"His own glory" (svānubhāva) means Brahman.
Showing Śuka's compassion, he speaks, beginning "who" (ya).
"The blinding darkness" (andhaṁ tamaḥ) is the dense darkness called saṁsāra, and the verse speaks of those wishing to cross over it. "The secret of the Purāṇas" (guhya) means, among the Purāṇas, the secret, the thing to be concealed; and here four qualifying epithets are given as the reason for its being secret. "Self-evident" (svānubhāvam) means that whose own (sva), proper, peculiar power (anubhāva), its majesty, it is. It is the essence of all the śāstras and śrutis. "One" (ekam) means without a second; the meaning is: incomparable. "The inner self" (adhyātma) is the truth of the self that abides with reference to the self, the aggregate of effect and cause; its "lamp" (dīpa) is what directly illumines it. "I approach" (upayāmi) means I go for refuge.
Therefore, he who was thus, directly even toward his own father Śrī Kṛṣṇa-dvaipāyana, without any taking of notice, that very Śuka, by his absorption in this book named Śrīmad-Bhāgavata, made up of the description of Śrī Bhagavān's pastimes, became thus too — so he says, beginning "who" (ya). This statement of Śrī Sūta, which expresses the favor of Śrī Guru for the commencement of the scripture, is being explained by uniting it, in that very form, with the statement beginning "his mind absorbed in his own bliss" (sva-sukha-nibhṛta-) [Bhā.Pu. 12.12.69], which serves for its conclusion.
Who, indeed — as the cited verse declares: "Leaving aside his own disciples, Paila and the rest, Bhagavān Bādarāyaṇa sang this supreme secret to me, his son, who was at peace." In accordance with this, he "spoke" — that is, by his speech made manifest — this secret of the Purāṇas named Śrīmad-Bhāgavata, showing its extraordinary power in accordance with the linkage of the verses preceding and following "there was present Bhagavān, the son of Vyāsa" [Bhā.Pu. 1.19.25].
"The guru of the sages, I approach" (munīnāṁ gurum upayāmi) — I take refuge in him.
Of what sort is that secret of the Purāṇas? To that he says: its extraordinary power, in accordance with the passage beginning "or what is the Lord to others?" (kiṁ vā parair īśvaraḥ) [Bhā.Pu. 1.1.2]. Again, of what sort is it? To that he says: the essence of all the śrutis, in accordance with the passage beginning "fallen from the wish-fulfilling tree of the Veda" (nigama-kalpa-taroḥ) [Bhā.Pu. 1.1.3]. Again, of what sort is it? To that he says: foremost among the Purāṇas, in accordance with the passage beginning "as the Gaṅgā among rivers" (nimnagānāṁ yathā gaṅgā) [Bhā.Pu. 12.13.16]. Again, of what sort is it? To that he says: in accordance with the passage beginning "his mind absorbed in his own bliss" (sva-sukha-nibhṛta-cetāḥ) [Bhā.Pu. 12.12.69], it abides with reference to the self, the own mind — the supreme mystery, the truth called the lovely pastimes of the unconquered one (ajita).
Its "lamp" (dīpa) is its illuminator — "the lamp of the inner self" (adhyātma-dīpa).
But if so, then how did he make it manifest? To that he says: "the blinding" (andha) — the obstructing — darkness (tamaḥ), the all-veiling ignorance; out of compassion for those bound in saṁsāra who wish to cross over it, that is, the compassion that is in them — under the sway of that compassion: such is the meaning.
Although they do not know the mystery whose nature is the relish of the lovely pastimes of the unconquered one (ajita), nonetheless he made manifest that which illumines up to that very point — behold the greatness of compassion! — such is the inner sense. And this compassion of his arose from his obtaining that Lord's nature through the experience of His pastimes.
For otherwise, in the case of one solely self-content (ātmārāma), the cited verse would apply: "Even of those who worship Him not a single one truly worships, so how then of those who do not worship? — for the self-content (ātmārāma), who have attained their desire, are ungrateful and hostile to the guru." And so, because of the contradiction with this statement of Śrī Bhagavān, that mere self-contentment could not be the case at all.
In this matter, his compassion alone is indeed the reason; so he says, "who" (ya).
Out of compassion for those bound in saṁsāra he spoke. Not only was this Parīkṣit alone to be delivered, but also those bound in saṁsāra who would be born hereafter — let them too cross over by this very Bhāgavata. At that very time he remembered all who would come later — such is the inner sense.
"The blinding" (andha) — the dense — darkness (tamaḥ), ignorance; of those wishing to cross over it with the greatest ease. The principles, the mahat and the rest, that are established in the self — their "lamp" (dīpa), their illuminator: thus the fruit intended for seekers of liberation (mumukṣu), namely the destruction of ignorance, is stated.
But for the pure devotees, it is the essence (sāra) of all the śrutis, the Upaniṣads; and by a double meaning (śleṣa), the essence of the "śrutis" taken as the hearings, the things to be relished by the organ of hearing. Hence is indicated its being the fruit of the wish-fulfilling tree of the Veda (nigama-kalpa-taru), as stated earlier.
Therefore: "sva," from his very self, is "anubhāva," that which makes known the power that is the excellence of rasa — and that is his; this is in accordance with "his mind absorbed in his own bliss" (sva-sukha-nibhṛta-cetāḥ) [Bhā.Pu. 12.12.69], where "the lovely pastimes of the unconquered one (ajita) are the essence of Kṛṣṇa," and with "whose mind was seized by the Lord's qualities, who studied this commentary" [Bhā.Pu. 1.7.11] and the like.
Or (yad vā): that from which comes his own "anubhāva," his power. From the very exposition of it, Śuka's superiority over all the sages came about — such is the inner sense.
"One" (ekam): incomparable, without a second — such is the meaning.
Even for the sages seated in Parīkṣit's assembly — Nārada, Vyāsa, and the rest — this became as if never heard before; so Śrī Śukadeva instructed even them with what was to be taught — such is the purport (sandarbha).
Declaring his own guru's compassion, he bows down: "who" (ya).
"Him, the son of Vyāsa, I approach" (taṁ vyāsa-sūnum upayāmi) — I take him as my refuge. Of what sort? "The guru of the sages" (munīnāṁ gurum): for those seated in the assembly — Śrī Nārada, Parāśara, Vyāsa, and the rest — by the sweetness of his voice and by his exposition free of all dependence, the Purāṇa became as if unprecedented; thus he is their instructor too — such is the meaning. Who, out of compassion, spoke this secret of the Purāṇas — making Parīkṣit the occasion, he had the longing to deliver the living beings yet to be born: this is his compassion.
Of what sort is the Purāṇa? It is that whose "sva," its peculiar power (anubhāva) — characterized by the bringing of the Lord under sway, at once, in the heart of those eager to hear it — it is.
Or (yad vā): that from which comes Śuka's "anubhāva," his power — by his being its expositor, his surpassing greatness over all came about; "one" (ekam), foremost of all the śāstras, because of "akhila" (all).
"The inner self" (adhyātma): the distinctive attributes, the dharmas, in the self — in Hari and in the jīva; their "lamp" (dīpa), their full illumination. Of what sort are those bound in saṁsāra? To that he says: "the blinding" (andha) — the dense — darkness (tamaḥ), ignorance; of those wishing to cross over it without effort.
