Thus the view is that, by abandoning the effort of action, knowledge, and renunciation, devotion to Bhagavān alone is to be done.
karma-viśeṣa-rūpaṁ devatāntara-bhajanam api na kartavyam ity āha saptabhiḥ |
That the worship of other deities, which is a particular form of ritual action, is also not to be done—this he states in seven verses.

As for the others, what need be said?—since, even though Śrī Bhagavān has the status of a guṇa-avatāra, like Śrī Viṣṇu, He does not directly possess the status of the supreme Brahman, and does not possess the status of benefiting one who is in sattva alone.

Rather, because they nourish passion and ignorance, even Brahmā and Śiva are not to be worshipped by those who seek the highest good—so he states in the two verses beginning 'sattva.'

This is the import: when one serves those two—Brahmā and Śiva—through the view of their conditioning adjuncts, then, because of the dreadful and deluding nature of rajas and tamas, even the dharma, artha, and kāma that come about are not greatly pleasure-giving.

Likewise, when one serves them having abandoned the conditioning adjuncts, even the liberation that comes about is neither direct nor immediate, but only somehow—through the practice of contemplating 'this very one is but a portion of the Supreme Self'—it comes about from the Supreme Self alone, because there and there He does not shine forth directly in the form of the Supreme Self.

Therefore the highest goods do not arise from those two.

But when, even through the view of the conditioning adjunct, one serves Śrī Viṣṇu, then, because of the tranquillity of sattva, even dharma, artha, and kāma are pleasure-giving.
tatra niṣkāmatvena tu taṁ sevamāne sattvāt sañjāyate jñānaṁ [gītā 14.17] iti cokter mokṣaś ca sākṣāt |
And when one serves Him there desirelessly, then, by the statement 'from sattva is born knowledge,' liberation too is direct.

By 'para' the meaning is that, though conjoined with the guṇas, by His inconceivable potency He stands separate, outside them; and precisely because they do not touch Him, He is para, that is, unconjoined.

