It is true that love for the narrations of Hari uproots karma; even so, relish for it does not arise. What, then, are we to do?
To this he replies with the words "of one eager to hear."
From the resorting to holy tīrthas there would be, for the sinless one, service to the great souls (mahat-sevā); and thereby faith in their dharma; from that the desire to hear; and from that the relish would arise. This is the meaning.
"Of one eager to hear" has been explained by them themselves.
There, "by resorting to holy tīrthas and the like"—this too would be one path, supported by "they purify over a long time" [bhā.pu. 10.48.31] and the rest. And by "touched, they purify at once" [bhā.pu. 1.1.15] and the rest, there is also the direct path.
Or else: anticipating the doubt "now, even so, the relish for His narrations does not arise for the unfortunate," he states the means there, and beginning from it, he teaches devotion extending up to steadfast (naiṣṭhika) devotion, in five verses.
There, as to "of one eager to hear": according to "on earth the sages, free of pride, dwelling at the abodes of the many holy tīrthas" [bhā.pu. 10.87.35] and the rest, since mostly there is contact with the great there, and by the assent of his commentary as well, from the cause that is the resorting to holy tīrthas there comes a service to the great souls (mahat-sevā) obtained spontaneously, and by that the relish for the narrations of Vāsudeva (vāsudeva-kathā-ruci) would arise. For one who wanders to a tīrtha even for some other purpose—a meritorious person who performs the dharma that pleases the Lord—the service of the great, of those who mostly wander or abide there, in the form of seeing, touching, conversing, and the like, comes about of itself. And by its power, faith (śraddhā) in their conduct arises. In their natural mutual talk about Bhagavān, the desire "what are these saying? let me hear it" arises. And by hearing it, relish (ruci) for it arises. And so the import is that what is heard from the great alone swiftly does its work.
And so the words of Śrī Kapiladeva:
"Through association with the saintly, the narrations of My heroic deeds become elixirs for the heart and the ear; by relishing them, swiftly, on the path to liberation, faith, then love, then devotion will follow in succession."
"Even so, hear the manner in which affection for the narrations comes to manifest," he says, with the words "of one eager to hear."
"By service to the great souls" (mahat-sevā)—by the service to the great that is produced by their spontaneous grace—for one full of faith, a man in whom faith has arisen (śraddadhāna), the holy tīrtha (puṇya-tīrtha) is the true guru, and the resorting to him is taking shelter at his feet.
As Amara has it: "Tīrtha, in the senses of a means and of scripture, means a water frequented by sages, and a guru."
And therefore, for that one who is eager to hear, relish for the narrations of Vāsudeva would arise; such is the construal.
He states the manner in which relish for the narrations comes to manifest, with the words "of one eager to hear."
By service to the great souls (mahat-sevā), produced by their spontaneous grace, for one eager to hear and full of faith—a man in whom firm conviction has arisen—from the resorting to a holy tīrtha, that is, from taking shelter at the feet of a guru who cuts away doubt, relish for the narrations of Vāsudeva (vāsudeva-kathā-ruci) would arise.
As Amara has it: "Tīrtha, in the senses of a means and of scripture, means a water frequented by sages, and a guru."
