Thus, in the first chapter six questions were put by the sages; in the second, Sūta gives the answer to four of them among those.
Gladdened by such well-formed questions of the brāhmaṇas, Ugraśravas, the son of Romaharṣaṇa, having honored and shown reverence to their words, began to speak — that is, set out to speak.
In the commentary the phrase is "six questions."
Therein, by the passages beginning "readily there" [Bhā.Pu. 1.1.9], by those beginning "O Sūta, you know" [Bhā.Pu. 1.1.12], and down to those ending "or who" [Bhā.Pu. 1.1.16], are the two questions concerning the purpose of Kṛṣṇa's descent and concerning Kṛṣṇa's deeds; the pair beginning "we, however" [Bhā.Pu. 1.1.19] is merely a restatement of this very question "O Sūta, you know" [Bhā.Pu. 1.1.12]. There the answer to both is one and the same, "May he protect by means of sattva" [Bhā.Pu. 1.2.34] — for the protection of the world is indeed His activity as well. In just this way the six questions declared in the commentary in the first chapter are made good. There, in the second chapter, are four answers, because the answer to the fourth of those questions is not seen there or elsewhere. By the passage beginning "His deeds" [Bhā.Pu. 1.1.17] there is the question about the pastimes of the creation of the universe and so forth, and its answer is given. By the passage beginning "He alone created this in the beginning" [Bhā.Pu. 1.2.30], and by that beginning "now narrate" [Bhā.Pu. 1.1.18], there is the question about the account of the descents, and its answer is the third chapter. The answer to the question about the refuge of dharma, raised by the passage beginning "tell us, O master of yoga" [Bhā.Pu. 1.1.23], is the very verse of the third chapter beginning "when Kṛṣṇa had departed to His own abode" [Bhā.Pu. 1.3.43].
In the second chapter the topic to be conveyed is Śrī bhakti, the goal is prema, and the object is Bhagavān — thus there is the setting forth of the three meanings here.
Ugraśravas, the son of Romaharṣaṇa.
In the second chapter, devotion to Bhagavān; its goal is prema; and the object is said to be Bhagavān, the son of Devakī.
Thus, gladdened by the previously shown questions, the son of Romaharṣaṇa, Romaharṣaṇi Ugraśravas, having honored — that is, having praised — began, that is, set out, to speak.
