Passion and ignorance, and the states arising from them—lust and the rest: "unpierced" means unovercome by these. "Prasīdati" means it grows calm.
Then alone—by the method stated in passages such as "Even toward one who is the cause of the wealth of the three worlds, remembrance of Him is unfailing" [Bhā.Pu. 11.2.53]—through the destruction of all latent impressions, the mind, become pure goodness (śuddha-sattva) and foremost, becomes fit for direct perception of the truth of Bhagavān. This he says in the verse beginning "tadā."
Those whose arising is from passion and ignorance are distraction (vikṣepa) and the like; and by the word "and the rest" (ādi) are meant anger, delusion, and envy. It becomes "unpierced," that is, unaltered, whereby—through distaste for sense-objects—there arises in hearing, chanting, and the rest a taste (ruci) characterized by the manifestation of relish.
For in the prior condition, when the mind was pierced by lust, greed, and the rest acting like sharp arrows, how could it become serene? Or how could it gain a full relish of chanting and the like? For to one wracked with pain, food and the like do not taste good—this is the import.
And thereafter it is "established," that is, attached, in sattva—in Bhagavān whose form is pure goodness (śuddha-sattva).
Here, because the word "and" (ca) has the sense of conjunction, the states born of passion and ignorance alone are obtained. Furthermore, in saying "unpierced by these," there exists also a persistence of them up to the level of mere bhāva, in such a way as not to obstruct bhakti at all.
And that niṣṭhā is twofold: that which abides in bhakti directly, and that which abides in what is favourable to it. Of these, direct bhakti, though of endless varieties, is broadly threefold: namely, bodily, verbal, and mental (kāyikī, vācikī, mānasī).
Among these, some say that niṣṭhā in devotion comes about first from the bodily, then from the verbal, and from that alone the mental.
Others say there is no such fixed sequence, because among devotees situated in gradations—even among those of equal vigour and strength—in some particular devotee, by the force of a distinctive and corresponding saṁskāra, a greater Godward-facing inclination may arise in some one of them alone.
Among the things favourable to it (tad-anukūla-vastu) are humility, the giving of respect, friendliness, compassion, and the rest. And niṣṭhā in these is sometimes seen as non-fixity of bhakti in a devotee of calm disposition, and sometimes is not seen even where there is fixity, in a devotee of turbulent disposition; yet even that is bhakti-niṣṭhā indeed—by its own presence or absence it makes the discerning aware of the presence or absence of that niṣṭhā, but a child's naive perception cannot be made authoritative.
As has been said: "Devotion becomes firm and unwavering; then the states born of passion and ignorance—lust, greed, and the rest—the mind, unpierced by these and established in sattva, becomes serene."
In the slackening or strengthening of effort in hearing, chanting, and the rest—arising even in what is hard to abandon—the fixed and the unfixed devotions show themselves: this is the discernment in brief.
In "tadā"—those whose arising, that is, birth, is from passion and ignorance are distraction, dissolution, and the like; by the word "kāma" and so on are meant anger, delusion, pride, and envy. And by these and those the mind becomes "unpierced," that is, unaltered—the meaning being that there is distaste for sense-objects but a taste for hearing, chanting, and the rest. Thereafter, "established," that is, steady, in sattva—in Bhagavān whose form is pure goodness (viśuddha-sattva)—it becomes serene.
