"Non-dual" (advayam) means without an equal or a superior.
'अद्वय' अर्थात् जिसके समान या अधिक कोई नहीं।
And so the Bhāllaveya śruti: "He is the Person, He is the non-dual one." And: "none is toward Him, none is beyond Him." And in the Mahā-saṁhitā: "He is the non-dual Person; therefore there is none equal to or greater than Him."
इसी प्रकार भाल्लवेय श्रुति कहती है: 'वह पुरुष है, वह अद्वय है।' तथा: 'न उसके अभिमुख कोई है, न उससे परे कोई है।' और महा-संहिता में: 'वह अद्वय पुरुष है, इसलिए उससे न कोई समान है, न अधिक।'
The meaning of the word "tattva" is stated there itself: "That which is uttered as such in the past and future time, which cannot be brought to be otherwise by anything — that the knowers of truth know as the Reality (tattva)."
'तत्त्व' शब्द का अर्थ भी वहीं कहा गया है: जो अतीत तथा अनागत काल में वैसा ही उच्चरित होता है, जिसे किसी से अन्यथा नहीं किया जा सकता — उसे तत्त्ववेत्ता तत्त्व रूप में जानते हैं।
Now, some say: the inquiry into truth (tattva-jijñāsā) is just the inquiry into dharma, for dharma alone is indeed the Reality. To this he replies: but the knowers of truth call that alone the Reality. And what is that? That which is named "knowledge."
अब कुछ लोग कहते हैं: तत्त्व-जिज्ञासा अर्थात् धर्म-जिज्ञासा ही है, क्योंकि धर्म ही तो तत्त्व है। इस पर कहते हैं: किन्तु तत्त्ववेत्ता तो उसी को तत्त्व कहते हैं। वह क्या है? जो 'ज्ञान' नाम से है।
By "non-dual" (advayam) he sets aside the position of momentary cognition [of the Buddhists].
'अद्वय' पद से [बौद्धों के] क्षणिक-विज्ञान-पक्ष का निराकरण करते हैं।
Now, are the knowers of truth too uttering conflicting statements? Not so. The meaning is that it is because of the naming of that very same Reality by other names: by the followers of the Upaniṣads it is called "Brahman"; by the followers of Hiraṇyagarbha, "Paramātmā"; by the Sātvatas, "Bhagavān."
अब, क्या तत्त्ववेत्ता भी परस्पर विरुद्ध वचन ही कहते हैं? ऐसा नहीं। अर्थ यह है कि वह उसी एक तत्त्व का अन्य नामों से अभिधान होने के कारण है: औपनिषदों के द्वारा 'ब्रह्म', हैरण्यगर्भों के द्वारा 'परमात्मा', तथा सात्वतों के द्वारा 'भगवान्' कहा जाता है।
"They call" (vadanti) — this has been explained by them. There, in "conflicting statements," the word "mutually" is to be supplied. And "because of the naming of the Reality by other names" means: because there is no error on anyone's part regarding the substratum, the possessor of attributes, whereas error is only regarding dharma taken as the substratum.
Or else, when it is asked "what is the Reality?" he says "vadanti." "Knowledge" (jñānam) is of the single nature of consciousness (cit). And its non-duality (advayatva) is because of the absence of any other reality, whether like it or unlike it, that is self-established, and because it has its own potency as its sole companion — and because those potencies are themselves unestablished without Him, the supreme support. By "Reality" (tattvam), through the indication of its being the supreme human goal, its nature as supreme bliss is made known; and precisely thereby its eternality too is shown.
Here, in the very śāstra named Śrīmad-Bhāgavata, and sometimes elsewhere too, that one Reality is named (śabdyate) in three ways: sometimes as "Brahman," sometimes as "Paramātmā," and sometimes as "Bhagavān." But it is to be known that here, because of the difference attained through the blessed Vyāsa's samādhi, it is not also said to be named "jīva."
