Here comes the answer to what was first asked — "tell us the essence of all the scriptures, the absolute highest good" — namely, "That indeed, for human beings."
The meaning is this: dharma is of two kinds, of the nature of engagement (pravṛtti) and of the nature of withdrawal (nivṛtti). Therein, that which is of the nature of engagement, aimed at heaven and the like, is the lower one. But that from which arises devotion — characterized by hearing about dharma, reverence, and the like — is the highest dharma, and that very one is the absolute highest good.
Of what kind is this devotion? It is "unmotivated" (ahaitukī): a motive is the pursuit of a result, and this devotion is free of that. It is "uninterrupted" (apratihatā): unsubdued by obstacles.
Thus, to make known the supreme, all-surpassing status of the highest good — which is the essence of all the scriptures, characterized by devotion to Him that is marked by the question about the appearance of the Supreme Lord Himself named Śrī Kṛṣṇa — he states the all-surpassing status, as the highest good, of devotion to the mere appearance of the Lord, in the passage beginning "that indeed" (sa vai) and ending "therefore, indeed, the wise" (ato vai kavayaḥ).
From which dharma there comes, toward Adhokṣaja, devotion — a taste for hearing and the like about His narratives — because this will be shown by way of contrast in "dharma well performed" [Bhā.Pu. 1.2.8] and the rest.
"That indeed" (sa vai) means "that very one." By the manner that is to be stated — "the perfection of one's own well-performed dharma is the satisfaction of Hari" [Bhā.Pu. 1.2.13] — the dharma done for the sake of His satisfaction alone is the highest, supreme over all; and not so the one characterized by mere withdrawal (nivṛtti), because of no difference in its aversion to the world.
And likewise the statement of Śrī Nārada: "even desireless action devoid of devotion to Acyuta" [Bhā.Pu. 1.5.12] and so forth, "...how much more, then, action that is ever inauspicious and not offered to the Lord, though it be without motive."
Therefore it will be stated, "hence, by human beings" [Bhā.Pu. 1.2.13] and so forth. Therefore that very one is the absolute highest good — such is the meaning. By this, devotion's being something over and above even such well-performed dharma is shown.
He states the essential quality of that devotion: since it is of the nature of happiness in itself, it is "unmotivated" (ahaitukī), free of the pursuit of any other result. It is "uninterrupted" (apratihatā): because there is no other object that gives happiness beyond it, it cannot be obstructed by anything. And once it, characterized by taste, has arisen, by that very devotion the yoga of devotion characterized by hearing and the like would be set in motion.
He states the answer to the two questions, "tell us the essence of all the scriptures, the absolute highest good": "that indeed for human beings" (sa vai puṁsām) — for human beings as such alone, the highest, supreme dharma (dharmaḥ paraḥ), characterized by hearing, glorifying, and the like.
As has been said: "This alone, in this world, is the arising of the highest good for human beings: by intense devotional yoga, the mind fixed steadfastly on Me." Therefore the dharma qualified by the word "highest" (para) is the yoga of devotion.
"It alone would be" (eva bhavet) — thus here, by the suffix vatup and by the word "eva" (alone), the fitness of anything else to be designated by the term "highest dharma" is denied. "From which" there "would be" devotion characterized by prema, "unmotivated" (ahaitukī), arising without any motive at all — so the devotion with qualities (saguṇā) is excluded.
But surely, this is a great denial being made? Not so.
The dharma in the form of hearing, glorifying, and the like is itself devotion under the name of sādhana. That very same, in its ripened state, is under the name of prema. Both of these are spoken of by the very word "bhakti." Even so — "by devotion thus born, by devotion they bear a body with hair erect" [Bhā.Pu. 11.3.31] — in "from which comes devotion to Adhokṣaja" and the like, the prior devotion is the cause of the later devotion, just as the unripe mango is the cause of the ripe mango.
Its being a cause, founded merely on a difference of relish, is only imaginary, for the instruction of the immature, not real. For the relation of cause and effect among the many states — childhood, youth, and the rest — of one and the same person is not real, as with the loss of the names and forms of clay, threads, rice-grains, and the like in pot, cloth, cooked rice, and the rest. It is to be settled that such causal status cannot be expounded there.
Nor should it be said that the well-known cause of devotion is the association of the holy (sādhu-saṅga) alone. For of that too — since it is stated as the second stage of devotion in "first faith, then association with the holy, then the activity of worship" [Bha.Ra.Si. 1.3.11] and so forth — it has the very nature of devotion; and because it will be expounded further on as well, in "it may come about through service to the great, O brāhmaṇa" [Bhā.Pu. 1.2.16].
Moreover, the yoga of desireless action — gifts, vows, austerity, oblations, and the like — becomes somehow a cause of the sāttvika devotion alone, which is a limb of knowledge, but not of the nirguṇa devotion, because of this statement of the eleventh canto: "Whom one could not attain by yoga, by Sāṅkhya, by gifts, vows, austerity, and sacrifices, by exposition, study of the Veda, and renunciation, even striving hard."
Nor should it even be said that the grace of the Lord alone is the cause of the nirguṇa devotion, for if a cause of that too be sought, there would be an infinite regress.
Nor should it be said that the Lord's grace alone, being unconditioned, is the sole cause, because, since that grace is not universal, there would arise partiality in the Lord.
Moreover, by the statement that the grace of the devotee alone is the cause, there is no incongruity whatever, because partiality is seen in the definition of the intermediate devotee: "one who shows prema, friendship, compassion, and disregard — even where there is no partiality among the most exalted devotees — he is the intermediate one" [Bhā.Pu. 11.2.46]. And so, since the Lord is subject to His devotee, the Lord's grace, which follows the devotee's grace, is the cause — such is the settled conclusion.
But then, how did devotion come to be unmotivated? It is said: since the Lord's grace is included within the devotee's grace, and the devotee's grace within the devotee's association, and the devotee's association is a limb of devotion, its being unmotivated is indeed established. Moreover, the cause of the devotee's grace is the devotion residing in the heart of that very devotee, for without it the arising of grace is impossible. In every way, devotion alone is the cause of devotion — thus its being causeless is established. In the view of devotion, devotion, the devotee, the one worthy of worship, His grace, and the rest are not distinct realities; so, though devotion is illumined by devotion in its being self-luminous, the Lord's being self-luminous too is not unestablished.
"Uninterrupted" (apratihatā): incapable of being warded off by anyone. Thus indeed in its definition: "the movement of the mind unbroken, as of the Gaṅgā's water to the ocean" [Bhā.Pu. 3.29.12] — it will be stated. And it is said by Śrī Rūpa Gosvāmī: "in every way free from destruction, even when a cause of destruction is present" [U.Nī. 14.63].
Or: "uncovered by knowledge, action, and the like" (apāvṛtā). "By which devotion the self, the mind, becomes wholly satisfied" — since, when there is the impurity of desire, the mind's being a cause of satisfaction is impossible, the desirelessness of this devotion follows of itself.
He states the answer to the first question, "tell us the absolute highest good for human beings": "that" (sa). For human beings, the dharma enjoined for each — characterized by the agnihotra and the like — is the highest, the best, from which devotion to Adhokṣaja, to Hari, a taste for His narratives, would arise. But that which has heaven and the like as its fruit is the lower one — such is the meaning.
Of what kind is this devotion? It is "unmotivated" (ahaitukī), devoid of desire for a result; the devotion for which there would be no fruit other than the one worthy of worship is "unmotivated." It is "uninterrupted" (apratihatā): because of its strength, unsubdued by obstacles.
