On āpavargyasya and dharmasya arthāya and arthonopakalpate, — Of dharma 'leading to liberation' (āpavargyasya) — that is, of dharma which by the stated principle culminates in liberation — 'gain' is 'not suited' 'for the sake of gain,' meaning it is not fit to be its result.

On arthasya and kāmo lābhāya and na hi smṛto — Likewise 'sense-enjoyment' is 'not' 'indeed' held by the sages 'for the sake of attaining' — that is, as the result — 'of gain' that does not deviate from such [liberation-leading] dharma.

Thus the supreme dharma, which through devotion to Hari culminates in dispassion toward what is other than Him and in knowledge of the self, has been stated.

But others think otherwise. In their view, the result of dharma is material gain; the result of that is enjoyment; of that, sense-gratification; and from that gratification, again the succession of dharma, gain, and so forth. As they say: "From dharma come gain and enjoyment — for what purpose is it not pursued?" and so on.

He refutes that with "dharmasya," in the two verses.

Of dharma "leading to liberation" (āpavargyasya) — that is, of dharma which by the stated principle culminates in liberation — "gain" is "not suited" "for the sake of gain," meaning it is not fit to be its result. Likewise "sense-enjoyment" is "not" "indeed" held by the sages "for the sake of attaining" — that is, as the result — "of gain" that does not deviate from such [liberation-leading] dharma.