Here, the bare knowledge that is apart from the group of potencies and from their dharmas is named "Brahman"; that which is distinguished by a portion of the consciousness-potency, abounding in the māyā-potency that constitutes indwelling-control, is "Paramātmā"; and that which is distinguished by all potencies in their fullness is "Bhagavān."
यहाँ, शक्ति-वर्ग-लक्षण तथा उनके धर्मों से अतिरिक्त केवल ज्ञान 'ब्रह्म' कहा जाता है; अन्तर्यामित्व-मयी माया-शक्ति से प्रचुर चित्-शक्ति के अंश से विशिष्ट 'परमात्मा' कहा जाता है; तथा परिपूर्ण समस्त शक्तियों से विशिष्ट 'भगवान्' कहा जाता है।
Just this has been said by the blessed Jaḍa-Bharata: "The pure knowledge that is the one supreme object, internal yet not external, the true Brahman, the inmost and tranquil, designated by the word 'Bhagavān,' which the sages call Vāsudeva." [bhā.pu. 5.12.11]
इसी प्रकार श्री जड-भरत के द्वारा कहा गया: वह विशुद्ध ज्ञान जो एक परमार्थ है, अन्तर्वर्ती किन्तु बाह्य नहीं, सत्य ब्रह्म, अन्तरतम तथा प्रशान्त, 'भगवान्' शब्द से संज्ञित, जिसे कवि वासुदेव कहते हैं। [भा.पु. 5.12.11]
And in "obeisance to Him, to Bhagavān, to Brahman, to Paramātmā" [bhā.pu. 10.28.6], in Varuṇa's hymn to Śrī Kṛṣṇa, the commentary too runs thus: "to Paramātmā, the controller of all living beings."
और वरुण-कृत श्री कृष्ण-स्तुति के 'उन भगवान् को, ब्रह्म को, परमात्मा को नमस्कार' [भा.पु. 10.28.6] इस वचन पर टीका भी इस प्रकार है: 'परमात्मा को, अर्थात् समस्त जीवों के नियन्ता को।'
And to Dhruva, by the blessed Manu: "You, then, in the inmost self, are Bhagavān, the infinite, sheer bliss, endowed with all potencies." [bhā.pu. 4.11.30] Here "sheer bliss" is the qualificand, "all the potencies" are the qualifiers, and what results is the qualified "Bhagavān."
और ध्रुव के प्रति श्री मनु के द्वारा कहा गया: तब आप अन्तरतम आत्मा में भगवान्, अनन्त, आनन्द-मात्र, समस्त शक्तियों से सम्पन्न हैं। [भा.पु. 4.11.30] यहाँ 'आनन्द-मात्र' विशेष्य है, 'समस्त शक्तियाँ' विशेषण हैं, और जो परिणाम निकलता है वह विशिष्ट 'भगवान्' है।
The meaning of the word "Bhagavān" is stated in the Śrī Viṣṇu-Purāṇa: "Knowledge, potency, strength, sovereignty, valor, and splendor, in their entirety, are what are denoted by the word 'Bhagavān' — apart from the contemptible qualities and the rest." [vi.pu. 6.5.79] [Bhagavat-sandarbha 1]
'भगवान्' शब्द का अर्थ श्री विष्णु-पुराण में कहा गया है: ज्ञान, शक्ति, बल, ऐश्वर्य, वीर्य तथा तेज — ये सम्पूर्ण रूप से 'भगवान्' शब्द से वाच्य हैं — हेय गुणों आदि से रहित। [भा.पु. 6.5.79] [भगवत्-सन्दर्भ 1]
What indeed is the Reality? To this he replies with "vadanti." The non-dual knowledge — that is the Reality. And what indeed is that knowledge? To this he replies: it is named "Brahman"; what is denoted by the word "Brahman" by the knowers, that is the knowledge.