bhejire munayo’thāgre bhagavantam adhokṣajam | sattvaṁ viśuddhaṁ kṣemāya kalpante ye’nu tān iha ||
The sages of old worshipped the transcendent Bhagavān; pure sattva is conducive to well-being, and those who follow them in this attain it.
[bhā.pu. 1.2.25]
ity uttara-śloka-dṛṣṭyā viśuddha-sattvātmaka-śarīrāt harer eva syuḥ |
By the view of the following verse, they arise from Hari alone, whose body is of the nature of pure sattva.
sākṣī cetā kevalo nirguṇaś ca [śve.u. 6.11] iti |
'The witness, conscious, alone, and free of guṇas'—thus the śruti.
sattvādayo na santīśe yatra ca prākṛtā guṇā [vi.pu. 1.9.44] iti |
'In whom the material guṇas, sattva and the rest, are not present, in the Lord'—thus the Viṣṇu Purāṇa.
harir hi nirguṇaḥ sākṣāt puruṣaḥ prakṛteḥ paraḥ [bhā.pu. 10.88.5] ity-ādi śruti-smṛti-virodhāt |
'For Hari is free of guṇas, the very Person, beyond prakṛti'—because of the contradiction with such śruti and smṛti statements.
harau māyā-guṇasya sattvasya yuktatve’pi tasyāyoga eva |
Even though there could be a conjunction of Hari with sattva, the guṇa of māyā, there is for Him no conjunction at all.
sattvasya prakāśa-rūpatvādaudāsīnyāc ca tena sac-cid-ānanda-vastuno mahā-prakāśakasyoparāgāsambhavāt prākṛta-sattvasya na hi hari-śarīrārambhakatvam |
Because sattva is of the nature of illumination and is neutral, and because there can be no tinging of that being of truth, consciousness, and bliss, the great illuminator, by it—material sattva is therefore not what initiates the body of Hari.
rajas-tamasos tu vikṣepa-rūpatvāvaraṇa-rūpatvābhyām upakārakatvāpakārakatvābhyāṁ ca tābhyām ānandasya vikṣiptatvam āvṛtatvam ity uparāga-sambhavāt brahma-rudrayo rajas-tamas-tanutvam eveti tayoḥ sa-guṇatvaṁ harer nirguṇatvaṁ ca yukti-siddham eva nirguṇatve’pi prākṛta-sattvasya prakāśa-rūpeṇa tat-samīpa-vartitayā tatra sthitatvād viśva-pālana-lakṣaṇas tad-dharme audāsīnyena harau pratīyate |
But because rajas and tamas, by being of the nature of distraction and of veiling, and by being helpful and harmful, are such that by them there is for bliss a being-distracted and a being-veiled—therefore, a tinging being possible, Brahmā and Rudra are indeed of the nature of rajas and tamas; thus their being with-guṇa and Hari's being without-guṇa are established by reasoning; and even in His being guṇa-free, because material sattva, in the form of illumination, abides near Him by being situated there, the property of maintaining the universe is perceived in Hari through neutrality toward that property.
na ca tena tasya nirguṇatvaṁ vyāhatam iti vācyaṁ saṁyoga-samavāya-sambandhābhyāṁ prākṛta-sattvasya tatrāsambhavāt |
And it should not be said that by this His being guṇa-free is contradicted, because material sattva cannot, by the relations of conjunction or inherence, exist there.
sāmīpya-sambandhenaiva tatra sthitatvād iti |
Because it abides there by the relation of proximity alone.
svabhakta-pālanaṁ tu svarūpa-bhūtasya śuddha-sattvasya dharmo jñeyaḥ |
But the protection of His own devotees is to be known as the property of pure sattva, which is His essential nature.
kiṁ cātra brahmaṇo hiraṇyagarbhatvān netaro’nupapatter iti nyāyena tasyeśvaratvābhāvāt jīvatvena tadvati rajasi parameśvarasya yogāt tatrāveśād evāvatāratvam |
grammar Moreover, here, by the maxim 'the other cannot be (the cause), because of impossibility'—Brahmā, being Hiraṇyagarbha, lacks the status of being the Lord; and because, having the nature of a jīva, the Supreme Lord is conjoined with the rajas that he possesses, by His entering there, he has the status of an avatāra.
bhāsvān yathāśma-śakaleṣu nijeṣu tejaḥ svīyaṁ kiyat prakaṭayaty api tadvad atra | brahmā ya eṣa jagad-aṇḍa-vidhāna-kartā
As the sun displays some little of its own splendour in its own crystal-fragments, just so here; this Brahmā who is the maker of the cosmic egg—
govindam ādi-puruṣaṁ tam ahaṁ bhajāmi || [bra.saṁ. 5.49] iti |
I worship that primeval Person, Govinda.
śivasya tu jīvatvābhāvād guṇa-yukteśvaratvam eva |
But because Śiva lacks the nature of a jīva, he has the status of being the Lord conjoined with a guṇa.
yad uktaṁ tatraiva –
As has been said there itself—
kṣīraṁ yathā dadhi vikāra-viśeṣa-yogāt sañjāyate na hi tataḥ pṛthag asti hetoḥ | yaḥ śambhutām api tathā samupaiti kāryād
As milk, by conjunction with a particular transformation, becomes curd—and it is not separate from that cause—so He too attains the state of Śambhu through an effect;
जैसे दूध विशेष विकार के योग से दही बन जाता है—और वह उस कारण से पृथक् नहीं है—वैसे ही वे भी कार्य के द्वारा शम्भुत्व को प्राप्त करते हैं;
govindam ādi-puruṣaṁ tam ahaṁ bhajāmi || [bra.saṁ. 5.45] iti |
I worship that primeval Person, Govinda.
ity ato brahma-śivayor madhye śivasyeśvaratvam iti kecid āhuḥ kecit tu tair yukta iti niyāmaka-sambandhena saṁyoga-sambandhena sāmīpya-sambandhena ca yogo jñeyaḥ |
Hence, between Brahmā and Śiva, some say that Śiva has the status of being the Lord; but others say that the conjunction 'conjoined with them' is to be understood by the relation of being a regulator, the relation of conjunction, and the relation of proximity.
tatra sattvādīnāṁ niyāmakatā-sambandhena yoge sati puruṣaḥ sva-svarūpeṇa sthito nirguṇa eva bhavati |
There, when the conjunction with sattva and the rest is by the relation of being a regulator, the Person, abiding in His own essential form, is guṇa-free indeed.
rajasi tamasi ca saṁyoga-sambandhena yoge sa eva puruṣo brahmā rudraś ca sa-guṇa eva bhavati |
When the conjunction with rajas and tamas is by the relation of conjunction, that very Person, as Brahmā and Rudra, is with-guṇa indeed.
sattve sāmīpya-sambandhena yoge sa eva puruṣo viṣṇuḥ svarūpeṇa sthito nirguṇa eva bhavatīty ācakṣate |
When the conjunction with sattva is by the relation of proximity, that very Person, as Viṣṇu, abiding in His own form, is guṇa-free indeed—so they declare.
ata eva –
For this very reason—
yogo niyāmakatayā guṇaiḥ sambandha ucyate |
Conjunction is said to be the relation with the guṇas by way of being their regulator.
Hence He is not conjoined with them; there it is His own portion that belongs to the Supreme—thus the meaning of the Bhāgavatāmṛta kārikā fits.

