brahman is impossible. And thus, because 'bliss is the form of Brahman,' the supreme Lord is of the nature of bliss. By passages such as 'māyā departs, ashamed, when one turns toward him' [bhā.pu. 2.7.47], since the guṇas of māyā — rajas, sattva, and tamas — of themselves have no capacity to touch the supreme Lord, even when their touch has been accepted by the supreme Lord himself through his own will, in Brahmā there is bliss marked by distraction, in Viṣṇu bliss marked by manifestation, and in Śiva bliss marked by veiling; hence there is no harm in bliss being conjoined with manifestation — thus Viṣṇu alone is to be worshipped: such is the discernment.
Here, because pure light is perceived in the wood whereas it is not perceived in the smoke, some say that tamas, which is like the wood, is superior to rajas, which is like the smoke, since even in the deep sleep that is its effect there is the experience of the bare self; thus among Brahmā and Rudra, who possess the qualities of rajas and tamas, Rudra alone is superior — so some hold.
Therefore, in the matter of their being descents of the Lord, the equality of the three, and their inequality through the tinging and non-tinging by the guṇas, are to be reconciled with the Purāṇic statements that establish both non-difference and difference — here, by the śruti 'this Person is indeed unattached.'
Both the Supreme Self and the individual self are by their own nature free of contact with the guṇas; yet, for the Supreme Self, because he is a great ocean of consciousness, because he is the supreme Lord, because of his independence, and because his play is free, even when by his own will, through an agency that is his own, there is contact with the guṇas — in his being Śambhu — though he possesses anger and the rest, which are effects of the guṇas, there is still self-delight, freedom from saṁsāra, and no diminishment of his omniscience. But for the individual self, because it is a particle of consciousness, of little illuminating power, an object of governance, lacking independence, and of little strength, when contact occurs through an agency that is the guṇas' own, there is loss of its knowledge and there is saṁsāra — this is to be discerned.
He clarifies the stated meaning by an illustration, in the words 'pārthivāt.'
From an earthen clod, devoid of active tendency and manifestation — and not, like smoke, partially of the nature of fire — from wood, the sacrificial churning-stick, comes smoke that is partially of the nature of fire, whose nature is a portion of active tendency and heat, consisting of the three Vedas and laden with Veda-enjoined action, because it gives rise to some hope of that action. From that smoke comes fire itself, consisting of the three Vedas, because it is the direct accomplisher of action.
In the same way, from tamas, whose nature is dissolution, comes rajas, which is some seeing of Brahman, because it is somewhat proximate to that, by being a cause of practical knowledge. As for the sattva that exists — that indeed is the seeing of Brahman; for by the smṛti 'from sattva arises knowledge' it is the cause of the direct seeing of him by way of the knowledge that it manifests.
Therefore Viṣṇu, who has sattva as his body, named Vāsudeva, is to be served. But the statements of non-difference with Viriñca (Brahmā) and the others reach their fitting sense because of his pervading them.