तत्त्व ही क्या है? इस पर कहते हैं 'वदन्ति'। जो अद्वय ज्ञान है, वही तत्त्व है। वह ज्ञान ही क्या है? इस पर कहते हैं: वह 'ब्रह्म' कहा जाता है — जो ज्ञानियों के द्वारा 'ब्रह्म' पद से कहा जाता है, वही वह ज्ञान है।
In their view, the knowledge is formless, devoid of the divisions of knower, known, and so forth — the consciousness-in-general — because the consciousness-particulars, such as the Lord's abode and the rest, are held to be non-different from it. Because the jīva and māyā, as being His potencies, are one with Him, and because the effect, the universe — the locus of the notion "this" — is of the nature of mere cause, it is non-dual (advaita).
Likewise, what is called "Paramātmā" by the yogīs — that is the knowledge. In this view, because Paramātmā is of the single nature of consciousness, He is mere knowledge; and even in being mere knowledge, He is also the locus of the knowledge-particular such as witnesshood. Just as the sun, a lamp, and the like, though of the nature of light, are also luminous, so this is not inconsistent — "some, in the cavity of the heart within their own body, behold the Person, the size of a thumb, dwelling there" [bhā.pu. 2.2.8] — and hence His having form too. Because māyā is His potency, and the things made of māyā are non-different from Him, and because the jīva is His separated portion, there being no second thing apart from Him, there is non-duality (advayatva).
Likewise, what is called "Bhagavān" by the devotees — that is the knowledge. In this view, as before, even in His being mere knowledge, because the six sovereignties denoted by the word "bhaga" are also non-material and thus of the nature of pure consciousness, they are of His very nature — as was said in the Viṣṇu-Purāṇa: "Of complete sovereignty, of valor, of fame, of beauty, and of knowledge and dispassion — of these six the designation is 'bhaga.'" [vi.pu. 6.5.74] "Knowledge, potency, strength, sovereignty, valor, and splendor, in their entirety, are what are denoted by the word 'Bhagavān' — apart from the contemptible qualities and the rest." [vi.pu. 6.5.79] And just so, although He abides outside and within in His various dense-consciousness forms such as the two-armed and four-armed, by statements from the Skānda and the rest such as "My devotees do not fall away even in the great dissolution," even amid the eternal distinction of object-of-service, servitor, service, and the like, there is non-duality as before — because His potencies, the consciousness-things and the rest, and His sportive expansions, the Vaikuṇṭhas and the rest, are held to be non-different from Him; the very conceiving of them as different from Him is what is set aside by the word "advaya" (non-dual).
And thus, when the mere general nature of Bhagavān is what is to be taken up, for the qualified knower, it is "Brahman." When the possession of the dual dharma such as indwelling-control is taken up, for the qualified yogī, it is "Paramātmā." When there is the fitness to grasp His possession of many dharmas — His inconceivable, infinite, consciousness-and-bliss nature, form, qualities, pastimes, and the rest — for the qualified devotee, it is "Bhagavān." He alone, the one, shines forth.
Moreover: "whose friend is the supreme bliss, the full, eternal Brahman" [bhā.pu. 10.14.31]. From statements such as "to Kṛṣṇa, to Vāsudeva, to Hari, to Paramātmā" [bhā.pu. 10.73.36], "and My own glory is termed the supreme Brahman" [bhā.pu. 8.24.23], "for I am the basis of Brahman" [gītā 14.27], "pervading this entire universe with a single portion, I abide" [gītā 10.42], and likewise from the observed attainment of prema by the Lord's worshippers — and because the attainment of prema is not observed for worshippers of Brahman and Paramātmā — the Brahman-hood and Paramātmā-hood belong to Bhagavān alone; hence it is to be seen that Bhagavān-hood alone is the root.
