That a dharma devoid of devotion is mere toil has already been elaborated. Now, however, he elaborates that devotion has liberation for its fruit.
Meditation upon whom—that very meditation is the sword; joined with it, the discerning ones sever that karma which binds the knot, namely egoism. Who, then, would not make love for the narrations of Him?
In order to state an easy method extending all the way to the final stage, he generates—by mere reasoning that is independent of the hardship of dharma and the like—its first stage, the relish for the narrations of Śrī Hari, and so calls to mind His quality.
The wise are the discerning ones, and the joined are those of restrained minds. Meditation upon whom—that is, the mere contemplation of Hari—is itself the sword; with it they sever that karma which binds the knot, namely egoism, across the various bodies.
Who indeed would not make love for the narrations of Him, such as He is, the rescuer from the supreme misery?
Now, by the words of Bhagavān—'or so long as faith in the hearing of My narrations and the like has not arisen' [bhā.pu. 11.20.9], 'the faithful one hearing My narrations' [bhā.pu. 11.11.23], 'one in whom faith in My narrations has arisen' [bhā.pu. 11.20.27], and the rest—it is only the one who has faith in the narrations who is entitled to devotion. So how can that faith arise in the first place? To this he replies with the words 'meditation on whom.'
Meditation upon whom is itself the sword; joined and accompanied by it, the people sever that karma which is the binding of the knot—the knot being egoism—by which one is bound.
Or else: just as people, out of their accumulated wealth, set apart some small amount for a single day's meal and bind it into their own knot, in just that way they also sever the binding of the knot, namely the prārabdha-karma to be enjoyed in the present birth. Who would not make love, affection, for the narrations of Him? Thus even affection for His narrations arises at once—how much more the faith that betokens entitlement? This is the import.
Generating, by the quality of meditation, the cause of faith in entitlement to devotion, he says 'whose.'
The wise are the discerning ones; the joined are those of restrained minds. Meditation upon whom—that is, the remembrance of Hari—is that very sword; with it.
They sever that karma which binds the knot, the sense of 'I' in the body. Who would not make love, taste, for the narrations of Him? Some say the binding of the knot is the prārabdha-karma, likened to provisions for a journey; the meaning is that the body's continuance is by the Lord's will, as in the maxim of the burnt cloth.