Thus, having gone beyond action, knowledge, and the rest, the sole fitness of bhakti to be practised has been stated. In just the same way, having set aside even the worship of other deities, it is said that Bhagavān alone is to be worshipped. And that Bhagavān, though one alone, in sport descending becomes many as well.

This is supported by the words "of many forms and of single form" from the Tenth Canto (Bhāgavata 10.40.7).

His descents are of two kinds: by the cit potency and by the māyā potency. Those by the cit potency—Matsya, Kūrma, and the rest—are worship-worthy indeed. And among those by the māyā potency—Viṣṇu, Brahmā, and Rudra, who are through sattva, rajas, and tamas—Viṣṇu alone is worship-worthy; thus he states it in the verse beginning sattvam.

Here, although it is the one Person alone, the primeval Person, who is for the maintenance and so on—the maintenance, creation, and dissolution—of this universe, conjoined with those, sattva and the rest, He bears the names Hari, Viriñci, and Hara.

The sandhi is an ārṣa (archaic) one.

This accords with the śruti, "The witness, conscious, alone, and free of guṇas" (Śvetāśvatara 6.11); with the Viṣṇu Purāṇa, "In whom the material guṇas, sattva and the rest, are not present, in the Lord" (Viṣṇu Purāṇa 1.9.44); and with "For Hari is free of guṇas, the very Person, beyond prakṛti" (Bhāgavata 10.88.5)—for a contrary reading would conflict with such śruti and smṛti statements.

This rests on such śruti as "Whomever I wish, him I make formidable—him a Brahmā, him a ṛṣi, him a wise one," and on the verses: "And it is I alone who create Prajāpati and Rudra; the two of them do not know Me—My māyā is bewildering. These two, the best among the gods, are held to be born of grace and of wrath; treading the paths He has shown, they are the agents of creation and dissolution."

But sattva He sets in motion Himself, from a distance alone—as the glorious Tenth Canto says, "For Hari is free of guṇas, the very Person, beyond prakṛti."

conclusion

Therefore, there, among the three, the highest goods of men—characterized as dharma, artha, kāma, and mokṣa—would arise from the one of sattva-form, from Viṣṇu the expander of sattva, alone. But from the other two, who are enveloped by rajas and tamas, the three—dharma and the rest—would arise only somehow.