There, in comparison with the knowers who worship Brahman, the yogī who worships Paramātmā is superior; and than those yogīs too, the worshipper of Bhagavān is superior — this gradation is seen in the Gītā, thus: "The yogī is greater than the ascetics, and is held to be greater than the knowers too, and greater than those devoted to action; therefore, become a yogī, O Arjuna." "Of all yogīs too, the one who, with his inner self absorbed in Me and full of faith, worships Me — him I hold to be the most united." [gītā 6.46-47]
"Of all yogīs" (yoginām) — the genitive is in the sense of the ablative, as explained by the feet of Śrī Rāmānujācārya.
'योगिनाम्' — यह षष्ठी पञ्चमी के अर्थ में है, ऐसा श्री रामानुजाचार्य-चरण के द्वारा व्याख्यात है।
Life's gain was said to be the inquiry into truth; he now shows the Reality with "vadanti": "The non-dual knowledge — that is the Reality."
जीवन का अर्थ तत्त्व-जिज्ञासा कहा गया; अब 'वदन्ति' से तत्त्व को दिखाते हैं: 'जो अद्वय ज्ञान है, वही तत्त्व है।'
"Non-dual" (advayam) — other than the duo consisting of the jīva and prakṛti; the negative particle "na" in a-dvaya is in the sense of being other than them, hence the meaning is: distinct from them.
'अद्वय' — द्वय अर्थात् जीव-प्रकृति-रूप से अन्य; उनसे अन्यत्व में 'नञ्' है, अतः अर्थ है: उनसे भिन्न।
And the Reality is not merely the absence of the duo that has the form of the world, for the knowers of truth who declare it do so by way of its being existent, since its absence cannot be asserted; and were it non-existent, it would have no validity; and because, even in liberation, its existence is stated in "they drink up the abode."
Knowledge is self-luminous, untouched even by a trace of inertness; nor is the Reality featureless on account of its being grammatically an instrument-of-action (bhāva-sādhana), because of the opening word "abhijña" (the all-knowing) and because of the manifestation of distinctions by "brahmeti" and so forth.
ज्ञान स्व-प्रकाश है, जड़ता की गन्ध से भी अनाघ्रात; और तत्त्व भाव-साधन [व्याकरणिक रूप] होने के कारण निर्विशेष नहीं है, क्योंकि 'अभिज्ञ' इस उपक्रम से, तथा 'ब्रह्मेति' आदि से विशेषों के व्यक्त होने से [वह सविशेष है]।
Although knowledge is grammatically an instrument-of-action, still, through a distinction, it appears as a knower — just as the luminance characterizing the sun appears as an illuminator.
यद्यपि ज्ञान भाव-साधन है, तथापि विशेष के कारण वह ज्ञातृ रूप में प्रतीत होता है — जैसे सूर्य का लक्षण प्रकाश प्रकाशयितृ (प्रकाशक) रूप में प्रतीत होता है।
And a distinction (viśeṣa) is a surrogate for difference, not difference itself; even in a thing without difference it conveys the effect of difference, as in "existence is existent," "difference is differentiated," "time exists always," and the like, recognized even by the learned. Without it, the relation of qualifier and qualificand and the like would not be possible.
और विशेष भेद का प्रतिनिधि है, भेद नहीं; निर्भेद वस्तु में भी वह भेद-कार्य का प्रत्यायक है, जैसे 'सत्ता सती है', 'भेद भिन्न है', 'काल सदा है' इत्यादि में, जिसे विद्वान् भी प्रतीत करते हैं। उसके बिना विशेषण-विशेष्य-भाव आदि सम्भव नहीं होगा।
Nor is the cognition "existence is existent" and so on an error, since it does not deviate, like "the pot is existent"; nor is it a superimposition, for unlike "the lion is Devadatta," the form "existence is existent" is never not in use. Nor, in the absence of another existence and so forth for existence and the rest, is the usage "it is existent" merely from its own nature, since here that very own-nature is what is expressed by the word "distinction" (viśeṣa).
Its establishment is from the things cognized as it, since otherwise the usages would be unaccountable, and also from the śruti "thus, seeing the dharmas separately, he runs after them" [ka.u. 4.14].
