"Uninitiated" means that he had no false identification with the body and the rest. Free of distress, he displayed himself as though distressed.
And it is said in the Skānda: He who is eternally satisfied, supreme bliss, imperishable, the Supreme Lord, for whom there is no such thing as the fruit called a son — by whom this world was born like this. He from whose sidelong glance, on whom Śrī depends, comes the abiding of Brahmā, Rudra, and the rest — that Vyāsa, the controller even of Rudra, performed austerity for the sake of a son. Hari displayed worldly distress at the separation; how could there be distress for Him, the great ocean of eternal bliss? Though Hari is the lord of all people and of the whole world, Viṣṇu performs deeds like a feeble laborer. Rudra is of the nature of ego; Śuka is the son of Dvaipāyana.
The commencement of the discourse is the obeisance to the guru and the deity. He states this in three verses, beginning "whom." There, making manifest the greatness of his own guru Śuka through Śuka's own conduct, he speaks, beginning "whom."
"Whom, going forth" means having renounced and departing. "Uninitiated" means approached for the purpose of non-initiation, with the request "initiate me."
Or, "uninitiated" means unaccompanied by anyone; that is, alone.
The reason for that is given in "free of prescribed duties": devoid of duties, not engaged on the path of works, because of his lifelong celibacy (naiṣṭhika). Dvaipāyana, that is Vyāsa, distressed and afraid at the separation, called out — he summoned with the prolated vocative "O so-o-on!"
In a call from afar, even when the prolation is present, the sandhi is ārṣa (a usage of the seers).
Then, being absorbed in him — in the form of Śuka — the trees echoed in response; they spoke the reply. The meaning is that, in order to dispel the father's bond of affection, it is he who gave the answer in the form of the trees.
To him, the sage, I bow down. The qualification serves to establish his being "absorbed in him": he into whom the heart, the mind, of all beings goes — that is, enters by the power of yoga — is "the heart of all beings"; to him.
Now at the commencement, offering obeisance to his own guru, he recalls his guru's excellent qualities in two verses.
There, in "whom," by the word "absorbed in him" (tan-mayatayā), through the word "him" (tat), the supreme self that had attained identity with him is meant. For at that time, through absorption in meditation, he had attained identity with the all-pervading inner controller — as will be stated in "seeing him following" [Bhā.Pu. 1.4.5] and so forth. For that very reason, when he was without the intention of giving a reply, the answer was given through the trees by that very inner controller, out of partiality toward him.
Or: not only, because of his being fixed in the Brahman that is the self of all, did the father become affectionate toward him even though he was indifferent; but the trees too became affectionate — thus he says "absorbed in him": like that, being full of affection, the trees too echoed, that is, turned toward him; how much more, then, other living beings — such is the meaning. And this is to be understood from his power alone; therefore he is the one in whom is the heart of all beings — to him.
"Unfallen" (anapetam) is a variant reading found in Citsukha.
Here this is the reflection of the son, Śuka. The answer to this question is: I shall declare some thing that is the essence of all the scriptures. For it has been said, "if by it the self of these is not satisfied, then what will come about, by which the self is well satisfied?" And so, even among the essences, that whose power to satisfy the self has been determined by the wise is to be sought out.
Therein too, though in the view of some it is Sāṅkhya alone, of some the Mīmāṁsā and the rest, of some the Upaniṣads alone, and of some the Vedānta-sūtras that determine the purport of their meaning that have the power to satisfy the self — even so, that is not to be accepted. For even of the chief of them, Śrī Kṛṣṇa-dvaipāyana, who knew all those various views and who composed the Vedānta-sūtra, a non-satisfaction of mind is observed.
And so, that by whose manifestation even his self became satisfied — in the great assembly of Parīkṣit, in the very presence of those great luminaries, the proponents of the essence of all, who sat there — that which, having passed the test, shone steadfast like pure refined gold, indisputable in its power to satisfy the self: that very Śrī-Bhāgavata it became fitting for me to declare. Therefore, thinking "I take refuge in its speaker, Śrī Śukadeva," he bows to him.
"Whom." "Going forth": having renounced and departing. "Uninitiated": not approached, though near at hand. "Free of prescribed duties": devoid of the rite of initiation and the rest. "O son!" — with the prolated vowel, Dvaipāyana called out.
Not only did the father become affectionate toward him, supremely indifferent though he was; but rather — by the statement from the Pādma, "By whom Hari is worshipped, by him the worlds too are satisfied; therein the creatures take delight, the moving and the unmoving alike," he says "the trees too." "Absorbed in him" — being full of Śuka — the trees too, with their facing toward him as the cause, called out like Vyāsa, "O son!" under the guise of an echo. For he who clings to something is said to be "absorbed in it" (tanmaya), as "absorbed in a woman" means a lustful man. And so, he in whom is the heart, the mind, of all beings — to him. By this, the affection toward him is, as toward the all-enchanting form of Bhagavān, not a mundane delusion. The fault, "this is Vyāsa's lack of discrimination too," is thereby refuted.
Or: then, being absorbed in him — in the form of Śuka — the trees echoed; under the guise of an echo, "O son!" they gave as a reply. "If I am your son, then you too are my son" — so the relation of who is father, who is son of whom, is indeed caused by delusion alone. "Without knowing this truth, why are you deluded?" — thus they made manifest.
The qualification serves to establish his being "absorbed in him": he into whom the heart, the mind, of all beings goes — enters by the power of yoga — is "the heart of all beings"; to him; let that very one, entering within me too, speak the Śrī-Bhāgavata through my mouth alone. For he who, entering even insentient trees, satisfied the father by a reply — let that very one, entering sentient me, satisfy the selves of these hearers by the Śrī-Bhāgavata itself. And thus the injunction is also indicated, that any other speaker of the Śrī-Bhāgavata, at the time of discourse, should meditate thus.
These, Śaunaka and the rest, had earlier been desirous of knowing the self. For these whose hearts were purified by desireless dharma, that wealth of knowledge became the means of knowing the Supreme Lord; so, thinking "I shall declare to these the Śrī-Bhāgavata itself, which sets forth the true nature of the Supreme Lord's form, qualities, powers, and pastimes," teaching the obeisance that is the commencement of the discourse, he bows to its speaker, his own guru Śrī Śuka, and to the deities.
There he states the obeisance to the guru in two verses: "I bow to that sage, Śrī Śuka." Expecting "of what sort?", he qualifies him: "going forth" — having renounced and departing; "uninitiated" — not having reached the proximity; "free of prescribed duties" — having given up the duties enjoined; "O son!" — with the prolated vowel Dvaipāyana called out.
Of what sort was Vyāsa? "Distressed at the separation" — fit for the study of the Śrī-Bhāgavata, agitated by separation from him, thinking "where could he be going?" This of his is verily an absorption of prema arising from his relation with Bhagavān, not a mundane delusion.
Not only did the father become affectionate toward him; but the trees too, having as their cause their being absorbed in him, their hearts pervaded by Śuka, echoed in response, facing him, "O son!" under the guise of an echo. For all become affectionate toward a devotee of Hari — "by whom Hari is worshipped, by him the worlds too are satisfied; therein the creatures take delight, the unmoving and the moving alike" — thus from the Pādma. This he states: "he in whom is the heart of all beings — to him."
Because, for the perfection of absorption in his own self, by his practice of devotion to Him, by the father's grace, that purified devotion was transmitted to him there.
Or: by the arising of the quality of having infallible resolve in his own self, realized in samādhi, there is the giving of a reply by the trees under the guise of an echo, "O son!" — thus the surpassing greatness of that Śuka is shown.
