Now, from śruti texts such as “the brāhmaṇas seek to know that very One through recitation of the Veda, through sacrifice, charity, and fasting austerity” [bṛ.ā.u. 4.4.22], it is well known that dharma is an auxiliary to knowledge; so how is it said to be the cause of bhakti? True; but that is through the medium of bhakti — this he says with “vāsudeve.”
The meaning is that it is causeless — beyond dry argumentation and the like, attainable through the Upaniṣads. Sanātana Gosvāmī [ha.bha.vi. 11.572] gives the same: the meaning is that it is causeless — beyond dry argumentation and the like, attainable through the Upaniṣads.
Or else, that state which is to be attained by desireless persons — namely what is called liberation, or what is called Śrī Vaikuṇṭha — that too.
Or else, the meaning is that it produces also prema, free from any aim at a result.
And so, in accordance with texts such as “in whom there is selfless devotion to the Lord, in him all the gods, with all good qualities, take their seat” [bhā.pu. 5.18.12], the knowledge of the Lord's own nature and so forth, and the dispassion toward what is other than Him, would indeed follow as its consequence — this he says with “vāsudeve.” It produces, by even a slight measure of hearing alone, that causeless knowledge which is beyond dry argumentation and the like and is attainable through the Upaniṣads.
In some texts the reading is “jñānaṁ ca tad ahaitukam.”
Now, this very satisfaction of the self — of what form is it? When this is asked, it consists of nothing but the knowledge that is the experience of the sweetness of the Lord's form and qualities, which brings about aversion to all base objects — this he says with “vāsudeve.”
“Applied” (prayojitaḥ) means thoroughly joined, connected — that is to say, made to be endowed with a relationship such as servitorship, friendship, and the like. By a double sense (śleṣa), it also means “made into the goal” — the meaning being that it has been deliberated upon thus: the goal of the yoga of devotion is the yoga of devotion alone, and nothing else.
“It produces” (janayati): the purport is that no separate effort for the sake of knowledge and dispassion need be made by devotees. “Quickly” (āśu) means swiftly — the meaning being, at that very time.
As will be stated: “Devotion, the direct experience of the Supreme Lord, and dispassion toward what is other — these three occur for one who takes shelter at one and the same time, just as for one who is eating there occur, with each mouthful, satisfaction, nourishment, and the easing of hunger” [bhā.pu. 11.2.42].
Now, then, from knowledge there would be only liberation — to this he replies with “causeless” (ahaitukam): just as in “he dwells for the sake of food,” so a “cause” (hetu) here means a purpose; and that purpose here, namely sāyujya (merging), it does not warrant. Thereby it comes about that the knowledge is made of nothing but the experience of the sweetness of the Lord's form and qualities.
In just this way it will be stated also in the Fourth Canto: “The yoga of devotion firmly fixed on Vāsudeva, the Lord, will, when proper, produce dispassion and knowledge” [bhā.pu. 4.29.37].
There the manner of its being “proper” (sadhrīcīna) will be explained to be precisely the absence of any aim at another result such as liberation.
“He swiftly comes to have recourse to the topics of Acyuta, O royal sage — for one who hears, who has faith, and who constantly studies them” [bhā.pu. 4.29.38]. And in the verse coming between, the cause of that too is said to be He alone, seen.
And thus it is established that both the cause and the goal of devotion are devotion itself.
Now, without dispassion and knowledge, devotion would not be steady — to this he replies with “vāsudeve.”
In Vāsudeva — in Kṛṣṇa, who is to be known through reasoned discussion (vāda); for “because of dwelling and because of discussion He is called Vāsudeva,” from Hara's statement addressed to Him in the Harivaṁśa. For “discussion” (vāda) is the speech of one who wishes to know the truth.
At the very time of performing one's own dharma directed toward Him, those two — dispassion and knowledge — sprout; but the yoga of devotion that arises from that makes them fully blossom — this is the meaning. As for “causeless” (ahaitukam), the meaning is that it is unreachable by dry argumentation, attainable through the Upaniṣads.