उसकी सिद्धि उसके रूप में प्रतीत होने वाले अर्थों से है, चूँकि अन्यथा [व्यवहार] अनुपपन्न होंगे, तथा 'इस प्रकार धर्मों को पृथक् देखता हुआ उनके पीछे दौड़ता है' [क.उ. 4.14] इस श्रुति से भी।
Here indeed, by speaking of the dharmas of Brahman, their separateness from Brahman is denied; for surely, in the absence of that Brahman, the relation of dharma and dharma-possessor, and the multiplicity of dharmas, cannot be asserted; and that relation is hard to abandon even on the view of mere-consciousness-oneness. For there, the difference of the sentence-meaning, consciousness-oneness, from the purified word-meaning is not accepted, since on that view the word-meaning would turn out to be false. There, if there is no distinction, then even when consciousness shines, its oneness would not shine; and although its shining is not opposed to the illusion of difference, the shining of its oneness would be opposed to that — so how could the effect of difference occur there? And that thing is non-different from itself, being self-sustaining; thus there is no infinite regress.
And His being such is established by the very means that grasps the dharma-possessor — like the creator of the world having knowledge, will, and the act of fashioning. And that Reality, whose qualities are made manifest by the distinction, is named "Brahman" — and so onward too.
और उसका वैसा होना धर्मी-ग्राहक प्रमाण से सिद्ध है — जैसे जगत्-कर्ता का ज्ञान-इच्छा-कृतिमत्त्व। और वह तत्त्व, जिसके गुण विशेष से निर्भासित हैं, 'ब्रह्म' इस नाम से कहा जाता है — और आगे भी इसी प्रकार।
Thus the primacy of the three among the three is indicated; there, by the first, "Brahman," is shown the being of great and infinite qualities — from the Vedic etymology: "Now, why is it called Brahman? Because great (bṛhantaḥ) qualities are in it."
इस प्रकार तीनों में तीनों की प्रधानता सूचित होती है; वहाँ प्रथम ['ब्रह्म'] से बृहत् अनन्त-गुणत्व दिखाया गया — श्रौत निरुक्ति से: 'अब वह ब्रह्म क्यों कहलाता है? क्योंकि इसमें बृहत् (महान्) गुण हैं।'
"His qualities cannot be stated separately, because of their immeasurability; therefore, by the word 'Brahman,' the grasping of them all comes about." "Hence this word 'Brahman' is an epithet of Viṣṇu alone." Because His qualities are immeasurable, which are not so for others apart from the all-pervading Lord.
उसके गुण अमित (अपरिमेय) होने के कारण पृथक् कहे नहीं जा सकते; इसलिए 'ब्रह्म' शब्द से उन सबका ग्रहण होता है। इसी से यह 'ब्रह्म' शब्द विष्णु का ही विशेषण है — क्योंकि उनके गुण अमित हैं, जो विभु के अतिरिक्त अन्यों के [वैसे] नहीं हैं।
"By 'Brahman' is meant, from excellence, the maintainer (saṁbhartā), and likewise the sustainer (bhartā): the letter 'bha' is joined with a double meaning; the leader, the conveyer, the creator — that is the meaning of the letter 'ga,' O sage. Of complete sovereignty, of valor, of fame, of beauty, and of knowledge and dispassion — of these six the designation is 'bhaga.'" [ve.sū. 4.1.5] "In whom the beings abide, He the self of beings within the self of all; and He is in all beings without remainder — that is the meaning of the letter 'va,' hence imperishable. Knowledge, potency, strength, sovereignty, valor, and splendor, in their entirety, are what are denoted by the word 'Bhagavān' — apart from the contemptible qualities and the rest. He cannot be seen, being beyond words; from Him words turn back, not attaining Him; even the Unborn is not able to describe Him in His entirety along with the mind." [bhā.pu. 12.4.39]
