Because "it conquers saṁsāra by means of it," the text is the "Jaya"; and "one should recite it" — so, reciting it thus himself, he instructs the other reciters of the Purāṇas.
'इसके द्वारा संसार को जीतता है' — इस निरुक्ति के अनुसार वह ग्रन्थ 'जय' है; और 'उसका उच्चारण करे' — इस प्रकार स्वयं वैसा उच्चारण करते हुए वे अन्य पौराणिकों को शिक्षा देते हैं।
On "Nārāyaṇa."
'नारायण'।
Here Nara and Nārāyaṇa are designated as the presiding deities of this śāstra, and from the word "and" (ca) Śrī Kṛṣṇa is its further deity. Sarasvatī is its śakti, and from the word "and" (ca) Vyāsa is the ṛṣi — and in the reading "vyāsam," this is plain enough. But the seed (bīja) is to be known as the praṇava alone, because it is stated, "Oṁ; in Naimiṣa" [Bhā.Pu. 1.1.4]. The meter (chandas) here is to be known as the gāyatrī, since "dhīmahi" is stated [Bhā.Pu. 1.1.1] and the work begins with that very meter.
Therefore they are to be revered — such is the inner sense.
इसलिए वे नमस्करणीय हैं — यही भाव है।
Having bowed to the guru, he offers obeisance to the deities and the rest, with "Nārāyaṇa."
गुरु को नमस्कार करके वे देवता आदि को प्रणाम करते हैं — 'नारायण'।
By way of their authority over the region (deśa), Nara and Nārāyaṇa are designated as its presiding deities. "The best of men" (narottamam): the supreme person, Śrī Kṛṣṇa, is its deity. Sarasvatī is its śakti, and from the word "and" (ca) Vyāsa is the ṛṣi — and in the reading "vyāsam," this is plain enough. But the seed (bīja) is to be known as the praṇava alone. The meter (chandas) here is to be known principally as the gāyatrī alone, since the work begins with that very meter. Having bowed to them: "Jaya" is a verb-form supplied by implication, a vocative addressed to Śrī Kṛṣṇa. As for "udīrayet" — reciting it thus himself, he also instructs the other reciters of the Purāṇas.
Because "it conquers saṁsāra by means of it," the text is the "Jaya"; or else it is "that" text. There, since the immediate sequence is already accomplished by the gerund affix (ktvā), "tataḥ" (then) is a qualifier of the agent.
'इसके द्वारा संसार को जीतता है' — इस प्रकार वह 'जयोग्रस्थ' (ग्रन्थ) है; अथवा 'तम्' (उस ग्रन्थ को) — वहाँ ल्यप् (क्त्वा) प्रत्यय से ही आनन्तर्य सिद्ध हो जाने पर 'ततः' (तब) कर्ता-विशेषण है।
Some hold that it ends in the kta affix.
कुछ लोग मानते हैं कि यह क्त-प्रत्ययान्त है।
He offers obeisance to the deities: Nārāyaṇa, and Nara, the protector of the realm; and "the best of men," the supreme person, Śrī Kṛṣṇa, who is to be expounded by the śāstra.
वे देवताओं को प्रणाम करते हैं — 'नारायण और नर, खण्ड के पालक; नरोत्तम, पुरुषोत्तम श्री कृष्ण, शास्त्र के प्रतिपाद्य।'
"The goddess Sarasvatī": as her eulogy in the Skānda declares her "dear to Keśava," she is His beloved, His śakti, the giver of knowledge.
'देवी सरस्वती' — स्कान्द के 'केशवस्य प्रियाम्' इस स्तोत्र के अनुसार वे केशव की प्रिया, उनकी शक्ति और ज्ञान-दात्री हैं।
"And having bowed to Vyāsa," the son of Parāśara, the scripture-ṛṣi — by the etymology "it conquers ignorance by reflection (manana)" — one should recite, that is, utter, the text the "Jaya"; so, uttering it thus himself, he instructs others.
'और व्यास' — पाराशर, शास्त्र-ऋषि को नमस्कार करके — 'मनन से अविद्या को जीतता है' इस निरुक्ति से 'जय' ग्रन्थ का उच्चारण करे, अर्थात् उच्चारण करे; इस प्रकार स्वयं वैसा उच्चारण करते हुए वे अन्यों को शिक्षा देते हैं।
"It extends (tanoti) excellence of meaning" — thus "tataḥ" means the speaker, by the rule "tani-mṛṅbhyāṁ kicca," the affix "tan" being in the agent sense.
'अर्थ की चातुरी का विस्तार करता है' — इस प्रकार 'ततः' अर्थात् वक्ता; 'तनि-मृङ्भ्यां किच्च' इस सूत्र से कर्ता में 'तन्' प्रत्यय होता है।
