It is pure being, pure bliss. And so the Paiṅgi-śruti: "Now why is it called sattva? Because it rejoices and causes rejoicing."
It is not object-knowledge particularized by the spheres of effect, cause, and content; that knowledge is unmixed, alone. And yet it is also particularized by creatorship and the rest, by effect and cause.
And in the Tantra-bhāgavata: "Knowledge that does not depend on objects and is not particularized by objects, that which is pure bliss—let that be ascertained as Brahman." Whatever is established beyond ordinary sight.
And that truth is attained only by devotion together with its retinue—this he states.
The construal is "and that" (tac ca). In "endowed with knowledge and detachment" (jñāna-vairāgya-yuktayā), here the knowledge is indirect. And that truth they see within the self, in the knower of the field (kṣetra-jña). What is that truth? The Self, the Supreme Self (paramātman). By "grasped through what is heard" (śrutena)—that is, attained through the hearing of Vedānta and the like—the firmness of devotion is stated.
And that very truth, endowed with a threefold manifestation, is made directly perceptible by devotion alone—this he states in "that" (tad).
By devotion—which is the supreme state of the very relish for His narrations and has the character of prema—that previously stated truth they see within the self, in the purified consciousness. Of what sort is that truth? The Self, the abode of the potencies called svarūpa, called jīva, and called māyā. "Endowed with knowledge and detachment" (jñāna-vairāgya-yuktayā) means served by those two, knowledge and detachment, which are born from itself. For this very reason it follows that they see Him as distinct and as qualified.
Thus, by the three words "grasped through what is heard" (śruta-gṛhītayā), "the sages" (munayaḥ), and "the faithful" (śraddadhānāḥ), the rarity of that very devotion is shown.
If, through hearing the deliberation upon the meaning of Vedānta and the whole body of scripture from a true guru, that devotion is known to be the necessary, supreme duty, and further, if—as in the verse "Bhagavān thrice surveyed Brahman in its entirety with discernment and ascertained that by which there may arise unshakable rati toward the Self"—there come to be an absorption in contemplating its worthiness and an absorption in contemplation that abandon contrary imagining, then for the faithful that devotion is attained by way of worship.
Therefore the śruti too takes up that purport: "The Self, my dear, is to be seen, to be heard, to be reflected upon, to be deeply meditated upon" [Bṛhad-āraṇyaka Upaniṣad 2.4.4.6]. Here deep meditation (nididhyāsana) is worship, and seeing (darśana) is called direct realization (sākṣātkāra). [Bhakti-sandarbha 7]
[bhakti-sandarbha 7]
He states the means of attaining that.
That threefold knowledge the sages (munayaḥ)—the men of reflection, the jñānīs, the yogīs, and the bhaktas—see by devotion. There, on the view that it is Brahman, within the self—and in the īśvara who is the referent of the word "tat"—they see, they experience, the self, the jīva who is the referent of the word "tvam." On the view that it is Paramātman, within the self, within the heart, they see the Self, the indwelling controller (antaryāmin); by meditation they behold Him. On the view that it is Bhagavān, within the self, within the mind, and—from the word "ca"—outside as well, they see the Self, Bhagavān, shining forth; with their very own eyes they relish His sweetness.
"By devotion" (bhaktyā): first heard from the mouth of the guru, afterward grasped—by that devotion. Since the word "bhakti" is conventionally fixed upon hearing, chanting, and the rest that have Bhagavān alone as their object, even by the worshippers of Brahman and the worshippers of Paramātman, for accomplishing their respective goals, devotion to Bhagavān must indeed be performed.
"Endowed with knowledge and detachment" (jñāna-vairāgya-yuktayā): for those two—the worshippers of Brahman and of Paramātman—knowledge and detachment are to be understood as separate means. On the view of the bhaktas, they are to be understood as manifesting the prema-nature of devotion, of the rati that rises from devotion, since the śruti says: "Therefore, for one who is joined to devotion to Me, the yogī whose self is fixed on Me, neither knowledge nor detachment is generally beneficial here"—because for pure bhaktas the separateness of the two is denied.
Or else: that threefold knowledge the bhaktas alone are able to experience by devotion alone—this he states. "Those faithful toward that" (tac-chraddadhānāḥ)—the meaning is that some become desirous to experience even that threefold form. Then, by devotion alone they see. By this, the meaning is that for Brahman and Paramātman the means—knowledge and yoga—come to their accomplishment by devotion alone.
That truth is attainable by devotion together with its retinue—this he states: the sages (munayaḥ) see by devotion that truth, the Self, the all-pervading one whose nature is consciousness and bliss, abiding within the self, within the mind. By the final state of relish for His narrations, which has the character of prema, they experience Him even with the eye, according to the śruti, "some wise one, meditating, saw the inner Self; thereafter he beholds Him, the partless one."
He states of what sort that devotion is: heard first, grasped afterward. Served by knowledge and the rest, which are born from itself, by reasoning—such is its firmness.
So the author of the sūtra says: "also in worship, through perception and inference."
