With intense eagerness, longing once again to hear only His deeds, the sages declare their own lack of satisfaction with them in the verse beginning vayaṁ tu, "we, however."
We are satisfied with yoga, sacrifice, and the like. But He from whom darkness rises away is uttama; with the exploits of Him whose fame is such we are especially not satisfied, nor do we think, "enough." The reason is given by yad vikramam: it holds for those who hear those exploits.
Or else: let others be satisfied if they wish; we, however, are not. On this reading the word tu connects as "we, however, are not."
The meaning is this: the sense of "enough" arises in three ways — by filling the belly and so on, by ignorance of rasa, or by absence of a distinctive taste. By śṛṇvatām, "for those hearing," it is shown that because the ear is space-like there is no filling. By the mention of those who know rasa, satisfaction like that of animals, arising from ignorance, is ruled out. And He rejects the satisfaction that comes from the absence of any further taste, as in chewing sugarcane: that is, at every step, at every moment, it is sweeter than sweet.
The Kaivalya-dīpikā, commenting on the verse beginning vayaṁ tu, explains: yat means those exploits; svādu svādu, "from taste to greater taste" — here the case ending is elided by the rule ubhaya-supāṁ suluk pūrva-savarṇa; and pade pade means moment after moment. [Mukunda-phala 8.7]
On the phrase in the commentary, "as in chewing sugarcane": the meaning is that, whereas in chewing sugarcane there comes to be an absence of distinctive taste, here it is not so. With Bhagavān's exploits as such we are simply never satisfied. And even there, with the exploits of the supreme Uttamaśloka — whose nature is described in statements such as "He made the tīrtha lesser, O king" — we are especially not satisfied.
[Śrī Kṛṣṇa-sandarbha 71]
He is the one whose śloka — that is, His fame — is uttama, supreme.
Or else: He is the one who is praised and celebrated by the best (uttamaiḥ ślokyate).
With His exploits especially we are not satisfied; we do not think, "enough." The sense being that we are satisfied with sacrifice, yoga, and the like. This holds for those who hear His heroic deeds.
Or else: let others be satisfied if they wish; we, however, are not — this being the connection of the word tu.
The meaning is this: the sense of "enough" arises in three ways — by filling the belly and so on, by ignorance of rasa, or by absence of a distinctive sweetness. By śṛṇvatām, "for those hearing," it is shown that, because the ear is spacious and the exploit is nonmaterial, there is no filling. By the mention of those who know rasa, satisfaction like an animal's, due to ignorance of rasa, is rejected. And by pade pade — at every verbal ending, indeed at every moment — together with svāduto'pi svādu, "sweeter than sweet," it is shown that, unlike a chewed sugarcane stalk, it is not to be rejected as juiceless but is on the contrary supremely acceptable because of its intense sweetness.
They reveal their eagerness in the verse beginning vayaṁ tu, "we, however."
With the exploits of that Kṛṣṇa — who is praised and celebrated by Nārada and others whose darkness has risen away — we, however, are not satisfied; let others be satisfied if they wish, but we do not accept a sense of "enough" in hearing them. The reason is given by the word yat, "which."
For that sense of "enough" arises in three ways: by filling the belly and so forth, by ignorance of rasa, or by absence of a distinctive taste. By yac-chṛṇvatām, "for those hearing," it is said that, because the exploits are nonmaterial, the cavity of the ear is not filled by them. By the mention of those who know rasa, it is said that satisfaction does not arise like an animal's from ignorance of rasa. And by pade pade … svādu svādu it is said that there is no cessation through absence of a distinctive taste, as there is with a chewed sugarcane stalk.
