He states the negative case with the word 'dharma.' That which is well known as dharma — if it does not produce attachment to the topics of Viṣvaksena, then, even though well performed, it is to be known as toil.
Now, even the dharma aimed at liberation has the character of toil. To this he says 'merely' (kevalam), the meaning being: fruitless toil.
Now, there too there is a result such as heaven — apprehending this objection, he refutes it by the word 'only' (eva). The meaning is that, because it is perishable, it is not a result.
Now, from śruti such as 'imperishable indeed is the merit of one who performs the cāturmāsya,' the result of that is not perishable — apprehending this, he establishes his point by the word 'surely' (hi), because perishability is demonstrated by reasoning-supported śruti such as 'just as here the world won by action perishes, so there too the world won by merit perishes' [Chā.U. 8.1.6].
He states the negative case with the words 'dharmaḥ svanuṣṭhitaḥ.' If, through the absence of the pleasing of Vāsudeva, it does not produce attachment — liking — for His topics, the descriptions of His pastimes, then it would be toil and not a result.
Because the liking for the topics is everywhere primary and supreme, that very thing has been stated. And by its being indicative, liking for other forms of worship too is taught.
By the word 'only' (eva), the perishability of the fruit of activity-natured action, such as heaven, is shown. By the word 'surely' (hi), there is reasoned śruti-authority in that very text: 'just as here the world won by action perishes' [Chā.U. 8.1.6].
'Merely' (kevalam), as decided from the Amara-kośa, where 'kevalam' is given as an indeclinable, shows the unattainability of knowledge — which is the fruit of cessation-natured dharma — and, even when attained, its perishability.
There too, by that same word 'surely' (hi), are indicated the authority of śruti such as 'in whom there is supreme devotion to God' [Śve.U. 6.23], and the authority of statements such as 'even actionlessness, when devoid of feeling for Acyuta, is not beautiful' [Bhā.Pu. 1.5.12], 'O mighty Lord, those who, casting aside the auspicious path of devotion to You, toil for the mere attainment of knowledge' [Bhā.Pu. 10.14.4], and 'having ascended with great difficulty to the supreme abode, they then fall down again, having disregarded Your feet' [Bhā.Pu. 10.2.32].
From the two verses it is gathered that devotion is independent, whereas knowledge and dispassion are dependent on it.
Now, how is dharma characterized by varṇāśrama conduct not the supreme one? To this he says 'dharma': that dharma which is excellently performed by men — by brāhmaṇas and the rest.
It does not produce attachment to the topics of Viṣvaksena, as per the śruti 'by action, the world of the forefathers,' and there is the non-productiveness of attachment by acts of karma. This is made plain by Nārada's own words in the Fourth Canto, beginning 'or by the actions enjoined in the three Vedas,' in 'where Hari, the bestower of the self, is not' [Bhā.Pu. 4.31.10-12].
And if it does not produce attachment, then it is merely toil, because the world of the forefathers and the like is perishable; therefore the purport is that, abandoning one's own dharma, the supreme dharma stated earlier, characterized by hearing, chanting, and the like, alone is to be practiced.
Or else, the objection is raised: 'Dwelling in this world, established in his own dharma, sinless and pure, one attains pure knowledge and devotion to Me spontaneously (yadṛcchayā)' [Bhā.Pu. 11.20.11].
From this statement of the blessed Lord, desireless karma-yoga itself is a cause of devotion; so how is devotion said to be causeless?
True. There, karma-yoga cannot be explained as a direct producer of devotion the way it is of knowledge, because of the use of the word 'spontaneously' (yadṛcchayā) in the middle. And so, the sense there is this: if, in that person, by the spontaneity of devotion — by the freedom that is the spontaneity of devotion — by chance an entrance of pure devotion independent of anything else should occur, then he attains that too. Since 'spontaneity' is stated to be freedom, if by a labored interpretation it were explained otherwise, the self-luminous nature of devotion would not be established; so that is disregarded. Hence, even desireless karma-yoga is not a cause of devotion, and this he says with 'dharma' and 'ya.'
The supreme dharma stated in the words 'that indeed is the supreme dharma of men' [Bhā.Pu. 1.2.6] — other than that, the dharma characterized by varṇāśrama conduct, well performed even though desireless, which does not produce attachment, fondness, for the topics of Viṣvaksena — that is merely toil, 'if' (yadi) being used in the sense of censure; the meaning being that, because it produces toil, it is censurable.
'Yadi' is in the senses of censure and of alternative, per the Medinī lexicon.
Or else, even where there is no doubt, a word of doubt is used, as in 'if the Vedas are an authority.' And this follows too from the explanation of the venerable Svāmin's feet that, in 'You, the protector, if You set Your foot upon the head of the obstacle,' the word 'yadi' there is in the sense of certainty.
Or else, the objection: now, it is heard that even from the well-known dharma, in some cases, fondness for the topics of Hari is produced. True. Since without that fondness the fruit of dharma is not attained, that fondness is indeed merely adventitious and not essential — this he says with 'dharma.'
'Ya' — that well-known dharma, whether desire-prompted or obligatory, if it does not produce attachment, fondness, for the topics of Viṣvaksena, then it is merely toil. This is the meaning: just as it is farming alone that produces in farmers fondness for the king — otherwise there would be no attaining of its fruit — even so dharma too, seeing its own fruitlessness apart from fondness for the topics of Viṣvaksena, does not produce, in the discerning, fondness there; then it is merely toil. Just as, without fondness for the king, there is merely toil because of the non-attaining of the fruit of farming, even so, without devotion to Hari, there is toil because of the non-attaining of the fruits of activity-natured and cessation-natured dharma — heaven and knowledge.
As was said: 'How much more so the action that is never offered to the Lord, inauspicious as it is — that too is without effect' [Bhā.Pu. 1.5.12, 12.12.53].
And just as in farming it is only on account of the fondness that there is fondness for the king, not in actual fact, even so in dharma it is only on account of the fondness that there is fondness for the topics, not there in actual fact — thus it is to be discerned. Therefore Prahlāda said: 'Not otherwise is the relation between us two, like that between a king and a servant' [Bhā.Pu. 7.10.6].
He speaks the negative case with 'dharma.' 'Attachment' (ratim) means the liking for hearing His topics; and as for that result of it, such as heaven, which is proclaimed — that, because it is destructible, is not a result, from the word 'surely' (hi).
