The gain — the result — of sense-enjoyment, of sense-objects, is not sense-gratification; rather, by as much as one may live, just that much is the gain of sense-enjoyment. The meaning is that only the sense-enjoyment sufficient for such living is to be resorted to.
And of life, again, through the performance of action — by ritual actions — that which is well known here as heaven and the like is not the gain; rather, the desire to know the truth (tattva-jijñāsā) alone is the gain.
Thus the purport is that the very knowledge of truth (tattva-jñāna), which was stated to be the intermediate fruit of devotion (bhakti), is itself the supreme fruit. (Bhakti-sandarbha 6)
The gain — the result — of sense-enjoyment, of sense-objects, is not sense-gratification; rather, by as much as one may live, just that much sense-enjoyment, sufficient for living, is to be resorted to — this is the meaning.
There, in the case of the knowers (jñānī) and the yogīs, gain and the gratification of desire and the senses are the incidental fruits of knowledge and yoga, and are designated as fruits of action only, because knowledge and yoga are themselves a transformation of desireless action (niṣkāma-karma). Hence, for the knowers and the yogīs, the seen pleasure and pain are spoken of as fruits of action only. But for the devotees (bhakta), gain, desire, and the gratification of the senses are the incidental fruits of devotion (bhakti) alone. Because devotion is not a transformation of action, there is no designating them as fruits of action. Hence, for the devotees, the seen happiness is the fruit of devotion alone.
As for pain — "Whomever I favor, I gradually take away his wealth; then, becoming poor and stricken by sorrow upon sorrow, his own people abandon him" (Bhāgavata Purāṇa 10.88.8). From this and similar words of the Lord, it is to be discerned as appropriate that the pain is either Lord-sent (bhagavad-uttha) or the fruit of an offense against devotion (bhakty-aparādha).
Of life, the fruit is the desire to know the truth (tattva-jijñāsā); and that which here is well known as heaven and the like, gained by repeatedly performed ritual actions, that is not the gain at all.
The gain of sense-enjoyment (kāma) — the sense-gratification of the skin and the rest, the experiencing of touch and the rest — is the gaining of the contentment of the skin and so forth; but that is not the result, because it is momentary, as the Mokṣa-dharma says: "in the union of touch, pleasure is held to last only as long as the flight of an arrow; and so in tasting, seeing, smelling, and hearing, O lord of men!"
Rather, by as much as one may live, just that much is the gain of sense-enjoyment, as the Nāradīya says: "one should accept as much as suffices for one's own maintenance; in excess or in deficiency the knower of gain falls away from the supreme aim."
"Of life" (jīvasya, from jīvana) — the suffix ghañ is in the sense of the verbal action. Through the performance of desireless dharma (niṣkāma-dharma) that purifies the mind, the desire to know the truth (tattva-jijñāsā) alone is the gain.
That which here, by ritual actions, is proclaimed as the gain — cattle, sons, heaven, and the like — that is not the gain, the meaning being: precisely because it is perishable.
This is to be understood here: for those bent on cessation, the seekers of liberation (mumukṣu), the proper actions are those occasioning cessation, as from the statement to come: "one should perform cessation-natured (nivṛtta) action; one devoted to Me should give up activity-natured (pravṛtta) action" (Bhāgavata Purāṇa 11.10.4). And those cessation-natured actions are precisely the agnihotra, the darśa-paurṇamāsa, and the cāturmāsya — free of animal slaughter.
In the Mokṣa-dharma [175.31-33], in the dialogue between father and son: "I, indeed, being non-violent, a seeker of truth, free from lust and anger, equal in sorrow and joy, secure, shall cast off death like an immortal. Delighting in the sacrifice of peace, self-controlled, established in the sacrifice of Brahman, a sage whose sacrifice is of speech, mind, and action, I shall become so in the northern course. How can one like me perform sacrifice with violent animal-sacrifices? As a wise man, knowing the end, he shuns kṣatriya-sacrifices like a flesh-eating demon."
There itself, in the dialogue between Kapila and Syūmaraśmi: "The darśa and the paurṇamāsa, and the agnihotra of the wise, and the cāturmāsyas too there were — among them the eternal sacrifice. Free of violent undertakings, well-controlled, pure, designated as belonging to Brahman — by Brahman alone do they, desiring nectar, gratify the gods" [Śānti-parva 268.20-21] — and from this statement of Kapila.
These are non-violent in their primary intent for the fully accomplished; but for those firm in devotion (bhakti), they are undertaken out of a wish to draw in the people — their primacy being because of their being mixed with peace. But the jyotiṣṭoma, warfare, and the like, though violent, are stated for the restraining of the engagement of those, charged with kṣatriya-dharma, who are of an over-active temperament. And upon that restraining, there would indeed come about peace and purification of the heart — hence their being secondary.
