And thereupon, "for those hearing."
He is one whose hearing and glorification are purifying (puṇye śravaṇa-kīrtane yasya saḥ). "The well-wisher of the saintly" (satāṁ suhṛd) means the doer of their good. The inauspicious things in the heart (hṛdi abhadrāṇi) are the latent impressions of desire and the rest (kāmādi-vāsanāḥ). "Seated within" (antaḥ-stho) means being situated in the heart.
Through the narrations, Hari, being seated within (antaḥ-stho), has reached the path of contemplation (bhāvanā-padavī). The inauspicious things (abhadrāṇi) are the latent impressions (vāsanāḥ).
[Bhakti-sandarbha 12]
And thereupon, "for those hearing" (śṛṇvatām)—when hearing and glorifying have been stated in due sequence.
And thereupon, those inauspicious things in the heart (hṛdi abhadrāṇi), the sins—being seated within (antaḥ-sthaḥ), He drives them away (vidhunoti); this is the act of remembrance (smaraṇa).
Now, the act of devotional service (bhajana-kriyā) was previously stated to be of two kinds: the unsteady (aniṣṭhitā) and the steady (niṣṭhitā). Of these, the first was characterized as sixfold (ṣaḍ-vidhā). Then, without characterizing the second, the cessation of the anarthas (anartha-nivṛtti) was taken up.
As was said—by the two verses beginning "for those hearing" (śṛṇvatām). There, by "for those hearing His own narrations, Kṛṣṇa, whose hearing and glorification are purifying" (śṛṇvatāṁ sva-kathāḥ kṛṣṇaḥ puṇya-śravaṇa-kīrtanaḥ), unsteady devotion alone is understood, since the steady (naiṣṭhikī) is to be stated further on. By "He drives away the inauspicious things" (abhadrāṇi vidhunoti), the cessation of the anarthas in the interval between those two is stated. And in "when the inauspicious things are nearly destroyed" (naṣṭa-prāyeṣv abhadreṣu), it is also indicated that not even any portion of them remains uncancelled.
For this very reason, since it comes in due sequence, steady devotion (niṣṭhitā bhakti) is now expounded. "Steady" (niṣṭhitā) means she in whom steadiness, immovability (naiścalya), has arisen, hence "steady."
The immovability of devotion (naiścalyaṁ bhakteḥ), though desired daily, was not accomplished in the state of anartha, on account of the unavoidability of the five obstacles (pañcānām antarīyāṇām)—absorption (laya), distraction (vikṣepa), inertia (apratipatti), taint (kaṣāya), and relishing the wrong taste (rasāsvāda). After the cessation of the anarthas, since those belonging to them are nearly gone, immovability is attained; thus the very absence of absorption and the rest is the mark of steadiness (niṣṭhā-liṅga).
There, "absorption" (laya) is the onset of sleep, prevailing in the later ones among glorifying, hearing, and remembering. "Distraction" (vikṣepa) is contact with worldly talk during them. "Inertia" (apratipatti) is the occasional incapacity for glorifying and the rest, even in the absence of absorption and distraction. "Taint" (kaṣāya) is the latent disposition of anger, greed, pride, and the like. "Relishing the wrong taste" (rasāsvāda) is the non-engagement of the mind in glorifying and the rest at the time when the happiness of sense-objects arises.
And thereupon, "for those hearing" (śṛṇvatām)—Kṛṣṇa, who through the narrations is seated within (antaḥstho) and has reached the path of contemplation (bhāvanā-padavī), drives away the inauspicious things situated in the heart (hṛdi sthitāny abhadrāṇi).
